I think the thing with sloane is that he’s built his career on being a hard worker and a supreme optimist

That’s his DNA ( sh1t term but true in his case )

He’s been told his whole life that he can’t do things and he’s always proven them wrong so he’s going to keep being himself ….. but it’s time for the club to move on and give captaincy to Dawson
Agree with Dawson its about moving forward and beyond 2023 and looking at making finals in a few years time.

Whilst Keays had good intentions, this type of commentary isn’t helpful but it’s the result of the club not getting on the front foot and sticking to the stupid timeline of Feb to make a decision.

So if Sloane doesn’t get the captaincy and beforehand players continue to state he should be, how does that impact on the new captain?

As for a new recruit, does Keays realise Sloanes age and remember his form prior to the injury?

But leadership group needs to stick together I guess.
Keays and Sloane can be co captains for all I care..

as long as it’s in the SANFL side…

plus all the function invites. Lots of invitations sent the way of the AFC captain.

I feel like I am reading the same posts from 40 pages ago!

I think we get it boys. Rory is selfish and all about Rory, shouldn’t be captain and shouldn’t get a game

Do I get to repost this in another 40 pages time

Enters a thread titled "Rory Sloane - should he continue as captain" and complains that people are posting about whether Rory should remain captain. Plenty of other threads that aren't discussing this if it upsets you.

Just like some reminiscing about the old days - when you still rated Rory as a person and a player, tell a bit of the story when he lost you. You have been off him for a while (early this season at least). Some background would be great

I’ll tell you mine.

He held out at a time where we needed loyalty. Which would be fine, it’s a business and he’s a professional athlete.

However the deal was overs at the time, and he’s been average and or injured since making it worse.

the very moment that he stood in front of cameras and microphones to tell everyone how brilliant the collective minds camp was when he knew there was turmoil among the list. And that was well before it was discovered that his words were the actual marketing material. I thought it was awful leadership even when I thought he'd used his own words. I've no problem with him as a player excepting the issue we have with pushing injured seniors to the brink by playing them under duress. Especially when we're rebuilding. Keays and Doedee the latest who have impacted their preseason in favour of playing relatively poorly in a bunch of dead rubbers.

I couldn’t deny him that. What does need to be denied though is the prevailing view that Rory is about anything but himself. He got his, which he’s entitled to do, but he’s not sacrificed anything. And nor did Tex whilst we're at it, he just backended his deal. Nothing to suggest that he gave anything back.

These guys are professional sportspersons and even if they had a moment where they weren’t thinking about themselves, there’s no way their agent wouldn’t instantly smack some sense into them. My grandfather was a professional sportsman, his weekly wage when he was in England would have bought a block of land in the Plympton development. He’s quoted as saying along the lines of, ‘I ……… because it pays me the most, if I could earn more doing something different then I’d do that instead’.

Nothing has changed, except honesty.

Agree, he got what he wanted, a nice 5 year contract (at the age of 28) followed by the captaincy (since 2019).

Now he needs to read the room and relinquish the captaincy.

A lot of what you say I agree with
There is the company line
But how does that feel to others below ?

Collective minds.

Purely and simply, as a captain you stand up for your team mates and Rory acted like he was head of HR during the fallout.

To many, it is an unforgivable sin and one that showed that although he can drag team mates with him on the field, he just can’t lead.
”unforgivable sin”? For what exactly, trying to contain the damage that was done by the media, McClure et al.?

Also, his words were not in defence for everything that went on in the camp, but merely him stating that he got something positive out of it. That’s not a lie, but a fact on how he felt. And the words were matched with the actions, in that if the camp was mentally damaging him to the point he felt the culture was so bad…why the heck did he chose to stay with us? And along with everyone else choosing to stay exact for Blues boy McGovern?

just a coincidence that his words happened to match exactly the marketing material.

Held out or maximised his last deal? We did pay overs - particularly length - at the time but also the management of the club had completely blown the place up. It can’t have been a fun place to work and the deal didn’t appear to cost us anyone.

Nah just don't.

Look, I'm not going to be a dick about this...and I could.

He did defend the camp, he used words that he was told to use by Crows management at the time and he didn't flinch. He is captain, in charge of a group of men and even more important, a group of young men and what he did that day when he said he was "a better husband and father" was to show to everyone "I will do or say anything as long as the money is right"

And that is Rory in a nutshell, is the money right?

This answers your question of why did he stay...the money was right.

I'd ponder this question to you, if the culture wasn't bad, why did we get independent people to do a review, sack the coach, assistant coach, Burton and then shuffle Chapman off? Why would you do that if the culture wasn't bad?

Don't stick a flag in the ground over the events of 2017-2019, there really is no defending it.

Honestly, the last thing we need to do to move on, is taking the captaincy off the guy who was defending it, he can't lead his men when he won't stand up for them.

Love Rory as a player but he has always been a very uninspiring leader, that is why Walsh didn't make him captain.

You can say what you want to say of Rory as a captain, it’s an opinion thread after all. But to hang him off a sentence or 2 in response to how he felt about the camp is just bonkers. You are making a lot of assumptions which is impossible to be proven true or false.

Did he stay for the money? Probably. But which AFL star who signs a contract extension isn’t doing it for the love of money?! Did he lie about the camp? We can at least say his actions matched with his words by him staying, and along with the actions of everyone else by them staying. You can’t just ignore the actions.

I agree he has been very inert regarding his media responses, but uninspiring…?
Have you ever known an AFL player who’s injured his feet, knee, appendix, detached retina, among other body injuries, and still want to carry on playing after 30? That’s a sign of courage and willing to put his body on the line for the club. Again, his actions are matching his words.

I don’t really care if he is captain in 2023. Just want to talk about some perpetual opinions going around about Rory that is talked about as if they’re proven facts.

Victorian kid gets picked in 3rd Round by the Crows.
Looks a goer, some flaws, some injuries, but works hard and debuts by the end of his first season.
Just keeps getting better, an important part of the 2012 Finals push, one of a trio of young Crows the fans pin their hopes on, along with Dangerfield and Walker.
Crows experience their first self-inflicted off-field disaster, he is made co-captain with Dangerfield at a young age.
Crows appoint Phil Walsh and Walker as Captain - Sloane continues to output at a high level on field, a fan favourite.
Walsh tragically dies and Dangerfield returns home to Victoria.
Sloane steps up to become one of the premier players in the AFL. He consistently wins games for Crows when they're on the line. He consistently kicks goals when his team needs him too. He and Walker lead the Crows, with Pyke as Coach, to the top of the tree, almost.
The Crows continue to self-inflict disaster off the field. While short term greats spit the dummy, Sloane and his Victorian partner commit the rest of his career to being an Adelaide player despite offers to return home and being on the cusp of beginning a family.
Personal tragedy for both the Sloanes and the Walkers, separate to the poor off-field management the Crows are experiencing, a club review, a complete rebuild off field and then on.
Sloane is made captain. Covid. Bottom of the ladder. Injuries. Poor form. 2020 is as low as it goes.
His leadership remains positive. The Crows continue to rebuild under Nicks. 2021 and 2022 see some good wins, some bad games, but obvious improvement and buy-in from the playing group.
Sloane is mainly injured, but his good mate Walker defies the odds and is playing the best footy of his career.
Sloane is about to enter his 15th season and the cesspit that is the Adelaide Crows BigFooty board disgracefully bag the crap out of one of the Adelaide Football Club's true champions, because he might be putting his hand up to Captain the club for another season.
My bet is Sloane will leave the club in a better place than when he started - both in this stint as captain and when he joined in 2009. Whether he and the club decides to skipper this year or not.
What he has left to give on the football field remains to be seen. Hopefully he has some opportunities to inspire his teammates and supporters once more and I expect the crowd at Adelaide Oval will give him the ovation and respect he has earned and deserves - unlike the disgraceful commentary on this thread.

You skipped:

“held out for a 5 year deal to take him to 33, not an ideal age to finish a 5 year deal on”
“parroted the Collective Minds propaganda word for word when players at the club needed his support”
“wants to keep the captaincy when it’s in the club best interests to appoint a new one, rather than have the drama of potentially dropping the captain given his form prior to injury, where he fits, coming off an injury and his age”

Besides that it was pretty good

No issue with what you have written, I think most as well as myself think it’s just the right time to pass it on

Sloane has been a great soldier, but not much of a captain.

I can’t remember too many games he “won off his own boot” … always in the trenches.

If tagged is basically ineffective as a midfielder.

Never that quick, never that effective as a goal scorer.

Hard as nails, does love the contact. Loved his attitude on field since day one.

Now, he needs to step aside. Rory was never really the leader of this group. Tex was. Sloane was holding the spot in name only.

Before Dawson, i was “Doedee all the way” … but it is now clear that Jordan is THE standout candidate for captain.

I was a huge Sloane fan - I don't think we have ever had a more courageous player. His on field has been inspirational.

However, when our playing group was fractured, when they needed a leader and Captain to support and care for them, he planted his stake alongside Burton and the Collective Morons.
That's unforgivable.

To still have him as Captain just keeps the issue lingering. We needed a clean break from it and he should have stepped aside already.

I think bringing up the fracturing from the Camp is pretty silly now. It's 5 years ago, the majority (if not all) of pissed off people are long gone. The ones who organised it are long gone. I agree Sloane shouldn't be captain this year, but not because of anything that happened then, but because it's time. It's time for us as a Club to prepare for the next stage of this journey - and that's with a player who will Captain us to our next tilt at a flag. Time for Sloaney to take a step back and just enjoy his footy, just like Tex has done.
