Round 1 vs Port Adelaide - Pre-game discussion

Re: Port round 1 - Bring it on!

Was thinking about the road trip but decided to enjoy a few more hours sleep and catch a lunchtime flight.

With it being Easter I'd imagine there'll be a large contingent on Cat fans making the trip over in anticipation of belting Port in consecutive matches.

Is there anyone on here from Adelaide and knows of any supporter group gatherings prior to and after the game? I'd love to have a drink or two with some fellow Cat fans.

I also might make this thread a sticky and leave it there for pre-game discussion and other issues.

Re: Port round 1 - Bring it on!

Shame your mob couldnt get close enough to lick anything except thier own wounds in late September wasnt it champ, felt a bit cheated really.......$190 to get into the "G" and then only have one side turn up......

Only Joking you goose.......it was worth every cent and i would have payed 10 times that amount to watch our boys rub your arrogant faces in the hallowed turf.

Now run along and take a bow !!!!

Meow! (I like to drink milk and lick myself)

Thunder Power... YES... We don't even know, but in all seriousness we dont need a mascott telling us how good we are, we have Choco... "We exist to win Premierships!"

... Yes I am taking the piss!

Our Mascott dosen't even turn up to half of the games! I wonder if they count him and officials in the Attendance figures?

I'm flying over on the Wednesday morning, stayin with a good mate over there who can't stand Port or Crows, used to follow the Roy Boys and is still a diehard SANFL man, has followed Centrals all his life, have been to many a SANFL granny with the bloke, he can't make it to this game cause the Doggies are playing a practice match and he's not missed a game of theirs for 10 years, fair enough I guess!

Have made my way to Footy Park and back various ways over time, public transport to the ground is total shyte, am considering hiring a car but don't particularly want to drive if I can avoid it.. hoping my brother will drive this time as I drove for the NAB cup granny in '06! (melbourne to adelaide btw, not just from the airport!)

Bro is considering wearing his Premiers T-shirt to the match.. personally I think that's like waving a red flag to a bull but meh.. I'll be wearing my guernsey so am expecting to cop similar amounts of crap from the crowd. They're overrated anyway. Mate said to expect 35-40k tops, even considering it's a GF rematch.. their supporters just don't turn out in numbers!

Proposed Round 1 Team

I have watched a couple of games this pre-season including Friday night, and a mate and I were talking through the likely make up for Round 1. Given a fully fit side to choose from apart from Matthew Egan some guys are going to be very unlucky come Round 1. Midfield/Half Back positions all depend on match ups etc but my squad wouldn't change too much from this. Would be interested in some other opinions.

My likely make up for Round 1 + a few comments:

B: Hunt (looked good P.S + has been very hard at it)
Scarlett (Say no more)
Wojcinski (Could play about 6 blokes through here, but Wojack has looked good P.S, is it possible for him to have gotten quicker?)

HB: Mackie (predicting a massive year for this bloke, such a good finisher)
Harley (Going to get some bigger jobs with no Egan)
Milburn (Keeps on keeping on)

C: Kelly (has looked great P.S and expecting a big year from Kel. Keeping Prismall out of the side for mine)
Bartel (Class above. Won't be any hangover for this bloke. Genuine Elite Player now)
Enright (Such a handy player. Will continue to get the job done Brian)

HF: Chapman (Hopefully can play fully fit and get over his groin. If we are to improve at all this year, think this guy will play a big part given his troubles with injury last year)
Mooney (Has looked great P.S. Actually expecting some big bags from Moon's this year. 8 - 10's from this bloke aren't out of the question particularly against the strugglers)
S.Johnson (At his brilliant best P.S. Has even more confidence to do the extraordinary. If fully fit could kick 60+ and will be regarded in the top 5 in the comp)

F:Stokes (Massive year last year and will continue to get the job done Brian)
Hawkins (Done some decent things in the P.S but I still think we are still some time away. Would love to have Nath there with him but will be a good learning year for him)
Gamble (Great P.S. Looks to be the big improver. Good overhead and will add another dimension for us this year)

R: Ottens (So important)
Ling (Will keep on keeping on)
G.Ablett (Will consolidate his position in the top 3 in the comp this year and will again press for Charlie)

I: Selwood (What a luxury to have this bloke on the bench)
J.Corey (See Above. All Australian on the bench???)
M.Rooke (Like Chappy if we get a fully fit Max this year we will improve. So tough and can be a second tagger alongside Ling or go back if we need)
Blake (Massive for year for this bloke, alot of faith has been shown.)

So with all of this said, I still can't find a space for Prismall. Without injury I just can't workout how he breaks into our midfield. I really believe he is playing for the same spot as James Kelly and he has been flying and is looking set for a big year. Kel's final series was epic. So think it is going to be a hard slog for Prissa barring any injuries.

Taylor has showed some promise in the P.S and will be used when the match up is required. But again with the names we have available who do you leave out to fit him in that team?

West has also showed some promise PS and will keep the pressure on Blake.

At the start of the pre-season I was a bit sceptical about how we would go this year. Whilst the opponents we have played in the P.S are no real indicator our style of play still looks insatiable. The players are chock full of confidence, and some blokes now have a real swagger i.e SJ, Lil Gaz, Bartel etc. Their self belief looks amazing, and you get the feeling they hate losing now.

When you sit back and say why will Geelong be any worse this year? The only thing I can think of is injuries. If we lose Ottens, Mooney or Scarlo at any stage this year it will hurt against the good sides. As good as Bartel, Ablett etc are; midfielders are a dime a dozen and our rotations are amazing (refer to Selwood and Corey on the bench).

The second tall forward and second ruck spots could pose some problems if Ottens and Mooney have down years, but if both those blokes have the same sort of output shouldn't be a big problem for us.

Can't wait for Round 1. Bring it on. It is so enjoyable watching this side play footy.

Re: Proposed Round 1 Team

For me:

Kelly - Hawkins - Stokes
Chapman - Moons - SJ
Woja - Bartel - Corey
Mackie - Taylor - Enright
Milburn - Scarlett - Harley
Ottens - Ablett - Ling
Selwood - Blake - Gamble - Rooke

Bloody Unlucky - Prissa and Hunt

Re: Proposed Round 1 Team

The selection of the round 1 team is an unbelievably good dilema.

Prismal will be very stiff to miss out. If he gets a crack in our midfield he could easily have a year like selwood last year. I think he could easily rack up 20 possessions a game.

Gamble from what I've seen and heard is a very exciting prospect. I didn't think it was possible for our forward line to get better with Chapman, SJ, Stokes kicking bags!

People have been saying our depth isn't as strong as last year, and I know we have lost some players, but I feel we have plenty of players to back us up. Especially with H.Taylor who looks a ready made player. Our tall forwards are maybe lacking a bit, and I'm not sure how good Longergan is, as a replacement if Hawkins were to get injured or drop in form.

We have so many good midfielders and small forwards.

I agree with your round 1 team. I wonder if Prismal will get a gig, but looking at the team, it is a struggle to see how he will fit in.

Re: Proposed Round 1 Team

Both good sides, and will be pretty much close to spot on.

Does anyone think that Blakes spot in the side is under pressure from West for round one? I'd not be surprised if West has overtaken Blake by seasons end as the number two ruck in the side.

The Premiers T-Shirt and Scarf will be for the pre-match stroll.

For the actual game I will wear the GFC guernsey...with 119 on the back!! :D I'm going to make sure they remember that margin.

I encourage everyone to put 119 on the back of their footy jumpers (even if it's just with black electrical tape) if you intend to wear one, really rub it in!

Wow, according to the teams that you guys have been selecting, Prismall would have to be the unluckiest guy in the AFL heading into round 1.

He's been in the best every week during pre-season (i think a B.O.G in there somewhere), and you guys still don't think he'll make it in?

Our starting midfield consists of 4 AA, making it extremely hard for him. Our second rotations consists of Chapman, Stokes, Kelly and Selwood.
See why?

No Max Rooke?
As impressive as Harry has been, Maxy has to get the nod over him...

I left Rookie out purely on a fitness basis. He's missed the last 2 games with a niggle and therefore won't be risked. Taylor has been included as a backup tall in the backline and his form has been good so far. Will be a toss up between him and Lonners.

They've indicated that his injury isn't serious.
Perhaps they're resting him so he's right for round 1...
