ST KILDA v MELBOURNE
Melbourne
B:
Matthew Whelan, Matthew Warnock, Jared Rivers
HB: James Frawley, Stefan Martin, Aaron Davey
C: Jack Grimes, Cale Morton, Brock McLean
HF: Colin Sylvia, Brad Miller, Daniel Bell
F: Brad Green, Matthew Bate, Cameron Bruce
Foll: Mark Jamar, Brent Moloney, James McDonald
I/C: Paul Johnson, Addam Maric, Nathan Jones, Jamie Bennell
Emg: Kyle Cheney, Lynden Dunn, Ricky Petterd

In: Jamar, Bell
Out: Ricky Petterd, Russell Robertson

Petterd out is expected, when you play someone out of position for 9 weeks I'd expect them to be out of form. Jamar back is good as we have a solid ruckman and Johnson doesn't have to do it. Bell's inclusion is interesting, especially on the half forward flank. Will they play him as they have Petterd?

Russell Robertson dropped is a joke for mine. His efforts were no better or no worse than any of the other forwards. Who are we going to kick to now? Bate who's struggled all year or maybe Miller who doesn't play deep enough?

God I love Dean Bailey.

Robertson is a goose, and his career is over.

Besides the pathetic effort on the goal line,. he also blatantly ignored a wide open Colin Sylvia in the final quarter. Col was alone 20 metres out, but Robbo decide to have a shot from 50 - and miss.

Bailey is the coach I have dreamed of since Northey left.

Bell at HF has been talked about before. I suspect he'll be used in a defensive role against a Fisher, Gram or Goddard.

He ain't exactly Steve Johnson...

As for Robbo, i don't think he's finished. Hopefully he can get a bit more match fitness in the 2's. Even though he kicked goals in his return game he still looked rusty.

At the end of the day a Daniel Bell giving 100%, laying tackles and affecting spoils is gonna be better than a half fit Robbo who's putting in about 60% effort...

the only way we will kick a score is if we line up exactly like that in the forward line and maybe switch davey and bell...and that score still won't be good enough by 3 or 4 goals on a good day..who on our list has the proven ability to pop up and kick 3 or 4?

Going a long way to set an example Bails..I'll back your judgement. But only just.

Yep, we're going to get bent over.

We have nobody up forward.

Shit decision Bailey.

Ok, so lets leave a guy in the team who is lazy and breaks team rules just so we can get a couple of goals closer to the Saints.

yeah, right.

The Daniher era is long gone, thank christ.

What team rules? He made one mistake.

Lazy? Far from it, he's our best forward and he's kicked one goal less than Miller and Bate who've played the whole season.

It's a shit decision.

The Russell Robertson of 2009 is the Adem Yze of 2008. Some old guy has to take the fall every year. It'll be McDonald or Whelan next year if they're not delisted/retired.

Re: Robbo...

Bailey sited "parts" of Robbo's game which no doubt is the effort he put in and his accountability with forward pressure. Fair enough, I can accept this. Curiously though the term "recepture his form" was used in the context of Robbo playing for Casey. I must say, if Robbo had played a full season so far he would be miles in front on the Dees goals leaderboard and I can't honestly remember the last time a leading goalkicker from any club was dropped in context of form. I know Fev has been dropped due to his attitude and possibly others but not for form. In this context, some of our other forwards should go out and buy a lottery ticket.

There is more to this (rightly or wrongly) than just about Robbo. Bailey is using this as an example for future use to the players and I suppose this can only make us better in the long run. Needless to say though, it is easier to go through with these decisions when you are on the bottom of the ladder rather than competing for the top 8. Either way though, Robbo's efforts weren't acceptable on the weekend and he should atone for this and be back soon.

I will wait and see what happens before passing any judgement. But I can't say I'm too inspired by those changes going into a game against the best team in the league.

Listening to SEN bailey said something along the lines of we will not tolerate mediocrity, which follows on from last weeks omissions. IMO Martin will play as our main forward target this week, which i think is a good move, showed some nice things in the last quarter of the Hawthorn game.

I think its a good move. An in form robbo is great to have, but he is not in any form, his goalkicking has been pretty rubbish. Great to see that even while we are struggling Bailey is picking the team on form, not reputation.

Seems to me there is a fair amount of upside to this move- trying to look at it from a 'glass half-FULL' perspective at least.

Strengthening the message of discipline within the team is definitely a good thing. And with Robbo on the outer, it will hopefully make other players realise they need to take on more responsibility - which they'll have to do in the not-too-distant future anyway IMO.

I agree that Martin will prob be a forward target for us now too, and given his undoubted contested marking ability, should go well in the role... at least I hope so.

If he won't tolerate mediocrity then what the hell does that say for Miller? He's only kicked 1 more goal than Robertson and he's the played the whole damn season.

Does not make sense.

Robbo will be back. :thumbsu:

Miller's performances until last week had been reasonable. If he plays like he did against the Hawks again, we might have to consider recalling Newton .

All I can say is that I really hope Watts progresses in a major way over the next couple of weeks...:thumbsu:

It has to be based solely on that once incident in the goal square. To highlight other shots on goal instead of better options is wrong since Bate did it to Robbo just the week before.

Now begs the question...how long will he be dropped for?

My point is Bailey's explanation of not accepting "mediocrity" makes no sense by dropping Robertson.

Robertson - 4 games - 10 goals
Miller - 9 games - 11 goals

I wouldn't call his performances mediocre at all.

I must admit Robbo being dropped was a big surprise. Hopefully he can get straight back in next week. Martin up forward isn't a bad move actually. He was good up there against Geelong in the second half and Hawthorn in the last quarter. Hopefully Belly can have a game too, he has been due for years now.

For all the Robertson lovers -

Bate and Miller stay in the team cos they at least work hard and give effort.

Miller is a workhorse, despite his lack of talent.

And Bate leads the team in goal assists.

Robertson wouldnt know what a goal assist was.

Bailey is the coach I have dreamed of since Northey left.

Bailey is to Melbourne as Clarkson was to Hawthorn when he was appointed. Has a vision, has the guts to implement his vision and won't take second best.

It takes time to build a side from the ground up. We at Hawthorn were lucky to have good picks in good drafts. Melbourne have not been so lucky, especially with the introduction of Gold Coast and their raping of the draft process.

He is doing the right thing in moving aside players who won't be part of the medium/long tern success of the MFC, and concentrate on identifying youth to carry the club forward.

I don't have much time for Robert Walls but he did lay the foundations at Brisbane which set the grounding for Leigh Matthews and the success that followed.

Jason Dunstall appointed Clarkson ahead of more experienced coached then available..Eade, Terry Wallet, and Ayres. Melbourne have appointed Bailey and despite some disappointemts he has made great progress.

Keep the faith.

And let the tanking begin.
We will play like we did in the first 5 weeks. Get the ball and fall apart at half forward with no one to aim for deep.

Robbo was ordinary last week but didnt deserve to get dropped
