I don’t know why, but maybe this is because I never saw him play, therefore the only thing that connects him to me as a fan is the club , not his play , toughness etc etc. the bit that really got to me is that despite how much pain and suffering Robbie went through he still like so many of us bleeds for the club, it actually made me feel a pit in my stomach that he was still wearing the Saints flannel top. I don’t know why but it got to me. At the end of the day we all as saints supporters/players etc etc have a bond that binds is as a tribe and we all feel for Robbie and all want to support him evidenced by the go fund me. I do think that the Saints bond is unique , even to other clubs. I just hope we can give him all the support and rekindle the bond that he deserves.

St Kilda should organise something for our next indigenous round home game in Melbourne with Nicky and Robbie.

Imagine them walking out together, it would bring the house down.

Why can’t we invite all the indigenous players who have played for the club ?.

Russell Jeffrey, Phil Narkle, Xavier and Ralph, Gilbert and Greg McAdam, Allan Murray, Nicholas Winmar, Fred Campbell, Sean Charles, Gavin Mitchell and Terry Milera. There are probably quite a few I have missed.

Robert Muir leading them all out onto the field.

What an amazing thing that would be.

Robert needs to hear the message from the public that what happened to him was abhorrent, and that we know now that he is not the person portrayed by the media or the tribunals. He was targetted by the worst of humanity, and it would make any mouse roar. If anything, he was ahead of his time for standing up to it and not taking that sh#t. He's paid a heavy price, the pioneers usually do.

I agree with that

have donated to the fund

As a saints fan born late 60's my memories of him are as a fantastic player - it was always disappointing to see him sidelined for suspension - and at that young age I clearly had no idea about the real nature of the attacks he endured but as a saints fan I could see he didn't want to be losing control - the opposition just new they could push him to breaking point - it was clearly an accepted tactic in the day - I am glad it is not any longer

Impressed by the response of the club and of those who have contributed to the GoFund me page. Some of the comments on the thread on the main board are to be expected but still very disappointing similar to the reporting of Channel 7.

The article should be used as part of induction for all players, it gives perspective.

Amazing article but shame it had to take someone to write it to get this response

Great response by the club as well but they need to make good on their word

It would also be great for the club organise a match day where the supporters (once footy returns to normal) can acknowledge Robbie and show him our appreciation

Maybe next year's Indigenous Round (if it is a home game) with a HT round the boundary car ride with our other indigenous past players

Channel 7 running with "allegations towards St Kilda" and footage of Robert whacking people.

No mention of Geelong, Collingwood, Carlton, The Footy Show, West Torrens, nor any footage of him actually playing the game.

The media were the ones that created the image of an angry lunatic. They aren't going to take responsibility it looks like. The club didn't look after Robbie in a way that they should have considering the horrendous treatment the media, fans and other clubs treated him, but they need a mirror. Eddie might want to get a letter written up. If one club looks bad out of this it's his club and his show not far behind.

It would be a shame with out a full house at Marvel to give them the honour they deserve.

Yet the media is painting it as St Kilda being exposed. Just awful treatment, I’m glad the article went into such depth.
Longform journalism is a seemingly lost art, which is unfortunate.

I love the idea of bringing back all the indigenous players that have played for the Saints to have a part during the next indigenous round. Have them form a line for the team to run through, or something like that.

Strange as it seems, I'm beginning to hope they don't lift the target again once they get to $100k.

If it was me I'd be starting to think - yeah look this is fantastic and overwhelming but where the f*** was all this concern 20 years ago!!!

I think part of it is probably that his life has been so absolutely traumatic that the football despite being painful beyond belief still gave him pride and an identity. Saints fans still love him and it sounds like he didn't get a lot of that as well. I'm just greatful to the journalist that he's going to get some peace in the way his image will be reinterpreted and his legacy to football is viewed. The money won't make up for the pain but hopefully it takes away some uncertainty and stress in his life. It would be amazing if he spends the time he's got left mentally at peace and in some level of comfort where he doesn't have to live pension to pension stretching every cent. It sounds like he never felt like anyone had his back, hopefully now he knows thousands do.

It was a different world back then though. Indigenous players were tolerated not respected. Even guys like Lindsay Thomas used to get racially abused over the fence and that was pretty recently. I hope he gets as much as people can afford to give. He could have sued the club for not providing a safe environment and the pain and suffering that he endured.

Matt Finnis on SEN With Gerard Whateley now talking about Robbie Muir.
Worth a listen later if you can’t now.
Also, if you can, keep listening To Gerard comments immediately after about The abuse and racial vilification by Collingwood supporters and cheer squad that was documented in the media at the time, but denied by the club.

Great article, thanks for link to gofundme - not really in a position to spend money but this was just too important. When I gave, the total was a tick past $97k. Glad to see the club's response but will be watching to see the actions match the words. The club's actions a couple of years ago not a great look and hopefully this spotlight on it will force improvement.

More importantly I hope Robert sees that his club loves him as much as he loves us. We are St Kilda and Robert Muir has always been and will always be one of us. I hope he can enjoy the rest of his life and get the help, support and love he needs.

Go Saints!

It's on SEN's whooshkaa page now. When I get some time I'll post it.

68 games in 10 years. Boggles the mind.

That ridiculous suspension that cost him 2 years as well meant he could have got to the club earlier. A career of 12 years see most players with his talent level chalk up at least 150 games.

I think it's 150 games for Life Membership with St Kilda. Should the club consider giving Robbie a Life membership for that amount of time served?

I have mentioned on this board that we should be playing a bigger role in indigenous round.

There's a great opportunity to grab that Friday night game and do something special, but also different to the dream time game.

We have a huge history with indigenous players both on the right side and now on the wrong.

It would be great to see all our indigenous players from the past play a role or at least be there.
