Everyone thought Tigers would be on the way down this year but you can never write off a successful team with a winning culture.

Balta, Lynch and Riewoldt is a daunting forward line. Add to that a fit and firing Dusty, Cotxhin and Prestia, together with Bolton, and the midfield is still looking good.

Whichever way you slice it, Walsh is a huge out and even with the great additions of Cerra and Hewitt, his quality will be missed. The tigers forward line will stretch Carlton imo so the midfield battle will be critical.

The usual level of optimism will be there leading into round 1 and hoping Carlton can finally break the opening round run of losses.
Yep definitely out. By all accounts he’s progressing well in his recovery, and whikst we’ve had a knack of playing underdone players, Walsh will definitely sit the first month out.

These Round 1 games can go either way. We are a better chance than the bookies say. Richmond are on the decline from their lofty days and their best players are now on the wrong side of peak age. They might be around the middle of the pack with us for a finals spot but they could just as easily back down the bottom part, too.

I’ll back us in for an upset win in round 1.

The selection of the back 7 will be very interesting.
Based on the pre season games, we are looking at Weiters, Oscar, Gov, Saad, Williams, Newman and Boyd.
Plowman looks on the outer given no senior exposure over the pre season, except one quarter as a makeshift forward.
Willo dropped out after the Saints game and only played as a fill in forward for a half last week.
Stocker won’t be ready.
Young looks unlikely with Weiters returning.
Doc is the interesting one. Is he ready to go? If so, he comes in for Boyd I would expect but also wouldn’t be surprised to see him being held back to ensure he’s good for what always is a long season.

I am hesitant to write the Tiges off just yet, this will be a good test straight up for us.
Hope we can knock them off

From the pre-season selections I see us lining up like this:
Newman McDonald McGovern
Williams Weitering Saad
O'Brien Cripps Setterfield
Fisher C. Curnow Martin
Durdin McKay Owies
Pittonet Hewett Cerra

Silvagni Kemp Boyd
Kennedy

Not sold on OMac and Setterfield but with Walsh, Docherty and Stocker to come back in from injury/conditioning and some players waiting for their chance I like the look of the list this year.

EDIT - I forgot Kennedy :straining:

For what it's worth.....

NEWMAN MC DONALD MC GOV

SAAD WEITERS WILLIAMS

MARTIN CERRA O BRIEN

FISH CHARLIE SOS

DURDIN HARRY KENNEDY

TDK CRIPPS HEWITT

BENCH

OWIES DOCHERS PLOW PITTO

emerg SETTERS MOTLOP DOW KEMP

love to see Martin on one wing , Dochs after 38 touches in in twos gotta start.

Young also pushing hard.
Setters need to find some urgency.
Not sure whats happening with Dow.... midfield squeeze has pushed him out. Has to dominate VFL.
Williamson ...I am not a fan sorry. shows flashes but too many bad errors and has always done it.

Love this 22. Great job.

Plow or Ed for that last spot. Ed for the midfield experience or Plow if we need to try and contain Dusty when moved forward.

Haven't seen any suggestion that Martin has been training as a wingman?
And given the conditioning block he has recently completed, I really doubt he will be shifted to the wing for Round 1.
Agreed, it's been pretty much exclusively O'Brien as the offensive wing and Setterfield as the defensive wing.

There's an argument that Doc could come in and take Setterfield's defensive wing role, but that will be dependent on how he's pulled up (38 touches vs 'he was blowing up a bit between plays') and if Voss see's him taking the wing role or staying in the backline.

From Vossy's comments re Doc, more likely the backline (which would be my choice too).

The Tigers are clearly changing their game style, been on record as wanting to go in with 3 talls up forward and 2 ruckman.
This should hamper their helter Skelter pressure style of game somewhat, it will be all about the midfield and if ours plays like they did against Melbourne especially at the centre bounce then I can’t see us losing

He wasn’t wearing a moon boot last Thursday night, he’s telling all and sundry close to him he’ll be back quicker than anticipated.
Don’t think he’ll play round 1 but I’d like a bob or two on round 2 and absolutely sure he’ll be back by round 3

I'll be very interested to see if we go with Pittonet/TDK Ruck combo or Pittonet with Silvagni as back up. If we go with the former then Silvagni may miss out altogether. Hard to fit TDK Pittonet Charlie & Silvangi in one side

I don't think Docherty will play yet as they will be patient. Poor kid has gone through hell. Motlop must also be close to a spot as well and I'm keen to see Carroll soon. Nice to have options

Jack won't be missing out

Where the hell is Kennedy in all of these suggested line ups???? I mean, he did just show his best game...
He's an absolute lock for round 1.

Think he will be a lock all year unless he gets injured.

Voss will love the way he goes about his footy

Locks:
B: Gov, MacDonald, ...
HB: Saad, Weiters, Williams
C: ... , Cripps, LOB
HF: Jack, Charlie, Fish
F: Durdin, Harry, Owies
Foll: Pitto, Cerra, Hewett
I/C: Kennedy

Likely: Martin, Kemp, Setterfield, Newman

Possible: Doc, TDK, Boyd, Plow, Williamson, Ed

I'm hopeful that Doc and Plow take the 6th and 7th defender spots.

A mate of mine was at the game on Thursday and said Walsh was there in his runners and walking around like normal. No limping or strapping or anything else
saw him playing a little one on one with charlie at the elwood courts.....

Pretty sure most have him in the same role as the Melbourne game as the inside mid rotation, splitting his time there and forward.

Can't see the mid setup changing from the last two games. Imagine it's Pitto, Cripps, Cerra & Hewett in the square at the first bounce with O'Brien & Setterfield as the wings. Kennedy either starting at half forward or on the bench, doesn't really matter too much, either way he'll likely be the only other player getting significant centre-bounce on-ball time. Fisher probably gets a handful over the course of the game, maybe 10-20%, but Kennedy is probably up there above 50%.

Plowman wasn't even supposed to play, and was forced to play up forward - like Williamson - because Durdin (calf knock) and Jack (shoulder knock) went off for precautionary reasons.
