Exhibit A when AJ was one out with his opponent and Markovs kick missed the target and sailed over AJs head… and then took a bad bounce. It ended up in a Markov goal, but all BT could point out was AJ not trying hard enough. Couldn’t have tried and harder to get into position.

It was Markovs crap kick that resulted in the Markov goal! A decent Markov kick would have resulted in a Johnson goal.
While he lacked sticky hands and the kick wasn’t always on target Johnson’s attack on the contest was much improved this week.

What hurt a lot was Jones holding & peeling off Markov to be third man up uncontested

I didn’t get why they stopped play to line up a pies player with the mark inside defensive 50. Just call play on and be done with it.
That's it. Call play on when a player doesn't go back behind his mark or as soon as he takes a step forward when not in line with the mark. A player having to stand still while the bloke with the ball runs past him before the umpire calls play on is ridiculous.

I can see why they picked him over Krueger. He nearly provided that outlet on the wing that we were lacking without WHE and Checkers. They just weren't quite sticking. And it's not a role that Krueger really does.

In hindsight should have picked both and left Dean out. Frampton was pretty useless as a ruck forward and weakened our defence.

The umpire boss went on and on about players not in the contest moving into the mark and back outside 50. That they’ve sent a memo on that being a 50.

All well and good, but as you say our players were simply moving back. They didn’t move into the area first.
The constant back and forth between coaching groups developing ways to win within the rules (for example Malthhouse exploiting interchange or McRae eating time in close games) and rule changes from AFL is ridiculous.

Where does it end?

Fly said it best last night as to why we stopped in the last quarter and the Dogs got on top of us. The Dogs dominated clearances and won the territory battle.

First three quarters were very good with the first quarter being outstanding. The only annoyance is it didn't translate on the scoreboard kicking 5.7.37 at Quarter Time when we could have been 9.3.57 or 10.2.62 and the Dogs might have been out of reach from catching us.

Think we had too many in the end as a consequence of our outs that couldn't get us over the line. Too much was left to too few, namely the Daicos boys and Crisp to will us over the line. Once the Dogs put some work into nullifying Nick, it allowed the likes of Bontempelli to run amok in the final quarter.

I know a loss is bitterly disappointing, but it's our first loss in over two months so some credit needs to go to the team for getting us back on track the season after losing our first three games. Obviously still a lot of work to be done, but at least we give ourselves a fighting chance to potentially be a significant player at seasons end.

Good news is there were no injuries to report and hopefully we get some players back for King's Birthday.

AJ is a great tall third forward. Sticky hands and a beautiful kick for goal and field kick.
How many times has he played with McStay and Mihocek? Not many if at all.

The problem being Cox offers more with his rucking and being a target down the line than Johnson does

I actually like what is happening this year - but not the injuries - as we are in a position that we have to play the next ready players (not in the best 22) and we can see if they fit the style of play that the Pies want to play.

Do I like the losses - no - but we can see who can fit into the top playing group and conversely the ones that won't.

I like the looks of 3 of the new ones HH, Sullivan and Richards as they fit right in and play the style that the coaches want the Pies to play.

Yes - we have to take losses - but we are getting an opportunity to see these guys at AFL level and not watch them at VFL level and try to gauge how they would go.

Richards has the poise and awareness that allows him to take the correct option.

We will see later in the season if Long can be added to that group as well.

I think Eyre will be played as a KPB and would not be surprised if Begg is now trained (after the recovery) as a KPB as well.

He's not a great anything (except banana kick from decent range). Third talls need either a ground level game or to be able to ruck.

First loss in 9 matches with a depleted side at Marvel against a side fighting to be in the 8 ..

It's the last half of the last qtr which has been our downfall the past couple of weeks. Inexperience would have a lot to do with that.

Can't wait to get some experienced heads back in the next few weeks & players back in their rightful positions.

Wilba, Reef & Krueger in for Monday.

Just a thought, but if sides currently are running out the front of stoppages in the last 15 minutes because our defensive mid (Crisp, Sullivan) is cooked and Pendles and Mitchell are missing....MIGHT it be an idea to have a large running player (Bruz or McCreery) trained up specifically for that last 15 minutes?

We were able to contain Bont by winning clearances ourselves for most of the night but when the main mids (Cameron, Daics and Crisp) tired....then Bont got off the leash.

With how we played Markov I would have gone Johnson and Kreuger. Reckon that would have helped Johnson

Unless the game as a whole is becoming ugly it should be on the opposition coaches to counter instead of the AFL.

I think pies are being umpired differently. Nick Daicos has his own rule book and only has to breathe for a free kick. Can even get a blatant HTB not paid infront of goals that has all neutral supporters up in arms. Umps absolutely railed rallied the dogs last night.
Nearly got there ..you mis-spelt one word. It’s ok, I’ve corrected it.

As a general comment, why do people believe our last quarters in the last month have been so poor? Earlier in the season it was our third quarters.

Is it the younger Vfl players cannot play that tempo for a full match?

Is it our game style being too taxing?

Are the opposition fitter?

Is it our game style in terms of tactics?

I think our less experienced types can't run out the full game, and our veterans are probably doing extra yards covering for them

All of the above and opposition coaches are probably concentrating on shutting us completely down in the last half of the 4th qtr, because they know how good we've been in those moments to hang on.

We have suffered game ending injuries in each of the past 4-5 weeks. With a newbie being added each game there is going to be a tipping point whereby our runners stop each game until our youngsters can build game endurance. If we had kicked the easy missed chances last week and last night it would have been enough.

I classify Steene as a forward/ruck and Begg as a ruck.

Hope Steene can develop in the manner of Cox, but he's no Cloke (so far). :)

Can Iliro play forward?

If so, can he play the next round?

😱

Yeah I read “AJ is a great…” and my head just about exploded.

Too few mids. They've been magnificent early in games but are getting worn down, outworked and beaten at the end of the games.
