My opinion:

- I thought this was a great game. Really sizzling, electrifying football.
- Adelaide Oval is an awesome venue.
- Port are a threat for the flag, though how serious I'm not sure. Still not totally convinced.
- I was majorly impressed with the effort of our undermanned side.
- Felt like punching the commentators, who spent 95% of the evening blowing hot air up PA's butt, and almost willing them over the line. With seven minutes to go, it was as if they had got out the beers and the PA scarves.

Players who caught my eye:

- Duryea. Just loved the way he went about it last night. He is gutsy, tough and smart. The bump on Mitchell was spectacular - who ever said the bump was dead? He hardly even blinked.
- Lewis. Had a blinder. Brought us back into the game.
- Burgoyne, as always, almost snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
- Suckling. Has had his detractors, but did a solid job.
- Ceglar. Just felt like the centre contests improved when he came on. I feel McEvoy is an awkward ruckman...
- Stratton. Performed some amazing defensive acts.
- Langford. Has only played a handful of games at AFL level, and it's like he's been there forever. What a gun! Can only get better.

Woeful:
- Hodge. Seriously, he stuffed up too many times, in crucial situations and cost us goals. We had a sniff in the last few minutes, and his forward 50 kick was crap. I left the pub after that piece of shite. So much for his vaunted "leadership" skills.

This is my match review from the loss against Port Adelaide.

There were definitely some positives - Jordan Lewis and some of the younger players acquitting themselves well. I also thought that Port Adelaide seem to be executing a game plan that will cause an evolution in tactics.

Check out the review and let me know what you think!

True. They were playing like us - attacking footy. That's why it was such a great game to watch.

Great game guys, footy was the real winner:thumbsu:

Really like to hear what Hawk supporters thought of their Adelaide Oval experience.

You realise you won the free kick count comfortably?
Sorry but the free kick count argument is God Awful. Monfres needs someone to disembowl him and a lot of Port players were on a 360 tackle ride in the first half plus you guys through the ball with intent yet always called play on. You guys deserve to win and Hawks would have pinched it but don't start with the frigginfree kick count. I counted five bullshit frees in the last 10 minutes to Hawthorn that had no effect on the result at all. Take your win with dignity and along with Geelong you guys are the ones to beat. Hawks are at best middle of the road team. No need to be scared from us anymore. Well done.

You guys are good, real good. Not breaking news obviously, but fact. We are probably 1-2 seasons away of a real improvement away from matching you when it comes to finals especially, but from where we have come from (remember it was only a couple of season ago you smacked us by a million points), it is nothing short of miraculous that we can be confident of competing against you. Fully expect you to be there at the pointy end again, and I have the feeling whoever wins it this season will have to beat you to do it.

My first Adelaide Oval experience was really really good one. It looked fantastic, the seats were spacious and comfortable, the ambient temperature a balmy 22degrees, and it put on a wonderful game of footy for its spectators. The atmosphere was a bit dull, however.
Did I mention I was watching it on telly from the comfort of the lounge-room?

For me things improved when Big Boy went off the ground. I am not convinced he is best 22. His ruckwork is POOR. Really struggles to touch the ball regularly in the centre square which is not good enough at the top level. Hale is our best ruck and Cegs holds his own better than Big Boy in terms of getting first touch. Big boy should not be an automatic inclusion and should get games on form only.

I think you need to ascertain when he sustained his injury. I think it was fairly early. Was under quite a bit of duress before he was subed of.

It's getting really frustrating with the HTB rule, or rather how little it gets paid for deserving tackles. The "knocked loose" argument is crap. Either you dispose of the thing, or you get pinged if you had prior.

The "knocked loose" thing is fine for when the player hasn't had prior - and providing it actually was knocked loose and they didn't just drop it which tends to be the case. Outside of that I'm with you, it's bloody frustrating and needs to be paid more. Laying a good tackle takes a lot of energy and takes the tackler out of the play. It's frustrating when a good tackle is laid, the ball is "knocked loose" (read: dropped) and then an opposition player comes by and scoops it up uncontested and plays on while the player who has made the tackle is on the ground wondering where the whistle was.

Adelaide Oval is a great ground. If you get a chance, come over for the game vs. Adelaide, you won't regret it.

Few things that stood out to me:
  • Schoey is not a defender. Deer in the headlights the whole game. If the delivery was better to Schultz, he would have been carved up. Cost us 4 goals from nervous errors. They weren't just errors, they were bad errors. Not the first time he has done this too. It's mind ****s me why he plays there when he's never looked overly comfortable. He's a natural forward playing back, meanwhile Rough is a natural defender playing forward.
  • John Barker was coaching our forwardline again. They refused to lead for a majority of the game despite the open F50. Gunston is not built to wrestle and take contested marks, but for some reason, he just didn't lead. Hale, Bruest and Cegs all the same.
  • Lewis was phenomenal.
  • I think Echols said it and I agree, Hodge tried too hard. Tried to create plays that weren't there and it cost us some goals. K.I.S.S.
  • 3 ruckman and 2 underdone mids didn't work. Forward line looked dysfunctional with 2 rucks in there combined with the above point. Once McEvoy went off, it opened us up to more run, more ball and a more open forward line.
  • I'm more than content a 14 point loss in Adelaide against a full strength Port on their deck considering we were missing our bookends, AA CHB and all the other key players. No other side would have got within 40 with a similar injury list.

Was my first game at AO this season and went with a mixed bag of friends (Pies fans, port fans, hawks fans) and the atmosphere was awesome on the hill! Lots of friendly banter from both sides and everyone in pretty good spirits for a great game. Will hopefully be back for the Crows game to see a better result

Guys how good is Langford going to be?! The only positive to all these injuries is getting time into our next generation of midfielders and we have a gem here. Think we have something to work with in Hallahan too. Disappointed we didn't get the Win, but considering the missing talent I thought the boys were awesome overall.
Thought the selection of Ceglar, McEvoy and Hale was poor, but it ended up working out when Big Boy went down (still not sure how bad it was?). Am assuming it was done so that Hale could stay forward all game, but that didn't work too well and thought he was pretty down. Thankfully Rough is back next week so should release Hale around the ground more where is better suited I think.

Sewell needs some more weeks to get run in the legs and readjust to the speed of the game, but I really hope he improves. Definitely not writing him off as hes a champ, but I think his time in the 1's is coming to an end soon

One thing on mcevoy. He copped the knock really early in the game iirc, and tried to push on. I think that has a lot to do with his effectiveness.
I am not sold on him this year, but we haven't really had him fit and firing.

You surprise me. I have only seen Woodward at training but I have seen a fair bit of Hallahan and I would swear Alex was much quicker.
However, as I haven't seen Woodward play a match this year I won't argue the point at this time.
When under no fatigue they are ok. But they do start to go backwards in the second half. Mitchell and Lewis would be of similar pace, but they can go at that pace for 4 quarters, because they have been in the system for 10 plus years. Not to mention a player like Mitchell is so smart that he cuts out a lot of needless run that a young player wouldn't.

Disappointing result (honourable losses just don't cut it) but not panic stations.

I must say I was pressed by AO & the atmosphere PA created. Cocky, arrogant, like they owned the ground & expected the 4pts. Definitely a nice home ground advantage they are building up there. Not saying they are as good as Geelong but they are extremely quick & skilful. If they 4 quarters & continue the Cattery like atmosphere they could be a genuine contender (would want to have a few good wins at the G though.

Thought that Port jumping us early pretty much cost us the game. It was mainly through the midfield and clearances. Thought we actually did well to hold them out to a reasonable score with a superior game plan by locking them down in defence for long periods. Wasted too many inside 50s in the second term once we got going and made too many costly mistakes in the second half. Every time we got close someone seemed to have a brain fade causing a costly turnover. Full credit to Port because they outsmarted us with their bulk and strength down back and they took the game on. They played some very risky play on football to match it with us and it paid off. We did have several blokes like Lewis, Gunston, Breust and Burger stand up but didn't bring the 4 points home. This was my concern with the Sydney game as well - we just didn't have someone to get us over the line. It was a very winnable game.

I hope Clarko grabs Roughy during the week and says you cost us on the weekend, in saying that I reckon we would have been better going with O'Brien than a third ruck, our forward line looked all at sea apart from Gunston and Bruest.

The umpires panicked early - Port got the rub cos they were the ones making the play. It was more than evened up later on...
I was there :( and we were clearly robbed in the first half. Port got away to a flyer with a combination of poor disposal by us and poor umpiring, especially in their forward half and 50. What followed were two standards for HTB: ball up or play on, if they had it, free to them if we had it. Westhoff got away with two frees in 10 seconds: HTB then deliberate OOB. At the end they overcorrected the frees but in junk time and in non-dangerous positions. However no way did we lose on umpiring. We lost too many clearances, until McEvoy went off and Lewis stepped up. We turned it over too easily (Hodge, Shoe, Suckling, Stratts, Birchall) and weren't clean enough.

Make no mistake, Port are the real deal. They deserved to win and deserve top spot.
