Reminds me of when Alan Richardson took over St.Kilda everyone tipped them to win the spoon but the players gave the middle finger to the doubters and surprised by winning a few games.

That's how I see Essendon this year.
They can put all the metaphorical middle fingers up all they want, it's not going to magically give guys more talent than they have or the team have more chemistry with a dozen guys just thrown in and expected to gel.

Essendon are missing a lot but need to factor in Gold Coast will be missing both omeara and d.swallow whilst Prestia and Ablett have had restricted pre-seasons meaning they come in under done if they play. I'd expect to lose but it's not impossible to see an upset.

Hey Guys,

I'm heading to this game hopefully to see my cousin Sam Grimley play his 4th game of AFL footy.

Just wanted to hear your opinions on whether he is a lock for your best 22. I am very critical on his game, whilst he is athletic and can leap for a good mark, I feel the defensive side of his game (chasing, stalking, tackling) is very poor and needs to improve dramatically.

Cheers
Jesus, I hope you are not expecting your cousin to put you up for the night

And we will be pretty much at full side minus Polkinhorne who might become a permanent 22 as the season progresses.

People seem to be basing their assumptions on how we will go on every side always being at full strength and that last season we had a full side in career best form, when only Stants, Hooker, Hurls, Hep and Colyer actually had strong seasons.

Well Colyer missed a fair chunk injured as well last year.

Need to grab a win or 2 early. Fear as year goes on we will wear alot easier than others and thats when we will be at our worst.
This is my biggest issue. Not sure where resilience will come from and suspect there will be a lot of finger pointing and shifting of blame while fat pay packets are collected.

Yep, if we can beat either the Suns or Melbourne or both, should hold us in good stead but if we get beaten by them then play Port in Adelaide then Geelong, the season can head downhill very quickly.

What an underwhelming build up to round 1. Hardly excited for the opening round.

I think we might catch Melbourne off guard. Would've said GC if the game was in Melbourne as well. Otherwise, round 6 is our first realistic chance of winning

I don't see Grimley playing after the first few rounds - Think once Grima develops fitness he can play defence which frees up Brown to play forward - I much prefer Brown, JD and MCkernan as the tall forwards.

I can see why Grimley didn't crack the Hawks side but he has been solid enough to play most weeks, Brown hasn't done a great deal yet although I do see him more as a forward but considering the holes down back he might be played more there thought out the season. Grimley is a big tall forward that oppositions will need to man up on or he can kick 3 or 4, I don't recall Brown ever being that kind of player and he frees up Joey to roam around the half forward line.

It's funny that it's assumed or used an excuse that we can't have 12 new players not know each other and be able to form any chemistry after only 2 months training.

Seems to work ok when 30 people who dont know each other join a rep team or origin team and train 3 times before a game. You saying more skill requires less chemistry?

Or have we just parked the chemistry excuse out there as a lazy cop out incase it turns to shit

They are also playing against other rep teams who haven't had a lot of time playing together. Even then the rep teams who have played together a few times more often do better than new combinations.

Agreed it's up to Grimley to make himself undroppable with good form.

Another vanquished Philly fan checking in here...

Anyway, let's get back to the game.

So, how off the pace will Ablett be considering his delayed pre-season?

I'm thinking not very. Quality players tend to have very good first games back, then struggle more in their second game.

I reckon Ablett will rest deep forward and possibly spend decent amounts of time there while regaining match fitness, and that spells all sorts of danger for any side I reckon.

Wonder if Crowley is set for him.
Like I said on the podcast, even if Crowley goes to him he hasn't got the help like he had at Freo. You don't lessen the impact of someone like GAJ on your own.

What are peoples thoughts on Jamar? Will he play this game? He did Ok I thought in the pre season matches even though his stats weren't great;-
2 games ave disposals - 7, marks - 3, tackles - 1.5, goals - 1, hitouts - 16. But he definitely has a presence out there...
Apparently Leaunberger did OK in his first hitout and maybe he comes straight in for this one and shares ruck duties with Mckernan...???
Would also like to see Grima get a run....

Team could look like;-

Grima Brown Baguley
Gwilt Hartley Dea
Goddard Simpkin Kelly
Zakka Daniher Stokes
Langford Leaunberger Cooney

McKernan Crowley Z.Merrett

Bench from: Bird Fantasia Gleeson Tipungwuti

That half forward line looks pretty good!
