Funny to think that it wasn't that long ago that we still had specialist lead and mark full forwards who were 185cm and under like Ben Dixon and Mark Williams.

That type of player basically doesn't exist anymore? Now it's all six foot six power forwards and ultra quick small forwards.

That "mid sized" marking forward has basically all but died out across the league from what I can see.
Gunston and Mihocek are the ‘mid-sized’ forwards these days…

The Wizard as our 3rd tall forward is bringing it back!

Everyone is a bit taller these days but Bayley Fritsch is a good current example of a successful mid sized marking forward.

That's Jamie Elliot's style
And Miochek to a degree.

So Collingwood rate it.

Can't think of any others.

At a pinch:

Rohan - 189cm
J. Stephenson - 189
Fritsch - 188
Membrey - 188
Melksham - 186
Sexton - 186

Not many

From the names listed you find a good one they still go a fair way to contributing to a premiership. These guys are the absolute cream. Jack Gunston another.

I assume that’s the route that Dimma (183) will be playing. Obviously Gunston (193) too. On average we’ll be mid 80s :)

Yes that is true.

But definitely not as many mid sized lead and mark forwards as there used to be.

Going even further back than Dixon and Williams we had Paul Hudson, Tony Hall, etc.

I still think there is a place for this type of player though, someone who can play second fiddle to the big boys up forward and bob up every now and again with a five goal bag (Willow was good at that).

I think the big thing is the way defence has gone really limits these types of players.

Teams are a lot better at guarding space so there’s a lot less pockets of space to lead into.

Not to say you can’t do it in todays game it’s just a lot more difficult especially when you have to rely on a fast break up the field to have that space otherwise the defence collapses in and forwards have to have another way to kick goals.

Toby is a freak who can pretty much play anywhere but I'll give you that one as he does play mostly as a mid sized forward.

Still it's not a big list if the only really decent ones you could count on one hand (Greene, Fristch, Elliot). As previous poster said the way sides flood backlines these days makes finding space for a lead mark forward very difficult.

Valuable players to have though if you get a good one.
