Eagles by 30 points.

North are better than we thought.

A close loss on the road against a good team aint that bad.

I wonder if Simmo has thought of putting Ginbey on Green. Got the strength and aerobic capacity to run with him, good tackler, and will be good development for him. If we can shut Green down that's almost the game right there.

It's too easy giving the team a free pass based on how "good" and "actually not that bad" the opposition is each week. I mean we're a cellar dweller, everyone looks good to us.

After the last few basket case seasons we should be rocking up with the utmost intensity to have a crack at whomever, wherever, be it the previous seasons premier or the wooden spoon team.

Losing due to lack of talent is fine, you won't find an actual supporter who'd complain about going down after having a crack.

Losing the contested possessions -37 doesn't imply we had a crack. It implies we phoned it in for half a game and got punished for it.

Exactly, and regardless of how good North are this year, we all saw the first half last week and we were terrible and lacking intent and it wasn’t because North were playing some amazing brand of football. They may have improved, should have improved and may improve more but regardless, we were bloody ordinary first game up after a year to forget (even with reasons for that year).

We should have come out firing and deserve the criticism for not. But it was week one and lets hope we see more this week.

That said, I dont expect much this year other than effort, hopefully a new game plan developing and games into what little quality youth we have. It is going to take years.

You're focusing on one stat.

WCE were 2nd for pressure in round one.

The skills were shit, not the lack of intent.

Yeah fair enough, but not just any old stat, the KEY stat.

The footy is in dispute and there to be won, who wins it? North did 37 more times than us.

Pressure/tackling are nice too, but an intent to actually win a neutral ball ahead of your opposition is still pretty dang important IMO.

Freo played them on home ground and were behind the entire game, made a late fight back and lost by a salivating 1 point...Freo looked pretty ordinary most of the time..aren't Freo arguably a top 8 side?

We won a flag being a relatively uncontested side.

Obviously the game's changed but that stat would be way better if the players didn't fumble/miss tackles half the game. Tidy that up and the contested ball looks way better.

The variation in effort over the past 3 years make it pretty hard to know which Eagles team is going to come out today and make a confident call. I suspect we'll get pretty soundly beat winning the ball on the inside and Hurn, Gov, Barrass will keep us in it. Could see us winning by 2-3 goals or getting beaten by a comfortable margin in the 30-40 point range.

Really all I want to see today is one of our small defenders Cole or Duggan given the challenge of shutting down Tobey Greene and succeeding. Good games from the youngsters would be icing on the cake.

It's going to be exceedingly grim if we can't beat GWS at home without Kelly, Whitfield and Perryman

West Coast by 1 Point

West Coast should be winning this match.

GWS have:
  • 1-7 record at Optus stadium (0-3 vs the Eagles)
  • a day less break coming into the match (7 day break compared to 8 for the Eagles)
  • to back up after a Round 1 match played in torrid conditions (37C and high humidity)
  • Kelly, Whitfield and Perryman missing with injury.

Clearly the critical factor will be for the Eagles to hang in there during the early stage of the match as it can be expected that GWS will tire late.

The two Green(e)s shall likely determine the outcome. West Coast does not have even match-ups really for either of them. Nullifying their impact will put the game in the Eagles' hands.

Question marks remain over how Waterman will be used. Understudy to rucking duties for Williams, the majority of his time on the ground will be in positions other than the ruck. I see one of two options here:
  • He goes forward and the "land of the giants" is resurrected with all of its associated pitfalls
  • He goes to the wing, some of the lessons from last week have been taken on board, and Ginbey plays as an extra through the middle.

Interestingly, GWS appear to be going with a defender in CM.Brown as their substitute rather than another midfielder.

Hewett coming in late off the bench for West Coast could end up having an influential cameo, providing a burst of intent among tiring legs from both sides.

Eagles should be attempting to run GWS into the ground today at every opportunity to exploit any carryover fatigue they are experiencing from last week.

Woke up feeling a lot more optimistic about todays game than I have all week. I think watching dockers lose by a point to North made me feel not so bad about the Eagles 😂
Eagles to lead by 20 at qtr time and never seriously be challenged. A late comeback by gws falls short and we win by 15
