Dawson is set to be named captain.
I get I don’t follow the crows, but what motive could I possibly have, to tell a bunch of randoms on the internet that they’re going to name a particular person captain, when in fact the will name someone else?
well Im happy to revisit this convo in a couple of weeks

SEN : Bryce Gibbs : Dawson has the “come with me boys” , and would back him to be the next captain”

Think he is spot on with Dawson but might struggle to get a bet on.👿

Harry Schoenberg about to come on radio.

Rory won't give it up and Nix is too weak to take it from him. Rory will be captain 2023.

Seems the consensus is that Dawson should be made next captain, which I agree. Here’s food for thought: Dawson made captain in 2023 vs in 2024, how much is it really going to change our future?

The only way it would have an impact is if Dawson went and said "give me the captaincy or I'm out". Other then that, **** all. Sloane is quite likely a lock regardless, owing to how little experienced players we have, reputation and all that jazz.

Heard from a matchday staff member at the club recently that Dawson is the most likely next Captain. He gets on well with all the different social groups, is very well respected already and has also taken on community leadership opportunities. He has ticked every box. Doedee is meant to be a pretty good guy too, but I think he tends to stick with his own social group. The person also believed that Sloane would remain captain for 2023 though.

Thanks for the update... um... Dante Thunderstone

No, clogging up a key position when your form has been trash for multiple seasons is selfish and bad leadership.

But hey maybe the guy who regurgitated crackpot camp talking points went to the club and offered to play predominantly up forward, and the club told him no, they need him in the guts! We just don't know!

Or perhaps those in charge make the decisions they are paid to make. Not Sloanes call and if the club/coaches choose to keep him there then so be it - if they want to move him a quiet word in his ear would see the same media statement that Pendlebury and Ziebell have put out in the last few weeks

Rory is about Rory, he won't be stepping down.

It doesn’t matter what Rory is about - he doesn’t choose who the captain is. And the three that stepped down - you don’t think the coaches in discussion with them have directed the outcome. If those clubs asked them to stay on as captain do you think those players would have said no?

Well hopefully it wouldn’t mean he’s a lock to play if his form didn’t warrant it.
We ain’t dropping the captain for poor form.

yes, the earlier the transition the better. Plus, if Rory really struggles then he'll be reducing our overall performance, which sets back our rebuild and winning culture. Watching the captain get selected whilst not deserving it will be terrible for the team first and winning culture that we're trying to build.

I love the way he’s tried to pitch Sloane to stay captain next year again without saying it, he flogged this theory a few weeks back

not as subtle as he thinks he is. 'I too think it should be Dawson, but, what if it was still Sloane, this would be good right'. No, no it wouldn't.

Doedee no longer in the conversation to be Captain even if he was the best candidate. You can't have a Captain who is weighing options to stay at the club.

In my opinion it sets a direction and fresh look that we need. Depending on Sloane's form you can't have a Captain who is borderline selection. It becomes a massive distraction.

Even the fact he hasn't stepped down shows a real lack of awareness.

It probably won't make us win a flag or even make the 8 but the argument for Sloane continuing on for one more year when cooked and probably not best 22 is just as easily made. Shouldn't we be looking to the future and the advantages of a new captain settling into the job early? That means next year he should in theory be a better captain.

Looking at a pro/cons analysis of Rory remaining skipper, the cons outweigh the pros.

Further to that most items in the pro column can still be undertaken without the C next to his name.

The items in the cons are potentially impacting on the culture and future direction of the team.

Should Dawson be our guy, then pull the trigger now.

No brainer.

It's like he's physically incapable of disagreeing with the club. He knows what needs to happen but he knows there's a chance the club makes the wrong decision and rather than just call out a mistake, he's mentally preparing himself to agree with a bad decision and looking to others for validation.

This also tells me there has been no direction from above

The player
The Media Team
The Coaching Group?
The Executive

In most high profile leagues clubs make decisions months ahead. Lets stop pretending the players choose the captain and understand there are times 'the club' steps in

Any smart organisation would know the special circumstances Sloane found himself in - I mean they've had 9 months - they would/should have discussed this in November at a minimum.

That the media organisation have NOT instructed players on a suitable response tells me
1. The club will continue with Sloane
2. The club is not smart

Didn't 7 news say a decision would be early in the new year?

Not peep since, what gives?
Yep. February I thought

But as above the media response hasnt altered from the players

Even a ' yeah Rory has been great and I think we decide in February' is all thats needed

It'll mean Sloane will be a lock for every game this year, potentially restricting games for a younger guy, stalling development.
