I think AFL clubs are happy to take the credit and use these guys images to promote themselves as progressive but don't walk the walk. They make out that the club were somehow special for having Winmar in our jumper when he stood up. I doubt that he was ever encouraged and I bet he probably got told to pull his head in. We now sell ourselves on that image.

Forgive the intrusion but just wanted to say this is absolutely spot on and not just a St Kilda issue. The AFL is great at picking and choosing when they want to promote indigenous players and stories but it sounds like a lot of people in footy have been aware of Robbie's plight for a long time, and not just at your club. I am sure he will get the funding and support he needs but it shouldn't take a news article to prompt that.

I guess you just have to be happy that something has brought some attention to the issue. It's taken a perspective shift to change the club's way of handling him. I think there was a sense that he was a bit of an embarrassment to them, he was a messy story and a traumatised individual. It was easier for them to ignore him than try to work out how to do something for him. The article by allowing others to see him in a more compassionate way has allowed the club too.

I'm just glad he's been able to get something done for him before it was too late. Hopefully there aren't more like him out there.

Beautiful to see the way people have rallied around Robbie.

I always looked at the 'Mad Dog' nickname as a term of endearment given the Saints supporters loved him. I wasn't around to watch him live but knew plenty, he was an icon.

I loved watching Robbie play. For those that were never lucky enough to see him live, he was super- quick, a massive kick (65m plus), a brutal tackler, and he regularly took “hangers” (like the one in my avatar which I saw at Moorabbin against Carlton in 1975).
In 1974/75 he was the most exciting player in the league.

Unfortunately, his opponents would constantly racially abuse him to put him of his game - and it usually worked. I often describe him as ‘Nicky Winmar with an extra 10kg of muscle’.

It sounds like his life is finally on track. Hopefully he can find some sort of peace.
Spot on. He was a beautiful kick. Saw him play one day in Ballarat on a wet day on a mud heap. Kicked a goal that went about twice as far that anyone else on the ground was capable of kicking. Super skillful player.

May have been a 'term of endearment' but he found it hard to live with and as he says in the article it took him a long time to be able to say so.

Respect to the club for how they have responded today.

Club has responded, don't know if it was posted here.

Wasn't saying you didn't George, was only pulling it back to his perspective.

Also why I respect the clubs response -ie will reach out to Robert Muir and the time it may take for him. Huuuge contrast to Collingwoods response blaming him.

All good, I didn't mention it as felt it was a given. Doesn't matter how I or anyone else sees it, up to him at the end of the day.

Really looking forward to the club bringing him in - he was one of my old mans favourites and from what I've seen he was a great player.

It was an excellent article - my knowledge and understanding of the impact of racism and extent of it in society and footy is still in progress, and I'm from an ethnic background!

I am sure all clubs can learn from Robert's experience and make sure they are doing everything possible to ensure inclusiveness and our indigenous players from current and past players are supported. .

Also a first class response from your club today - I trust they will back it up with actions - you guys as members can hold them to account! It's times like this when being part of a club is more than just the football.

Good luck today.

I have actually emailed the club in the past and Matt Finnis has not only responded personally but also rang me. Hes a true peoples person. Absolute ripper of a bloke

Heartbreaking article to read.

Kudos to Mal & Catherine who set up the GoFundMe page and boy has it taken off.

It's really encouraging to see the incredible amount of donations that have been made, particularly in these times when many of us find ourselves with far less expendable income than we are used to.

Also great to see Finnis respond, and hopefully we can look after Robbie and make him feel welcome at the club he bleeds for.

Fortius Quo Fidelius.
