Robert Harvey is one of the most overrated players in AFL history. While many will have you believe he is up there with Buckley, Voss, Hird and Carey as legends of the the last 15 years, what games has Robert Harvey ever won off his own boot? While he is a class act off the field, his on-field performances have always been mediocre at best. He is as slow as a Holden Barina in reverse, cant kick for goal and can barely even bend down to get the footy when its on the ground. If it wasnt for Shane Woewodin and Adam Goodes he would be one of the least deserving brownlow medallists ever. While the St Kilda like to think he's one of the greats of the game, the truth is he is just another average St Kilda club player like Stewart Loewe and Nathan Bourke and will be forgotten before the first bounce in 2009.

I approve of this thread. A very solid player, nothing more. Still got to respect him. 21 years is a long time.

Solidly average player. Had the odd good year, but nothing more. Saying Harvey is the best player to come out of the Saints just shows how poor of a club they really are. Personally I put the likes of Mackie, Lonergan and Stokes well above him.

Are you kidding me? i can name 2 games off the bat, St.Kilda - Adelaide Qualifying Final a few years back (won the game off his own boot by kicking a late goal to put us in front or sealed the game), then a few years ago against the kangas during the season (burst through the middle of the ground with around a minute to go, and we were down by a few points, picked out the g. train with a brilliant pass, SETUP THE WIN!) I doubt someone who has mediocre perfomances week in - week out can win 2 brownlow medals consectively! you should be torturted for this disgrace!

Back to back Brownlows and he is "average". I can't believe the stupidity of people, even for Bay 13......

Who are you? Have these guys won a brownlow? wait have they won 2 brownlows? They've been in the game for a short time, what a ridiculous comment, make that judgement after 21 years of footy, not now you fool. I'm going to go kill myself after reading some of this stuff.

Robert Harvey has played 379 games for 215 goals. That's 0.56 goals a game.

Lonergan has played 18 games for 32 goals (1.7 goals a game), Stokes has played 46 games for 70 goals (1.5 goals a game), Mackie averages about 0.8 goals a game.

What is the objective of AFL? Scoring goals. These players are currently far better, on average than Harvey. Harvey is a decent player, but on the whole a mediocre contributor.

omg that is 1 of the dumbest things i have now read on this site. who in there right mind would chose maick or lonergan or stokes over harvey at his best. man u must be so up ur self to think them players r better then harvey. harvey has won 2 more brownlows then all of them together. none of them 3 will ever win a brownlow. They might become good players but not as good as harvey.

hey you adelaide derilct! We are talking about his ability etc. Not his hairstyle

I gave my opinion on his ability in a GF. Why did you delete that from my OP?

Oh PS

Back to bed Dylan, clearly you have never seen Lonergan in action.

At his prime nobody worked harder on a football field than Harvey,he used to run all day and leave 2 sometimes 3 players trying to run with him for the match, wont be remembered as the game breaking Franklin/Carey type but people forget just how good he was, i will always remember him as the person nobody could tackle.:thumbsu:

Generally speaking, the objective of AFL is scoring goals, but when you narrow it down, the objective of a forward is to score goals, the midfielders role is to give good supply to the forwards. How can you compare Lonergan and Stokes, in particular, to Harvey? Last time I checked I thought they were forwards? Harvey is a midfielder, if you play forward your always going to average more goals than a midfielder. Geelong supporters are so simple.

i want hard facts on mackie, i doubt he's be at .8 pal. and the others are forwards in a diminant high scoring team. harvey has been a midefielder in a low scoring, and lets be honest, not a hugely successful team...useless inaccuate facts that lacks specificity and validity...

My mistake- he's got 52 goals for 78 games or 0.666, but is still well above Harvey in terms of goals and class.

No you didn't, you said it was a soft display, you never said anything about his ability, you just gave your opinion about his hardness. Anyway, your basing it on one performance, how about you look at his entire career. simple minded.;)
