Ross Smith welcome to Tigerland

To me, the subtext of the HUN article is that Hardwick was having a major communication problem on the defensive side of things with the assistants he had - he's gone for a bloke who knows the whole team defensive side of what he's trying to implement and can give him exactly what he's after. And the further subtext is that *someone* dropped the ball in this area this year and that Hardwick has gone and got somebody who won't.

In all honesty, that's the most encouraging news on the coaching front that I've heard from the club in nigh on three years, because the above problem is a major part of what I've been looking at for the last two years and getting seriously cranky about. When Martin, Cotchin and Deledio are serial offenders game after game in basic defensive errors like keeping touch and being goal side of their opponent, everyone with a football brain knows that something is rotten in Denmark.

Maybe, just maybe, 'everyone' includes Hardwick this time?

Optimism for next season before September is through?

Maybe - welcome aboard Omyth. ;)

That someone would be leppitch right?

That someone would be leppitch right?

I have no idea tc, everything we've seen from Leppitsch with our key talls this year indicates that he's a very good coach and that nobody did a better job in their field. The improvement in Rance and Grimes alone was more than enough to give him a tick from what I know of the situation. How much responsibility he took for things like our rebound from defense, or our 'defense' when the opposition is kicking in or has the ball in general play, only the inner sanctum would know.

What I'm assuming, is that Omyth will be Secretary of Defense and that it just became a major cabinet position, because nobody was covering it adequately in the system we had...for whatever reason.

That's cause for celebration in my book. ;)

Thought u meant the Hun said he wasn't coming to Richmond? It mentions nothing about him at all. At a guess he's still in the running. Whoever gets him will keep it in-house till after GF week as its a big announcement for any club.

If we announced Smith now then wouldn't we also announce Craig as well if we know he is coming.

Why would we?
Although Ross Smith has a very very important job it's hardly a big signing that will see big media coverage like a Neil Craig would and in order to get the sponsors coverage we wait until after the GF to announce it.
No real rush to announce it anyway they don't return to training for another 3-4 weeks.
This one was probably only confirmed because it was already on the net.
I'm confident Neil Craig is ours and if he isn't we move on and get somebody else just don't get desperate and reach for him.

we are on the same page dude...I mean come on...Neil Craig? we can become the home of first name names..lets get someone like a John Russell and we can top it off with trading for Colin Sylvia to put the icing on the cake. ;)

Been there, done that... :p

I think the main issue with getting Neil Craig is what's known as the "men with two first names" syndrome.

Neil Craig
Craig Cameron
Francis Jackson
Garry Cameron (Board member)
Shannon Gordon (Finance manager)
Luke Murray (Indigenous Coordinator)
Simon Derrick (Marketing)
Matthew Owen (Retail)
Chris Clay (Retail)
Simon Matthews (Media)
Kim Stephens (Psych)
Tim Clarke (Development Coach)
Matthew Clarke (Recruiting)
Richard Taylor (Recruiting)
Adam Douglas (Strength Coach)
Paul Cameron (Chaplain)

There's just too much of it IMO

Pretty sound logic.

Doesnt necessarily mean hes not, just that there is no decision yet

I read defence pressure as tacking and opposition analysis as spy.

So he's a tackling spy.

more a tacking spy....i think we are going to rewrite the way footy is played and we are looking at the way they sail yachts, in order to be the first team to be lauch a spinnaker when we have the wind and then tack to starboard when against it.....masterstroke by Dimma..;)

I would have preferred not to have gotten Ross Smith. I would have preferred someone from a different club. While i understand that Hardwick and Smith will have different skill sets, they effectively have been a part of the same system.

At the end of the day, potentially it won't matter if we have 1 head coach and an assistant coach coming from the same opposition team from the same period. Maybe Ross has new ideas that he would like to implement, and can't do so at the Hawks.

It looks as (and you would have to think) that Hardwick instigated the move. And given Ross is on a 3 year deal, it seems as if Hardwick thinks he's going to be around in 2013 at least.

Given that football in recent times has seen most (if not all) 18 players pushing into an opposition's forward 50, sound defensive skills and strategies are important for all players - no longer the exclusive domain of your back 6. It's equally important in front 50 to lock ball in and around stoppages to minimise opposition clearances. You could go on an on into defensive presses on kickouts, others have spoken of our players being caught out ball-watching or allowing their opponent to get goal-side, tackling (and tacking:D) etc. Hopefully Omith will address a lot of these areas and more.

Defence is very much a mind-set and contagious. Good defensive teams have a huge psychological advantage as they are intimidating to come up against. And every premier team from as far back as I can recall had a major focus on it's defence. To hire a specialist coach in this area is a very good appointment

It will come in handy when we are fighting a 3-6 goal breeze. Smart work RFC. He's just paid for himself . Pity we didn't have him in the box against Gold Coast in Cairns this year we would of finished 9th again.
