But they haven’t. Show me the articles?

Each of those players is a better version now than they have ever been

Blah blah blah
So why couldn’t he break a tag, why has he been so easy to nullify in a way others haven’t been?

Though I suspect that if you don’t know the fantastical difference between “put his body in places it shouldn’t have been” and work rate, then I’m not hopeful of anything but an apricot-slice like response

Okay let’s take GWS as they’re the most prominent tagging team at the moment.

Round 3 Gold Coast vs GWS - Touk was tagged, had just 17 disposals at 59% efficiency.

Round 4 Fremantle vs GWS - Brayshaw was tagged for the first half and kept to 11 disposals.

“Suns' co-captain Miller was unable to shake the close attention of Lachlan Ash as he dropped under 29 touches for the first time in the past 19 matches.”

Last year Walsh against GWS, 20 and 29 disposals however just the 15 kicks across the two games and disposal efficiency of 61% and 62%.

“But that changed when Walsh faced one of the competition's premier taggers in Matt de Boer. The Giants' shut-down specialist started outside the square at centre bounces but kept Walsh in check at the other stoppages, restricting him to 10 handballs, a mere two kicks and little influence in the opening three quarters”

It’s well known that those guys have struggled with tags at times, yet it’s also well known that they’re three of the hardest running mids in the comp. Clearly shows that it’s not simply a matter of if you work hard enough taggers won’t keep up.

Body work, positioning, skills, speed, all factors that are relevant. Yes he couldn’t beat a tag and that makes him a lesser player because of it but its not a simple matter of “oh he just didn’t work hard enough”.

And yes, I know the difference between putting your body in dangerous places and work rate. I was trying to articulate how ridiculous it is that this is a guy who has put his body on the line for years for this club, while you’re an anonymous person sitting on the Internet. Yet you have the audacity to make claims like “oh he just didn’t work hard enough”.

Apricot slice confirmed.

What appalling analysis.

Can provide no substantiation so just plucks a couple of (singular) random games from thin air, decides the players were hard tagged (based on nothing at all), and somehow concludes that this is equivalent to an enduring phenomena observed over a stretch of time that Sloane hasn’t recovered from in 5 years

Nice one 👍

That presser he did was rather strange. He was talking gibberish that the injury is almost a good thing and that he's going to be much better physically after the time off. Does he realise his age and lack of performance over the last couple of years? I just thought it was a bit odd and demonstrated a lack of self awareness of where his career is at. He talked about how much he liked footy and maybe that's the case but I got the impression that he likes the money more and still thinks that he's a chance to get a contract extension. I hope they aren't giving him false hope.

What the **** are you talking about?

You claimed those three haven’t been susceptible to a tag. I gave you examples of times where there influence has been clearly nullified by a tagged. In those examples I gave you quoted saying they were hard tagged (no I didn’t just make it up). Either you don’t pay attention to those clubs or your just flat out lying for the sake of it, frankly I think it’s the latter given the type of poster you are. No I’m not going to go back through every game and give you every example where a tag has effected them. Touk hasn’t actually been tagged that often, however he was well held in that game. The other two had on several occasions last season their influence reduced by a tag.

Sloane is not in the same category as the other top mids of the era, part of the reason is that he struggles to break a tag. I’m not arguing that. But you seem to be pushing this ridiculous over simplified argument that all it takes to beat a tag is just running hard, yet three of the hardest running mids in the game currently have all at one point or another been successfully tagged. Clearly it’s not just about running.

All this talk of tagging makes me think back to how roo let mcleod, edwards etc know how he could help them be rid of a tag later in roo's career. If they were being tagged just run the tag past him wherever he was stationed and it generally ended with the tagger lying on the ground after heavy body contact from roo. Ahh the good old days

That’s just not true.

Touk Miller, Sam Walsh and Andy Brayshaw have all struggled with a tag in recent years. Are you seriously suggesting those guys don’t work hard enough?

We can have a legitimate discussion about whether Sloane right now is doing what’s in the best interests of the club, or the quality of player he has been, but to suggest he couldn’t break a tag because he wasn’t willing to work hard enough is ******* laughable. He has time and again put his body in places it should never be for the sake of this club and you’re taking pot shots from an anonymous Internet forum when his career is likely over. Grow up.
They are in the form of their lives?

A role for FOG

Why is anyone getting annoyed at Rory Sloane. He has a contract. His job is to get on the park and perform. He doesn’t select the side.

Why isn’t anyone getting annoyed at Justin Reid or Matthew Nicks?

As list manager, it’s Justin Reid responsibility to organize the list in the best possible way. He gave him the contact. Rory only did what 99% of people would do and accept it.

Matthew Nicks is the senior coach. As a leader, he needs to make the hard decisions on who plays and who doesn’t. He needs to have the hard conversation with Rory to retire or keep going. If they keep him on, Rory is not under any obligation to retire, give any money back or allow a younger player to player.

Get annoyed at Nicks or Reid if you disagree with Sloane continuing on.

And the tone deaf award goes to

Newsflash: Good players have bad games

Sloane's been on a downward trend since Tassy 2017

This clown was actually cherry picking the odd quarter at a time

He's also chosen three players at their peak age and ability, who have actually proven they can get past a tag and are in absolute A-grade form as examples vs....

......a 32yr old

That's right up there with johnny boy's Rachele and Tex comparison activity

You’re all completely missing the point of what I said.

Sloane couldn’t beat a tag and has been on the decline for some time and should have had his midfield minutes significantly reduced long ago. I never argued any of that.

I had an issue with Sanders suggesting that a) beating a tag is simply about running hard enough, b) Sloane wasn’t willing to work hard enough to beat a tag. That’s why I mentioned those three players, because they have shown they can be tagged, which if beating a tag were simply about running hard enough wouldn’t happen.
Breaking a tag is only about hard work. And as an inside, clearance specialist he should have been much harder to shut down that he was.

A player who wills himself from contest is very hard to stop

This is the comment I was replying to.

I think it’s silly to say that breaking a tag is “only about hard work”.

But yeah, if Sanders wants to keep taking pot shots about the work ethic of a guy who’s played 200 games at the elite level from behind his keyboard then good for him.

We can discuss selection, players ability etc. but I’ve always had an issue with people challenging the work ethic or courage of AFL players, particularly those who’ve played as much footy as Sloane.

Some people just have off days.

How do you know he wouldn’t be reading this? he’s got a lot of time on his hands right now… nonetheless, he deserves better.
The club deserves better for what they have paid him. Up there with Gibbs for biggest bandit of recent times. Looking forward to the end of 2023 when he is off our books.

I'd say the club got exactly what it deserved. They let a desired PR outcome influence list management decisions. They played themselves.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

When he signed the contract at the end of 2018 we still considered ourselves in the window, many people tipped us to bounce back in 2019 and be a contender.

Obviously plenty of things were rotten and that wasn’t going to happen but at the time it was reasonable to think that we needed him and if we had to wear a bit of pain at the end of his contract so be it.

As for now is his contract actually hurting us that much? We still had the money to chase Dawson, and we’ve still been able to re-sign most of the important young players.

Also, hasn’t it been widely reported that we have a “war chest”. Don’t think Sloane’s money has hurt us at all, the contract length however..

Rubbish.

Sloane is being paid big bucks and he has been crap since 2017..
Yeah our list is absolutely flying, isn't it ?
Could we use an extra 800k a yr to pay an A grade midfielder ?
Sloane was only captain material at his peak when his on field drive was awesome.
Hearing him talk is just PR dribble, I doubt he adds anything to the team now on or off the field.
