Yep, he was always a defender at AFL level and a very good one at that.

Although I hate comparing players I have no doubt grimes is best playing that Luke hodge role in the backline
Bloody good third man in player he reads it in the air as well as anyone

I also think he is a very good exponent of the "get it out of there" approach to clearing the back line rather than stuffing around with the footy - which I think will be a key part of Roos' game plan.

Yeah he has that urgency about him as you said of let's get it out of here
He suits having the game in front of him , I hope frawleys rebounding picks up again as well because with those 2 rebounding we will be a lot better

These threads are really just too much fun not to have. Just for that extra bit of hope whilst Steve Smith is getting pinged back into the 30th row of the second tier at the MCG by Ian Bell and Mitch Clark's foot gets run over by Mark Neeld's car on the way back from Steven Dank's medical practice.

The side could look like this (format courtesy of Headless):

B: Terlich - Frawley - Garland
HB: Grimes - McDonald - Toumpas
C: Viney - Watts - Vince
HF: Howe - Clark - Cross
F: Hogan - Dawes - Kent
R: Jamar - N Jones - Trengove
I/C: Tyson - Michie - Fitzpatrick - L Dunn

Emg: Fitzpatrick - Strauss - Blease

Depth: Evans, M Jones, Tapscott, etc.

I don't mind it. Midfield depth is certainly a lot stronger. Hopefully Roos can turn Strauss, Blease and Tapscott into serious contenders.

That is looking really exciting. How do your draft prospects add to that? (I went to the draft on the GC. Recommend it)

no-one mentioning the other guy we got from Adelaide with Bernie, Aiden Riley. Guy's meant to be a clearance specialist and NO-ONE has mentioned him. No-one thinks he may be in our best 22. That's surprising, considering our midfield was so bad that the term 'shit' was actually a complement.

Yeah good call , you would think he's a massive chance of round 1

Riley's barely trained. If at all. I'm not sure if he's come off pre season surgery or something along the lines, saw him having a coffee with Kent on Friday and that's the only time I've really seen him so he probably is coming off surgery but cannot train with the rehab group at the same time (much like Dawes who's only just started running coming off an arthroscope).

Speaking of which, this is based on what I've seen at training so far this pre season. I've made consideration based on who's been in the rehab group, so excuse me for some selections which would baffle you.

Basically this would be my 22 if we played a game tomorrow.

B Dunn Frawley Garland
HB Grimes McDonald Terlich
C Vince Cross Watts
HF Howe Fitzpatrick Trengove
F Hogan Clark Kennedy-Harris
R Spencer N.Jones Viney
IC Toumpas Clisby Michie
S M.Jones

E Strauss Pedersen Evans

There are a few who would normally be in but haven't been training due to injury. Dawes does not command a round one spot at the moment as he recovers from his arthroscope. Kent has not trained as explained above. Salem and Hunt need to put on a bit of muscle. Kennedy-Harris plays - Byrnes is in rehab, Blease is in rehab. Besides I'd rather Kennedy-Harris regardless at the moment. McKenzie has been in rehab. Curious to see what Roos does and whether he employs the tag using him or someone else. Clisby has spent a bit of time in rehab. At the moment the elevated rookies won't come in. But there's still a little way to go, an injury may open the way.

We just paid a fair chunk of draft pick for Dom Tyson, so hopefully he is in your plans mate ;)

Anyone with Dunn in their team knows footy too, leave him out at your peril

Tyson is most definitely in my plans. As I said, I've based this off what I've seen at training so far. Since Tyson has not yet trained with the main group due to his hamstring injury, I've left him out for now and will wait for a proper assessment before working out where he fits.

It would probably mean he takes Matt Jones place on the bench, which could force a change in who is the sub.

Thanks - really interesting exercise this. Like a footy barometer. Who's hot right now, who's got some work to do.

An only very minor change to tasmanlvr's posted Round 1 team, which I thought could get us a few wins.

B Dunn Frawley Garland
HB Grimes McDonald Terlich
C Vince Cross Watts
HF Howe Fitzpatrick Trengove
F Hogan Clark Kennedy-Harris
R Spencer N.Jones Viney
IC Toumpas Dyson Michie
S Clisby
E Strauss Dawes/Pedersen Evans

Just to confirm, is Dyson a nickname combining 'Dom' and 'Tyson', or do people genuinely think that's his name?

Normally I'd be concerned seeing Spencer's name in our best 22 but it sounds like he's really come into his own this preseason. Certainly showed a lot of promise in the back half of 2013. Great advertisement for perseverance.

Riley broke his leg pretty severely mid-year.

If this side rolls out round 1, I'd be stoked to say the least. Cherry on top is Roos in the coaches box.
