AFLW Round 1 - 2024 AFLW season

Idk about other people's expectations, but mine include Richmond and Collingwood making the 8 if they keep key players on the park. Nothing has happened in a few weeks to change that.

Easy to forget Fremantle beat the Pies and West Coast beat Essendon in last year's practice matches. Neither of those results held up over the course of the season, so a degree of scepticism for pre-season form involving travel to WA is probably natural.

Geelong v Melbourne is the match which has gotten real tricky to tip. For the Dees, losing Purcell could've been absorbed a fair bit if West was still there. Geelong have even less options to cover for a sidelined Scheer, nevertheless they narrowly won that SF last year without her (which started with Amy McDonald being left alone inside F50 twice for two goals).

Eagles best hope of real improvement especially first month is probably due to the fact a lot of their better players are still really young, and have lots of improvement in them.
Unfortunately for the younger Eagles I think it will be hard to get a proper read on them with their brutal fixture to open the season. Hard enough for an average aged team but three 4-day breaks in a row is going to give us at least one big blow out i think. Probably on their return home against the Lions after their road trip.

No Davey for the Pies, as feared, probably means they try to go ultra stacks-on clogball style which could work at North Sydney for at least a while.

Swanson and Sheerin out for the Eagles and Tigers respectively. You would think West Coast are less capable of covering their loss, but it's still a top 10 Metres Gained player Richmond will have to do without on a pretty big ground.

two-time Best & Fairest Georgia Patrikios will miss at least the next eight weeks with a foot injury.

Going to make the season alot harder, that's 8 minimum and the season is only 10 weeks long, we just cant have nice things

She looked as checked out in the pre-season as I've ever seen her, despite a gradual progression over the past 2 years suggesting 2024 might provide a return to B&F form. So I tend to think St Kilda's finals chances were always going to rely more on other players stepping up anyway.

If Smith lifts from something like 14 to 18 touches per game and Richards 7 to 12, the Saints will improve on last year even without Patrikios' 17, such is the difference in footy IQ.

TOTALS

Geelong 10-0 Melbourne
Hawthorn 8-2 Carlton
If the results of these matches end up accurately reflecting the lopsided tips, that would be a disastrous start to the season for Melbourne and Carlton. A what-is-the-coach-doing kind of start. At the very worst, these should be close losses.

Looks like the Blues are at full strength, so really no excuse to not get the job done imo.

WESTERN BULLDOGS VS PORT ADELAIDE
NAB AFLW MATCH TO MOVE TO THE MCG
AFLW / AFL FRIDAY NIGHT DOUBLE HEADER

The AFL has today moved the Week 2, Western Bulldogs vs Port Adelaide NAB AFLW match from the Whitten Oval to the MCG.

The match remains on Friday September 6 and will begin at 4:30pm AEST (previously 5:05pm AEST), in what will now become a double header at the MCG with the AFL Elimination Final between the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn to follow. The start time for the final remains unchanged at 7:40pm AEST.

Anyone with a ticket to the sold-out AFL Elimination final will have the ability to get to the MCG early to watch the NAB AFLW match if they choose. Gates will open at 4:00pm.

Fans who had purchased tickets to the NAB AFLW match at Whitten Oval will now receive a ticket to the MCG for both games at no additional cost, thanks to the competition’s major partner NAB. Ticket holders will be contacted directly by the ticketing agent.

Additionally, NAB have also arranged for a number of tickets to be made available to the two competing club W members to attend the double header, with these tickets to be allocated by the clubs.

The Friday night MCG event is sold out to the general public with a crowd of 90,000 expected on the night.

The AFL thanked the multitude of stakeholders involved in making this happen, including the Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, the MCG, league partners Toyota and NAB and broadcast partners Foxtel and Channel 7.

“The next month of footy is the best of the year, with the start of the NAB AFLW Season and the Toyota AFL Finals Series.” AFL EGM Football Laura Kane said.

“We were presented with a unique set of circumstances, and following discussions with the Bulldogs, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, the MCG and our broadcast partners, there was universal alignment on trying to maximise the AFLW crowd considering the Western Bulldogs involvement in both matches.

“We encourage anyone with a ticket to the MCG on Friday next week to get to the ground early and enjoy what will be a great AFLW matchup between the Bulldogs and the Power.

“On behalf of everyone at the AFL, I want to thank everyone involved in making this happen so quickly, especially to our AFLW major partner NAB for supporting us every step of the way, as they have done so for many, many years.”

The NAB AFLW match will be broadcast on Foxtel / Kayo, while the AFL Elimination Final will be broadcast on the Seven Network.

All four matches for Week One of the 2024 Toyota AFL Finals Series are sold out. Any further ticket releases will be communicated in the lead up to each match.

Wonder how 'sold out' it actually was then, or where these extra seats have come from. Does the AFL keep some seating in reserve for packages or corporates or something?

Noting crowds at Whitten Oval ranged between 2,100 to 3,000 across 4 games last year, so that's a fair few if a similar capacity wanted to attend.

One of the anomalies from Sydney's season last year was the 3-4 record with Morphett (including losses to Carlton and Hawthorn) and the 4-1 record without her. Something to track this year.

Collingwood might need a Traubian performance from Sabrina Frederick to have any shot tonight. But in any case it's a bit of a free hit for the Pies, and the likes of Schleicher and Bonnici just need to get through unscathed and build in time to hit their stride for that mid-season run vs WCE, WB, GC, Rich and PA.

Moths are to NSO as seagulls are to the MCG, I guess.

Strangely conservative start from Sydney, lots of kicks toward the boundary on a 90m-wide ground doesn't make much sense for a self-proclaimed attack-first team.

Pies could've already just about buried the Swans who will make a few easy changes in the 2nd half and run away with it if this one sticks to the script.

But should be very interesting if Collingwood clean up their shots on goal.

What’s happening Teen ?
Score graphics and clock haven't been working properly all night. They've messed up a bunch of instant replays too.
