Totally agree. There was a great S.Hill tackle on Stringer, he just targeted the hips and drove into him. Stringer had no chance to handball, nothing.. as compared to the other times where he wiggled out of wrist tackles..
We miss a lot of tackles because we have this 'containment' type of approach to tackling, bring back the Troy Cook pile drivers. I have never understood the strange tackling technique in footy, I realize it's to prevent the handball but I suspect most won't be making many efficient handballs while lying on the turf...
You don't always have enough momentum to drive someone into the ground when you tackle them. You have to take the arms because if you don't it basically does nothing.
You can learn a lot in relation to tackling technique from rugby. The defenders usually start from a standing start or with only a little momentum. Watch the hips, not the ball and tackle around the legs (thighs); they lose their stability more as compared to a tackle around the waist, where the opposition can create a wider base by spreading their legs.

Rugby tackles are shit and do not work in footy. There's nothing wrong with a good hard tackle taken from Aussie Rules – drop the knees at the right time and bring them down, it's not hard.

I hate the OOB rule too but the last sentence is not true: there is the knock the ball down penalty in rugby, for example, that relies on an adjudication of player intentions

There's intentional grounding in gridiron, something that by its very name requires the refs to make a call of intent.

Or as we used to call it in my day...Friday night at the Drive-In.:)

Rugby tackles are not shit, unless your talking about league. The stronger tackle and drive comes from your hips not your arms, it is easier to break arm tackles. It is also much easier to not miss when you target the hips, the opposition player is going to go where their hips go.
I'll give you an example, in the game Ibbo had a chance to tackle a bulldogs player approaching the 50, he stopped 3-4 metres short of him to 'contain' with his arms spread out, the bulldog player juked him to the left and kicked a long goal. Now if Ibbo had driven right at him into the hips whilst he had momentum he'd of put him in the ground.

You don't need momentum, you drive with your hips, can do it standing still. Check out how the Bont, lets them arm tackle around the waist, stands there, swivels, arms free and handballs away. Drive him and he's not going to get an accurate handball off.

It's not good. It encourages dangerous tackles and is far too stiff and uptight an-...

Sorry, I'm out. Just gotta know when it ain't working and this isn't for me. Out of this thread. The good posters stay silent... or don't sign up.

Way off with that gem.

The language about the midfield being sorted seemed to fit Roos speak - but Walls was the coach that gave Ross Lyon his debut as a player and his first role as an assistant coach.

Anyway, I would like to see that scathing critique of the Fremantle players that was written after we lost 2015 Preliminary final. I reckon almost every player named by Walls in that article has been moved on or dropped.

Nick Dal Santo is very close with the likes of Lee Spurr and a couple of the other freo boys in that group, just for the people wondering a few pages back.
Where did you get the info that Spurr and Dal Santo are very good friends
