Butler kicked the most goals of any small forward this year.

I can’t believe Butler didn’t make the team. He was first in tackles and tackles inside 50 among the small forwards.

The dumb selectors picking three midfielders in the forward-line is a joke.

When?

Their ranking score has previously been a pretty good individual metric, but it has thrown up some interesting results this year. I think the shortened quarters and lack of goals have thrown out the weightings of particular acts that make up the final score.

Funny feeling it was coming into this season or last.

Someone may remember. I'm 99% certain it was something outlandish like that.

id have butler in too, get rid of one of the fwd flanks to the bench, then get rid of byrne jones and put daniel in there
but in the grand scheme of things it doesnt matter, fun talking point though

How so? Naitanui beat him Rd 1 but up until the Port game he otherwise dominated.

Still think it's a weird selection because his season was quite injury impaired.

Overall my biggest issue with the side was that for once they fell into the trap of "pick midfielders not quite good enough to make the starting midfield up forward". Usually when people whinge about that it's often at best exaggerated, but how much did Bont play up forward this season? Same applies for Dangerfield. And while Martin make sense as a mid/fwd, he shouldn't have been named instead of Butler and Papley types in the pocket....

Similarly with the wings. Macrae played a bit of wing but did better in the midfield, and I think his overall performances while solid weren't AA standard. And how much wing play did Guthrie have? It's one thing to shunt an onballer on the wing if no other wing was good enough, but I don't think they were conclusively better than Menegola, for example.

With that said despite the awful balance it's hard to think of anyone who was ignored that should've been there and I think you could argue that the names selected were fair enough.

Now let's talk about the 2 1/2 year age difference, and Gawn doing SFA for the first 5 years of his career.

I would love to watch Victoria vs WA and see Hawkins and Martin up forward, with Danger and Bont floating around half forward

More interestingly, Gawn was the best player in the league, had his best ever individual season this year, and had a better season than anyone has ever had in the last decade, according to the Champion Data Player Ranking Score

Champion data are great at counting stats but as soon as they start trying to rank players and lists on numbers it becomes a joke.

Agreed. Same as I’ve said before - if Wisden is picking a cricket side of the year they don’t go ‘well the 8th best batsman was unlucky because 7 others had career years - but he bowls a bit of off spin so we’ll sneak him in below the keeper.’

putting my bias hat on, if Danger played forward 70 per cent of the time I think he’d walk in as a forward anyway - but the fact is he doesn’t and hasn’t.
