Review Round 1, 2021 - Brisbane Lions vs. Sydney

Birchall, Hipwood, Robinson and Sharp all need to be out of the team for next week.

This isn’t just an effort issue. The change in rules has resulted in our last years game plan being totally ineffective. Our game plan was based around kaos entries into forward 50 and letting our quick forwards go to work or at least create stoppages. We would then press up and lock the ball in with repeat forward 50 entries. Our forward 50 entries were always deep and usually approx 10 m either side of point post. Our kicking didn’t need to be precise it just needed to be good enough to achieve game plan.

The world has changed with other teams now doing shallow forward 50 entries and getting easy marks and shot on goals. Also, defending kick ins is so much harder so keepimg teams in there forward 50 is very hard.

I think we will struggle this year,

They outplayed us all over the ground full stop.

We had no system when we did get it after half time ,just kicked and hoped.

I'm not reading anything else into it than that. They were hungry ,we didn't turn up with near enough intensity. We didn't man up as a team when we could've on many occasions.

Some of our superstars had mares.

I'd like to bring Tommy Berry and/or Madden in. They're both goers.

I've been a defender of Birch. He needs to do a lot more in the next couple of games. Sharp isn't ready, we thought we'd get away with it tonight but he got no support.

It's only one game .We know we're a lot better than that , let's turn it around.

On the positive Daniher will be a huge asset. McCarthy is as honest as the day is long , Neale kept trying to make something happen.

Hippy and Andrews had shockers . I'm really sorry we let Stef go.

I don't know whether we'd been on the turps all week but the way our M/F and forwards just let them pinpoint licks into their forward half without any real pressure was embarrassing if we think we're a top side.

After tonight, I don't think it is too unreasonable, with or without an attitude adjustment, that it is highly feasible that the best we can hope for after 4 rounds is to be 1 and 3, with 0 and 4 a distinct possibility. I don't think we're any chance against Geelong and Footscray, with both games up the bush.

Swans nailed it tonight. Apart from the first few minutes where Bailey was putting on a show they dominated us. We never held momentum for more than 5 minutes at a time. Our centre group looked like they were playing together for the first time. Another loss or 2 like that and we’ll be trying to stay in the top 8.

I would have thought the first half against the suns two weeks ago was the wake up call we needed.

Sydney beat us fairly easily first round (in Perth) in 2018, we ended up winning the flag come end of season, no way in hell should anyone write you off tonight, just after one round, sometimes its the way it goes, you play a bad game first week, looking forward to how you respond in the coming weeks.

Our tackling was well down especially considering they had most of the ball . We couldn't seem to get close enough to stick tackles.

It was a bit frightening how good some of their youngsters looked.

It's Sharps first ever game cut the kid some slack, agree with birchall he is finished and robbo need kick up the arse. You also forgot to mention cameron berry Fullarton and many others.

Any gameplan we execute isn't gonna work if Neale, Clugg, Berry and Zorko are playing like that. Guess Zorko was okay but he had a lot of stupid drama unbefitting a captain. Regardless, there is no winning game plan on Earth that accounts for your prime midfielders performing terribly.

Every time we bring that attitude to a game we will be beaten. Some players appeared to have been reading their own press.
Sydney won because they were prepared to work harder than us and then executed really well. Some players with big reputations need to have a good look in the mirror this week. It never just happens, you have to make it happen.

We had an off night but Sydney played particularly well. If they can keep that intensity up through the season then they'll be a massive improvement on 2020, so I'll be watching them closely now.

I have to say though I'm going to take a while to warm to this season. The rule change about the man on the mark thing is actually frustrating me more than anything when I see the kicker just wheel around and the ump calls play on late. May as well just move the mark another 10m backwards with the amount of advantage that is gained.

Definitely lack some grunt inside , a problem we had twice against Geelong last year.

I don't see where we get any extra from our current list so the guys we have just need to bring their A game as a unit.
