Is this really the year we beat the Tigers in Round One?

On watching the Tigers yesterday Balta looked dangerous, I'll change that to nearly impossible to stop. The only player that can go with him with the pace is Gov, but I doubt he's got the strength. Riewoldt looked good too.

Baker has taken Houlis role, carved the Hawks to pieces, we need to make him accountable or do we tag him. Playing Williams forward on him could win
us this game.

Cotchin and Martin were moving as well as I've ever seen them, which is great, because I want them to be on top of the ground when we beat them.

**** yeah pumped for this.

Hawthorn are ****ing terrible let’s not pump up Richmond’s tyres too much they look about the same area as us they aren’t invincible. Yeh but agree with u, this is the year we beat em

Where I'm hoping we'll go:

FB: Docherty Young McGovern
HB: Williams Weitering Saad
C: Setterfield Cerra O'Brien
HF: Martin C.Curnow Fisher
FF: JSOS McKay Durdin

R: TDK Cripps Hewett

Int:
Kemp, E.Curnow, Kennedy, Williamson

EMG: Pittonet, Plowman, Dow, Fogarty

Just curious..going into their games y’day, how did Tigs and Hawks go in their previous game and who did they play?

Being a racing man I believe in form lines - we beat Aints who last night beat the amazing *, Dees belted Roos and we beat Dees. Our form line is darn strong.

We can win absolutely v Tigs.
In the practice matches last week Hawks drew overall to Collingwood in a 6qtr game. However in that game Pies withdrew most of their AFL players at the end of the 4th quarter, whilst Hawks kept most in. At the end of the 4th Pies were up 121-73.

Richmond beat Geelong by 18 points at GMHBA at the end of 4 quarters (before VFL players came on for the last 2 and Cats ended up winning by 5pts)

Prediction, us by 3 goals. Both sides have a potent forward line and a midfield that can do damage in a matter of moments. I think it's going to come down to defence and midfield dominance.

Could it be that we bat quite deep in the midfield now? We have looked that way so far. The Tigers should be a good side. They belted Hawthorn but Hawthorn aren't looking like being very good. We were on our way to belting the reining premiers before we took our forward line out which is more impressive IMO. In saying that those were only preseason games.

In the past we have often been up for the fight in these games and have even threatened to beat Richmond before they run over us late. A few of our forwards have stood up in the past and kicked bags in this one. Jack Martin and Charlie Curnow have had their moment against the Tigers in round 1 so could it happen again?

We have a few out and some big names are out or in doubt. They don't appear to be missing too many do they? Lambert?

I feel at the moment this is our best 22

B: Williams Weitering McDonald
HB: Docherty McGovern Saad
C: O'Brien Cripps Walsh
HF: Honey Curnow Martin
F: Durdin McKay Owies
OB: Pittonet Cerra Hewett
IC: Newman Kennedy Fisher Silvagni
EM: Kemp Stocker Marchbank DeKoning
Res: Plowman Cuningham Dow Motlop Fogarty Carroll Parks Williamson Newnes Young Philp Curnow Boyd Setterfield Cottrell

So we probably have Docherty in some doubt but not heaps, Walsh out who is a huge out and Honey who isn't a massive out but would be there if he was fit.

Predicted line-up

B: Newman Weitering McDonald
HB: Williams McGovern Saad
C: O'Brien Cripps Setterfield
HF: Motlop Curnow Martin
F: Durdin McKay Owies
OB: Pittonet Cerra Hewett
IC: Docherty Kennedy Fisher Silvagni
EM: Kemp Plowman DeKoning Williamson
Res: Dow Fogarty Carroll Parks Newnes Young Philp Curnow Boyd Cottrell

Docherty to get up after 38 possessions in the VFL match. Hard to put a time frame on his return but it's clear he wants it and he's either ready or extremely close to ready.

Motlop to debut. He's a strong bodied ready to go youngster who fits into that vacant half forward position IMO really well. Some Impressive form in the VFL scratch matches may just see a round 1 debut. TBH I don't see anyone else on that list who would suite that position. Kemp maybe? He was good up forward against the Saints.

The other position is wing. Going by what we saw from the practice matches, no one really took the wing position in a big way other than Setterfield and O'Brien. Ed Curnow could be an option there but I get the feeling he will be overlooked as will Newnes. It is going to make a MASSIVE difference when we can pencil Walsh into that position who IMO will be an AA wingman if he plays the season there, he will be elite in that role which improves us both defensively and offensively. We have spoken on here about our weakness on the wings however I feel we may have the leagues best wingman under our nose who we can now afford to play there. At this stage I am backing in Setterfield and O'Brien to do the job and do it well enough.

Matchups are going to be difficult. Weitering and McDonald are good matches for the taller Lynch but if Riewoldt has his speed and endurance back he could be a real handful for Weitering or McDonald. I can see us needing to move McGovern onto Riewoldt if he becomes a problem as he has the pace although McGovern may be looking to take Martin when he goes forward or the resting ruck. He or Williams will mind Martin who has troubled us in the past IMO. IMO Weitering will start on Riewoldt and McDonald on Lynch and we will see how that goes. Their small forwards are always going to be in the game and will be a challenge for our small defenders. Fortunately our group look fit and in good shape so it will be a good contest there.

Looking forward to the midfield battle. If we bring that intensity, physicality and skill we will be hard to beat. Cerra, Hewett and Cripps look to be gelling really well and will be a worry for opposition teams if they are allowed to dominate the clearances. Kennedy and Fisher slipping under the radar is something we could keep seeing as well. Our wingers can either be a strength or weakness. O'Brien if he can keep getting 20 possessions a game is going to do a lot of damage and if he does the defensive stuff well then he's going to be firmly best 22. Setterfield I feel will be a defensive wingman and really only has to do his job. We need to put some attention into Cotchin and Martin physically. They are their main weapons in there and are becoming older bodies. We are a big strong on-ball unit and we need to focus on hitting, blocking and hard tackling with these two. Don't let them play the game on their term however lets not let that take the focus away on how we want to play. It's more about taking those opportunities when they come and not going out of our way or setting up to do these things.

The forward line battle is going to be interesting. In the past we have opened them up and exposed their defence for being reliant on midfield pressure and being a bit too lose and attacking. Curnow, McKay, Durdin and the rest could cause some serious damage with good supply. They are similar to us. Two good tall forwards surrounded by some pretty good pressure orientated smalls.

I feel this is a game we should win and if we had Walsh I would pencil this one in but no one really knows where both Richmond and Carlton are at. Plenty predicting good things for both sides but nothing has been proven yet.

I would not miss this game for the world, tipping it to be the most enjoyable Carlton game Blues fans have seen in about 9 years.

You don’t like Omac. Not even good enough for emergency.
