By my reckoning we will have 5 rookies this year. Moller and Menegola will fill two positions and Lloyd on 6PR seemed to indicated one is reserved for Mellington.

That leaves two. The questions are:

Will the irishman take one of them or will he be outside the normal list if we choose to sign him?
Who else do we pick?

I would like Lester-Smith and another tall defender with the candidates being the likes of Vandeluer, Sully or Tippet.

Bower is training with us, so we must be looking at him.

I might be inclined to go with Conlon over Thorpe now. The potential upside vs the established body.

We are in our premiership window, so I want any player who can make an immediate difference so that is why I rate Thorp over conlon.

We have recruited three key forwards in the last two months. Why do we need another one?
Apeness could play next year, we need a key defender IMO. I don't buy this we'll get a key defender next year stuff. We need another one that can step in straight away. There seems to be a few floating around the state leagues.

I think Freo and the Pies are his best bets. Maybe the Dockers as a rookie.

Chris Cain
Club: Port Melbourne
D.O.B.: 14.7.87
Height: 181cm
Weight: 82kg

Medium Midfielder having an outstanding season with Port Melbourne in the VFL averaging 27 disposals as well as winning the Frank Johnson Medal as Victoria's best player versus Western Australia this year where he gathered 32 disposals. Has good speed , agility and excels at clearances.

Two things amazed me at the Draft. First being that Marsh went so late. The other was the non-selection of Darcy Hourigan. Don't care if most think we now have enough big forwards. If he's still available at our pick..... ffs just pick him up Bondy!

I've thought about that, I think recruiters are starting to realise 190cm = midfielder, 200cm = KPP lately. The kids are becoming bigger. Obviously i'm exaggerating slightly but the trend is heading towards bigger players. Someone around 191cm-192cm is not going to be able to man-handle a defender then leap above the loose defender ala Tom Hawkins. I'm glad we went for the 200cm fellas. I wasn't sold on McCarthy pre-draft, his frame seems small. I think GWS see him as a roaming big midfielder which will suit him. He mentioned pre-draft he models his game on Fyfe.

I'd love Conlan but I can't see us going after him as he would be too similar to Apeness, Sully is intresting, 20 year old KPD highlights look good, but not sure much else about him. We seem to be only targeting elite runners, and I don't know how he tested.

Well technically he is still available at our next pick. The fact no one drafted him suggests we would have been reaching to take him in the ND.

It'll be interesting to see if we go tall in the rookie draft to hedge our bets a little.
