Gray collects McGovern high

PORT Adelaide superstar Robbie Gray has been offered a one-match ban for his high bump on West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern in Sunday’s JLT Series clash.

I’d consider challenging this (just read it wouldn’t add to the suspension if unsuccessful). I think you can legitimately argue against this being careless. I mean, what alternative action bar not going for the ball would result in less contact? He didn’t really bump, rather just braced himself.

How the ****ing hell can you be banned in a game in a different comp and the ban not apply in that comp!

I can understand the ban running into the season, but that is just ridiculous.

According to my reading of it, we pay $10,000 to take it to the Tribunal.

If we lose, the original suspension stands and we forfeit the cash (which also goes against our football department cap).

If we win, Robbie's free and I think we get the cash back, although that isn't expressly stated in what I can find.

I think it'd be worth it just to hear what fanciful alternative Christian or whoever thinks Gray had, beyond not approaching the contest at all or leaving himself wide open to potentially get barrelled.

I would actually like a MRP made up of legal minds who could actually legally interpret the rules and explain them. Rather than ex players who still catch up for drinks with Smithy, Douche Bag and Bear who are all still playing and enjoy the favours from friendships and club allegiances.

It’s ludicrous.

It’s almost as if the AFL is saying “The JLT doesn’t fall under our juristiction, so games missed must be served in OUR actual competition”, even though the JLT clearly is an official competition under the AFL’s juristicion. It’s so very AFL.

I understand the AFL wanting to protect the head etc but surely there has to be an element of common sense in that it’s a contact sport and unfortunately accidents may occur where someone may get contact.

It’s not like he lined him up and tried to knock him out.

This is where the rules and tribunal is ridiculous.

Just seen the vision for the first time. Serious question, do we never get the rub of the green from the MRP or is it just every fan's conviction that their team is unfairly treated? It wasn't even a bump, and Robbie doesn't raise his elbow or shoulder. McGovern is ducking into the contest, what can the attacking player do, squib it?

Will this just result in all players being coached to duck?

Hawthorn fans would have no right to complain about that, and to a lesser extent Richmond fans after the Trent Cotchin incident last year.

Essentially, if you're in scenarios like this you're doomed.

By using your arm/shoulder to protect yourself, even in a passive sense where you're seeking to avoid/minimise contact, you're "shaping to bump", regardless of whether the opponent's momentum primarily carries him into you. If you then make contact with his head, it's over. "The head is sacrosanct... the head is sacrosanct *wipes chin*".

Apart from scenarios where he doesn't protect himself and suffers the brunt of any impact, can you imagine the world where Robbie throws his hands in the air and successfully jumps/dodges/dives out of McGovern's path and McGovern ends up gathering and drives the Eagles forward?

He'd be a human meme for the rest of his life.
