Funny that a lot of people on this forum thought Martin was gone for sure at the end of the year & now he's the leagues best ruckman and we have too many rucks. Short memories it seems.

Woah woah woah, I enjoy watching Martin but let's not go overboard! His handballing is better than Leuey's and I'd suggest Leuey is a better kick, but come on, elite clearances?? I still worry about some of his possessions if their isn't a clear target to pass to within a short distance.
Yes, for a ruckman Martin is elite at winning clearances. He is averaging 4 per game and 1.6 centre clearances a game ranking him in the top 3 for ruckman in both categories.

When fit Leuenberger is in the first 5 players picked. Couldn't disagree more with the people that think he isn't our starting ruckman. Martin has been good, but I'd argue apart from the bulldogs game, he has been solid without dominating. Dominating in the ruck department is something berger is very capable of doing.

The thing is, people have very short memories. The same people that are calling for Leueneberger's head were the same ones saying Martin was finished at the start of the season. Time is a funny aspect.

But yet never has. Something Martin could be capable of as well. Remember he has only played 15 or so games the last 3 and a half years, with half of them as a forward under Voss. He has had huge chunks of seasons out due to poor form in the forward line and injury. He needs to smash this pre season and bond with out midfielders and he will only get better from here on out.

Whose calling for his head exactly?

Not sure I've read one comment to the contrary.
I remember one from OldDen actually.

I can understand the perception from this year that he has been below standard, but so was the rest of the team during those rounds. And then he has been injured since then.

In my opinion Leuey has shown that given a few weeks to knock the rust off, he can be the dominant ruckman and another running midfielder simultaneously. He beat ruckmen throughout 2012 and 2013, including Minson, Cox and McEvoy.

Of course, the implication of the above is that he is injury prone. Quite, in fact, which ultimately impacts on his effectiveness as a player. You can't rate a player on potential, obviously.

Yeah Leuey's had injuries but when was the last time a Brisbane ruckman played out two seasons in a row?

Brown: He will be an assistant coach for us next year. Looking forward to a coaching panel of Leppa, Black, Brown...
I think we really need to step away from recruiting former players into the box. At the end of the day, Black and Brown have been cut from the exact same cloth - Leigh and Voss. They don't bring anything new to the table. Sure they'll have different views but we really need fresh input and experience. Not for a second am I taking anything away from Black the player but he shouldn't be in charge of our forwards. I know he doesn't have the cattle to work with but our structures inside 50 have been deplorable this year. Black should, at best, be the mid's coach, or he should've left Brisbane altogether to ply his trade elsewhere. IMO, our most effectively functioning forward line was when Harvey was in charge.

I agree with this as a general rule however brisbane will always struggle to attract high quality assistant coaches moreso now wih our poor facilities and smal football budget.

Regardless of what cloth black and brown are cut from as both will likely be hall of famers in time, keeping these kind of players involved in the club can only be good to the clubs overall fabric.

Usually id agree and want some variety in our coaching panel, but these arent just former players, these guys are something special, not just as former players at our club, but the entire AFL.

We will be looking for another addition to the coaches box for next year, so a good chance to add some outside experience there.

Claye Beams - I reckon 2015 will be the year Claye Beams has a breakout season. He's been solid in his return this year from injury and has shown some good signs as he gets continuity in his game. A full pre-season and he will be one of the young Lions players to watch out for next year.

Michael Close - Solid contested marker of the footy, good size and is a beautiful kick of the footy from the set shot. Definitely one player who will benefit from another pre-season or two. He's one player who needs to be given more games.

Brent Staker - Last year Staker kicked 21 goals from just 15 games and was a match winner on a couple of occasions. A utility who can play a variety of roles he will be a handy inclusion in 2015 and will also give the Lions a tall marking target inside 50. He will make a huge difference when he returns to the side next year.

Marco Paparone - If he can bulk up a bit more and get stronger threw the core, he could hold down a key forward spot in the next few years. He's got plenty of potential and is young and still quite raw, but he's one player who's going to benefit greatly with more games under his belt.

Stefan Martin - He will benefit greatly with Leuenberger in the side, because it means Martin can play as that forward/second ruck and he can also play as a center half forward. I reckon he's the ideal back up ruck for Leuenberger.

There's no doubt that Brisbane can improve a lot next year if they can have most of their players stay injury free. With Rich, Leuenberger and Staker all back, another pre-season for the young blokes and Brisbane will be on the up in season 2015.

Interesting to get the viewpoint from another teams supporter. I don't think Hanley will play down back again though. Given his ability to improve every season I think he'll take the next step and become our best midfielder in 2015. He's shown in the last month or two he has the ability to start racking up big numbers and win the contested footy and clearances. He probably has to work on his accountability but next year he could start to rack up Tom Rockliff-like stats with Dan Rich-like hurt factor with his disposal.

Pretty good work WWSD!

I agree with Jackess about Hanley though.. I'm happy with the way our back 6 have been going of late and Hanley is a must in the midfield. I'd inclined to give Rich more of a go down back than to play Hanley there.

I also think Merrett must play forward next year. We just don't have any big bodies that can crash a pack like him. Close may eventually develop into that role but is not there yet, ditto Freeman. I think West, Martin and Leuey can all play forward at times but still don't provide that physical presence up forward that our structure will require.

These comments from Chris Johnson were encouraging in terms of the recent depth conversations.

“Our depth wasn’t great,” Johnson said of the dominant Lions’ teams of 2001-03.

“Week to week, we had 20 picked straight away, and it was probably only a handful of guys fighting it out for that 21st or 22nd position.

“We had the core of the team that didn’t change a lot and that probably made us the team that we were.”

I'm growing more confident that the core of the side we're building is strong - our depth may be appalling, but with some luck it may not affect us as it didn't affect the premiership sides too much (until after the premiership years, of course).
