At the start of the year when I looked at the fixture and saw we were playing Fremantle away (and the Eagles at home) I was happy. I thought without Fyfe and Cerra that Fremantle were probably another year away from contending. I was thinking that this would be a slightly tough but very winnable game.

However Fremantle have blown away my expectations and shown that Flagmantle is a real threat. Wins against Geelong in Geelong and Melbourne at the MCG are right up there as some of the most difficult challenges in the comp right now. While they’ve had a couple of down games, its absolutely clear that on their day they can beat anyone.

Fremantle again have the best defence in the comp. Across the board the whole team seems committed to stopping scoring. They are well set up with big and small defenders that can intercept and shut teams down. Pearce is a good shout for an AA berth and I love the run they can generate from Young, Clarke and Acres. Brayshaw is a top 10 mid in the comp with Serong, Brodie (recruit of the year) and a big threat in Darcy. And don’t forget Aish who put on a tagging master class on the weekend to stop Oliver after he had 24 touches in the first half.

Last year

Round 8 – 9 May 2021 Gabba

Brisbane 95 – 71 Fremantle

Rich had monster day here with 31 disposals (28 kicks), 10 marks, rebound and inside 50s galore and 7 score involvements. He was well supported by Lyons and McCluggage while Charlie threatened to rip the game apart with 11 marks and kicked an inaccurate 3.5.

On the other side Mundy and Serong were strong while Fyfe was struggling through the yips. The other major factor that was arising here was big Darcy. He smashed Oscar with 39 hitouts to 15, 17 disposals and a goal. He gave away a bunch of free kicks but started to show that he’s an absolute weapon.

Round 21 – 8 August 2021 Optus Stadium

Fremantle 54 – 118 Brisbane

After losing to Hawthorn the week before, the Lions responded with a big win over Freo. Zorko was massive 34 touches with 10 tackles. Lyons, McCluggage and Rich again racked up the ball. Daniher kicked 4 to lead 6 other multiple goal kickers. Andrews led a short backline missing all of Adams, Payne and Gardiner, and had to hold out against Darcy, Treacy, Meek and Taberner all pushing forward.

The best offence versus the best defence

We are the highest scoring team coming against the miserly defence at their home ground. This is a great challenge for both teams in who can win out here. They have the tall forwards to matchup on our talls, so I wonder if this is another game we will need to rely on Charlie and Linc to win the game. Get the ball in the forward line, don’t let them intercept and bring it to ground will be key. Then let the smalls go to work.

At the other end of the ground it might be similar. Freo have some solid but I wouldn’t say great tall forwards (but I have big concerns over the form of our tall backs). Taberner was subbed out with a back issue so may need replacement. But I think the biggest threat is their small forwards. Shultz, Freddie, Walters and co are dangerous (Switkowski is also quality but suspended). Starc Answerth and Rich are going to have to be switched on. Last week Freo sent Logue forward to do a reverse job on May. Its possible they do so again in sending him forward to stop Adams or Harris. Hopefully Rich keeps up the form from last year as he hurt Fremantle last year

Midfield

Darcy is the big threat to me. Oscar and Fort will need to have big games to shut him down. Then we need to be wary of the great running Freo do. We have a weakness against teams that run and this is another risk to us. Berry and others will need to keep up the form to stop this momentum. And stop them from controlling the ball in the air.

Changes

McCluggage is an automatic best 22. But who goes out for him is tough. The straight change is Dev. Dev played a great game and I agree that we need extra mid support. I hope he isn’t out. Other changes require moving the magnets around. Other options I see could be:

  • Rest Zorko (he looked off)
  • Answerth out (Im not convinced on his form and ball use) and push Ah Chee or Zorko back
  • Ah Chee out to sub (Berry and Prior have been better wingers) McClugg back to the wing
Gardiner I think is in poor form and I think we need to rotate our list better. Lester can do exactly the same job and is in better form. Payne needs game time. I think either should come in for Darcy

Robbo has been sub for two games in a row. I cant see him coming into the best 22 so think he should get some VFL game time. TBerry in for sub unless one of the outs for McCluggage goes to the sub.

Prediction

Absolute danger game. I hope they are down after a massive win away but I feel pessimistic and we might go down by 2 goals.

Big game. We've played 2 games against top 9 teams in the first half of the season and play 6 in the second half as it stands now.

Plenty of challenges coming up

Tag on brayshaw is a must. Berry did a great job on him one year in Perth (potentially last year even though he got 25 touches?).

Have to be physical and force more of a contested game and back our forwards to kick a score. If that means going slow, the it means going slow. We can’t get into a track meet with them.

Will be a top win if they can do it…will maintain our perceived 2nd seed…if not Freo probably takes it off us

The midfield matchups will be interesting. I think Brodie vs Lyons is something both teams would be happy with. Both similar and wont be able to exploit the pace of the other. Neale vs Brayshaw is possible unless either team tries to tag the other. Then Serong and Mundy against McCluggage/Dev/Rayner. Lots that could happen

These are the games that try supporters souls!

Beat up on norf - meh ... grandma could do that

Lose to Cats at Kardinia - yeah what do you expect ... happens to the best of them and doesn't matter anywhere else

Game against a peer contender - those are the ones that show you what you really have and whether you might, finally, have got what it takes to win through finals.

Whether we win or lose (preferably win) the big takeaway will be on how we did it. Rock up expecting to cruise and start playing halfway through the first and the fans will be passing around the long guns and the ammunition as there is no excuse (not that there ever is) for not being mentally prepared for a cage fight from the word go.

Hopefully we are a class above and we, as fans, can enjoy the last quarter with the win in the bag (the players should neither relax nor enjoy and all fat lady gifs are of course banned) but I suspect that it is more likely to be a heart pounding seat leaning forward fingernail biting cliffhanger.

I also hope that we are completely oblivious, both teams' fans, to the presence of the umpires due to their professionalism, invisibility, and unbiased consistent application of the rules and 'rules' of the game

Your on the money here. A win would be great, but the performance away against a contender is more important. If we go down fighting in a contest I will try and remember to walk away happy

I have my doubts that Clug will play. Hammies are usually a three week thing IIRC

Any sports medicine people to comment?

I have no expertise in the field so i'll be happy to give my two cents.

It wasn't a hammy, it was an awareness.

An awareness he just did his hammy.

I'm with you Derrinalphil, he didn't train last Wednesday or Thursday was it? Hard to see him playing this weekend.

I'm fairly certain he will. He couldn't have pushed himself and played last week but obviously there's no point risking talent especially at this time of the year. Fully expect he'll be fine to play

Nice Preview KissKiss

I think we can match them all over the ground if we turn up with the attitude ready to play.

Our stronger, older bodies and wiser heads will get us over the line in a reasonably tight one.

I will reverse your 2 goal loss into a 2 goal win.

No chance against Flagmantle from last week. Still a chance against the Dockers team that lost to the Suns.

Flagmantle have no chance against the Brisbane "if it bleeds we can kill it" Lions but have a chance against the Brislame Lions who lost to the Hawks.

;)

I went to the game in Launceston, he did grab at his hammy when it first happened then the play went on and he seems in two minds, at one stage he runs after the play, then looks to the bench, he really seemed in 2 minds as if to come off or not. Then he comes off. I think 'awareness' was the right description then after the game finishes he gets up off the bench with an ice bag glad wrapped to the leg. Precautionary - maybe.

Cripps did that one-week hammy a few weeks ago to annoy all the Fantasy players, and hasn't seemed encumbered returning from it.

If we pop a couple of tags on to their playmakers , turn up in the right frame of mind and play the game on our terms we'll grind them into the turf.

Quietly confident about this one. Some of our guys who've been a little quiet of recent weeks need this challenge.

No day dreaming , no dropping off , no slack defence , time to get serious ! And this is a final rehearsal

So put away the attitude and go hard

super excited for this one.

dont know how we should shuffle the magnets around with clug likely to return but dev has to stay in..... his two way running was immense alongside berry's on saturday.

if the rumours are true and fyfe is back this round it will be interesting to see how fremantle adapts to fit him in. their onballers all looked excellent on the weekend, but fyfe said his forward experiment was over in the preseason. dont know where he will end up if he does play but youd think freo would want him cherry ripe before his return so another potential threat we will need to keep accountable

missing daniher is a big shame :(

huge month coming up for us, lets get off on the right foot by putting the lid back on flagmantle!

Start praying for rain, it is our only hope.

Brab I need you in the headspace of every game is a must win. I need that energy. We need that energy.

For this week we come up against our biggest challenge yet, the Albany Shantymen.

Boy oh boy BRAB you have been a really BRAB12 pessimist this year. Will be an interesting game but I think our pressure and intensity will show up for this one.

BRAB has broken. Truth be told he hasn't been the same since he and Ant Bear stopped feuding.

Great review kk, my age and inability of current "professional sporting standards" knowledge allows me? to suggest to the boys, WIN and there's enough pre bye bevies on the return flight home to attempt to beat Rod Marsh's London flight tally.

/sarcasm... or is it?/
