Took a while to compose it, but I don't think I left anyone important out. Bewick and cutler will provide the back half with composure, skill and good DE.

B: Adcock, Clarke, Patfull
HB: Bewick, McGuire, Cutler
C: Aish, Hanley, Rich
HF: Mayes, Close, Papperone
F: Zorko, Merret, Green

Harwood? In for Gardiner or Cutler?

I assume you have retired McGrath? Probably have to book two seats on planes for him by next year:p

Cutler is in for hardwood. While hardwood is good, I feel cutler could be a future premiership running defender, I unfortunately don't see hardwood there.
Cutler is really talented IMO.

Not sure I agree, Harwood is a very good kick who has some pace and can defend solidly. At the same time, I am certainly not saying Cutler couldn't become a better defender.

Cutler, IMO, is a better kick. In several games he had over 15 disposals with 70+ DE.
At this stage, hardwood is probably a better defender tho.

Your probably right at this stage. I do see Cutler best 22 in the future tho.
I see Cutler best 22 next year for sure. He is almost best 22 now.
With another full preseason ahead of him I definitely think he'll be a starter for us.

I think Cutler has alot more class than Harwood. You can see it already.

He has to be able to do a defensive job as well if he's going to take Harwood's role.

FB: Patfull Goose Gardiner
HB: Cutler Clark Beams
C : Hanley Aish Rich
HF: Zorko Close Mayes
FF: Green Luey Taylor
R : Martin Redden Rockcliff

IC: Mcstay, Paperone, Merrett
Sub: Adcock

Next in Line: Lester & Robbo and West.

Reasoning:
1) Goose and Merrett combine!
Goose is too good atm. He and Merrett can rotate off the bench extending both of their careers. Merrett back to his best position. Opposition forwards would be monstered.

2) Martin Luey 80/20.
Martin number 1 ruck 80%. Luey is a better forward. Martin remains a huge agile body in the Centre and is a better handballer, Luey the super tall athletic FF. Playing forwad may extend Luey's time off the injury list. Lions have the best ruck combo in the competition.

3) Mayes back to his best position playing forward and up and down the wing. Can rotate with Paps off the bench.

4) Super Sub
Give the captaincy to Rockcliff. Jed becomes the timate super sub. Mature hard body with good dash and experiance. Could make a real impact.

5) Mcstay off the bench provides us with versatility.

6) Elite Midfield. With Close, Luey Paps and Mayes getting their bullets. ... and when they miss... The mozzie squad mop up

I am a bit ashamed by my thinking on this subject, but I'd like ash McGrath to retire this year and free up a spot for another young developing player on our list. With that being said he is still a handy player and maybe it'd be a good idea to keep him playing in 2015 until we have a young player that is ready to step right into the team. I wouldn't be that affected if Merret retired out of nowhere either. Maguire on the other hand, he's been great. Need him to stick around.

Merrett is just having a poor year. But in saying that he is probably behind Goose and Clarke as the two KPD and if we were pushing for finals he would be taking Gardiners spot IMO. He is not a forward but he is all we have that can provide a contest. If we draft Wright or Freeman develops over the preseason he won't be best 22.

Maguire has been extremely injury prone over the course of his career.
I wouldn't be putting many eggs in that basket. Great if he can keep it up, but don't count on it.

Funny that a lot of people on this forum thought Martin was gone for sure at the end of the year & now he's the leagues best ruckman and we have too many rucks. Short memories it seems.

Woah woah woah, I enjoy watching Martin but let's not go overboard! His handballing is better than Leuey's and I'd suggest Leuey is a better kick, but come on, elite clearances?? I still worry about some of his possessions if their isn't a clear target to pass to within a short distance.
Did you see Martins kick to Merrett? His clearances are elite had another 8 clearances and 3 centre clearances today. Sorry for the quote but he is that good.

Martin's rucking and clearance work generally has been exceptional, but he's not a particularly great kick. A lot of the time hacking it forward from the centre square is great because forwards will often lead out anyway.

I don't think it is really affecting his ... effectiveness ... but he has his flaws.

In any case - he probably is leading the comp with disposals and taps to advantage or something. An extremely useful player.

Merrett won't be best 22 next season unless he pulls his finger out. Berger comes in for him as the FF.
Next season depending on delistings and potential retirements we will have the youngest team in the comp I would have thought.
We have speed but we still lack a speedy elite user of the football midfielder. Polec would have been the cream :(

Either would I, but unfortunately we have to endure another two more years beyond this one.
Worst post I've read on Lions big footy.
Merrett is our enforcer. He hurts the opposition whether he's playing well or not. We need this in such a young team. He has a t0nne of talent and ability too.

To say we have to endure Merrett is way off and ... well... dumb

Looks like a Merrett-hating clique forming ;)
Don't know if it really a Merrett hating clique or just people waking up to what we need to take us forward, remember Merrrett is the wrong side of 30.

Reasons for Merrett to go:
  1. Martin is now our #1 ruck and its a position he excels in as seen over the last 8 weeks as his clearance work is top class to add to being a solid ruckman. If he'd been in the side since round 1 he'd be AA this year.
  2. With Martin as starting ruckman it means Leuey needs to find another spot or be traded. He has shown his marking skills before and is a 10x better kick than Merrett. So move Leuey to FF and that gives use 3 marking options with McStay & Close.
  3. Defence, do we need Merrett back there? his brain snaps cost us at least 1 goal a game guaranteed. Clarke has come along really well this year and Goose is in good form as well. Get Staker back fit then we have the question of what to do with him as well. All three will be 30 at the start of next season, there are only two positions at best to go around amongst the three of them, so you have to leave out one. Merrett is the worst disposal of the 3, form fluctuates the most of the 3 and most likely to do something stupid costing us a goal of the 3.
If he could learn how to kick properly at goal there would be a spot but he hasn't so far in all the time he's had up forward, so not going to change now.
