Autopsy Round 19, 2023 : Hawks can’t get it done against Tigers

Geez Reeves is a liability. That’s enough for a while. Give Meek a crack. Watched Reeves closely at game and he’s just a statue,
Unable to give any help once the ball is bounced.

That one effort for the ground ball in the last was laughable. He may have been gassed (?), but he could have at least tried to dive and hit it in our direction, instead of lurch and meekly flail an arm in the direction of the ball. Instead the ball gets picked up by a Tiger and they're on their way.

Wingard had easily his best 2 quarters and a minute with us then didn’t touch the ball again. I think that summed up how we played. Absolutely dominated them all game except for the last 2 minutes of the first 3 quarters then just ran out of legs and couldn’t get into the game in the last.

Biggest problem we have is that we don't have leadership against the tide. There is no Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis to put the team on their back when we lose momentum.
I love our young kids coming through and they have high footy IQ but they don't have true leadership. Think we need to look at that closely in the draft.

Leaders like Hodge aren't born they are built. He learned plenty off Vanders and Crawf. We have plenty of young blokes who have the capacity to be strong leaders but it will take time.

37 hitouts and 4 clearances.

The big thing I noticed with the last quarter is that it all fall apart when we tried to play conservatively. We definitely were tiring but at least when we attacked we made the tigers defend.

As soon as we stopped though they were able to set up behind the ball and it only felt like a matter of time before our defence cracked.

It’s part of our development to get better at closing the game down but also continuing to attack. It’s much harder for the opposition to score when it’s in our forward 50.

Stings now but in the long run this loss will do us a world of good.

The only way to learn to win in these situations is to first fail and learn.

Plenty to love about today's game
So……we can’t simply win by doing the right things when required and winning the game?

How ?

If we held on and won it does. That ruins mental toughness.

We are stronger because we choke doesnt make sense.
You can't simulate that kind of pressure in a last qtr, a lot of those young players wouldn't have played in that heat before or very rarely, great learning opportunity for them.

Got his contract extension at half time.

Used to happen all the time against Essendon too. Got closer and closer and then bang - we broke the hoodoo and had a long winning streak (should have been longer - AFL scheduled one game seasons against them for most of it). Richmond are cooked - first game in a long time that they didn’t bully us. Wouldn’t shock me if we finish above them next year.

Disagree. He had that leadership quality from Day 1. Didn't hurt having others like Vanders there. What I'm saying us we don't have anyone even of Vanders leadership there.

We'll pass them like ships in the night next year
Yes we know the Tigers are sliding ala our Hawks after the threepeat era although we had enough out there to beat them today.

Yet we spluttered our way thru the last qtr and gave the win to them due to our inaction and listless efforts in the fwd half that made it a 30 min hold onto you hats job.

No one stood up and made a cool headed decision, all we needed was 1 single goal to win.

This game showed us once again that when the pressure is turned up, we just go to water. Unless this is addressed thru bringing in more talent to the club then the bottom 4-6 clubs in the AFL will be our level for the foreseeable future.

Yes we are young and can improve although when the pressure is applied by other sides, this year we have consistently turned up our toes which is a concerning truth the pollyanna's of this site seem to ignore.

As other have said, we need more leaders than just Sicily...the void is glaring and today's last quarter effort a reflection of that fact.

I am sure Mitchell is well aware of this and has spoken of the growth he has seen in this aspect but supect he know it is still a big weakness in our list.

At this stage of the team's development they play an exciting brand of free wheeling football. Good midfield that can win the ball and slick transition from defence into attack. When the going gets tough in terms of pressure and structures they fall apart. I agree absolutely there is a lack of leadership but there is also a lack of structure and ability to control the play when the going gets tough. The team is all at sea when the opposition puts the screws on.
