Not enough Dream Team Points

Therefore spud.

Am I doing this right?

On SM-G973F using BigFooty.com mobile app
I'm not suggesting he is a "spud". I AM suggesting he isn't involved sufficiently and for a bloke his size doesn't impose himself on the contest near often enough. Gets himself sorted, could be anything.

And, as I have said before, he seems too big around the upper legs. Not necessarily overweight, just the wrong shape. To my uneducated eye, this factor affects his running ability. We've named him the almost man- close but not yet close enough.

Cam Rayner has barely even touched his capabilities as of yet. He has moments in most matches but he is capable of so so much more. I'd go as far as saying we need him to start hitting his straps if we want to turn into the team we think we are.

That was not what you were suggesting. You were saying his game wasn't worth any praise which is not correct

IMO Cam is still a couple of healthy off seasons from showing his full potential consistently.. 2024 he will still only be 24 years of age and entering his prime years with a good 7+ years in front of him, he will get to play on the new Gabba and maybe even post the Olympics.

What- his thighs are too big?

Say what you like, but Rayner was very impressive yesterday. He was across 9 scoring involvements for our team and kept bobbing up in the middle. He fed Keidean streaming past at least twice or thrice. Limited possessions but big impact yesterday. Good game.

Cam was great, I agree. Didn’t amass a lot but bobbed up and good times and was effective with the ball.

Thank you for clarifying what was on my mind.

Just for your [and perhaps my] benefit, what I thought I was saying was that I thought he was capable of much more. He is making a contribution, but as with many others who are blessed with skills most of us who have played the game will never have, it would be a pity if he left anything behind.

Don't think for 1 minute he is leaving anything behind. If you look at the history of AFL footballers who endure an ACL injury such as Pumba's & Hippy's, they traditionally take a full season to get back into where they left off.... in other words they are set back their injury recovery time + a full season. To his credit (& Hippy's) I believe he is exceeding all expectations for this year and we will see an expedited performance out of the both of them in 2023.

Pretty rare for any player post-ACL to immediately bounce back to their best form. I know Daniel Bradshaw did, but he wouldn't have much company. Timmy Watson (who shares many physical traits with Rayner, come to think of it) was arguably the best player in the league when he went down, yet in his first season back he was so ordinary he was dropped at one stage (I think I'm right on that).

To me Rayner had one of those days that could've gone huge but didn't. He popped up at crucial times, a few score involvements, a few just didn't bounce his way, there was a few running goals where he would've been next in the chain needed to finish off, just didn't happen but there didn't seem any lack of effort on his behalf. I'm wrapped with how he's come along after his ACL injury.

Rayner's shown glimpses of brilliance and overall contributed to the team positively this year.

If everyone just forgot he was No 1 pick he'd be doing fine.

He's actually getting stronger every year. I don't know what his ceiling is but we're still entitled to think he'll be a good player over the next few years.

2 weeks for Cripps

Has let down his club big time

Correct call by the MRO. I was worried they were going to Cotchin it.

You simply can’t allow that sort of reckless action to vulnerable players. Would set a very dangerous precedent.

Interesting how all the gun player suckholes in the media came out defending him.

Cal's a quietly spoken guy who we seem to drop for no reason from time to time so I'm a bit upset this has happened to him at this time of the year.

Deserved every minute of 2 weeks.

Silly question - I noticed for the first time this game that there are small names on the back of the guernseys. Any one know how long they have been there and what the names represent?

Notice the name doesn't appear on Lyons

Randomly selected members for member's round. Lyons probably had to replace his guernsey at some point because the first one got ripped or bloodied or whatever.

Thinking about Sunday's game the real positive was that everyone contributed. Giving votes was hard bar Big O and I suppose Neale. Big O didn't seem to have any opposition but you can only beat who's there and that he did conclusively.

It was a more even performance than we've been used to lately. We were sharing it around ,sometimes to our detriment.

I'm expecting us to get over the top of the Saints which leaves it in our own hands in the last round. We still have to turn up breathing fire this week because they will.

If all Rayner is this season is a high impact role player who ranks elite in goal assists, above average in score assists & 300 metres gained from 15 touches, I think we could do a LOT worse.
If I had to guess he's playing a lot tougher role than he was even a couple months ago. Seems to be around the ball less which results in less of his eye catching moments but if he has the ball within 80m of goal I'm generally pretty confident something good will come of it. Wasn't that long ago people were talking about how good a comeback season he was having.

ve how Matho sticks his tackles. Poor tackling is my biggest pet peeve in footy.

Matho has considerably improved on the strength side of things. He appears to be in peak fitness as well.

This is what excites me pitting him against the likes of Viney, Oliver etc.

Attended the game but have not watched the replay yet
At 3/4 time i made a comment to my daughter
So far so good i just want us to win contested possession in the last.
That will indicate commentment irrespesctive of goals scored by each team
At 3/4 time contested possession was dead even (can't recall the number) which indicated Carlton were putting in a effort but way behind on scoreboard
Contested possession ended up Carlton's way 138 to Lions 137 .
So, only 1 difference in contested possession in the last. So our guys effort was there but Carlton outscored us by 24 points
We kicked 114 points which is the most any team has kicked playing Carlton this year. Freemantle the next best with 97

Very happy with the win just need to knock off the Saints next week. They have their season on the line so it won't be easy
Winning away is always harder. Our record this year is 5 and 5 so need to get on the positive side of the ledger
It was just the bad turnovers. A few clangers by typically reliable players, the occasional lack of pressure act. It added up. The umpires also love to exercise the AFL directive to give the losing team a leg up with ambiguous free kicks.

The way the Ch7 team celebrated the hit of Cal was shit. Same with some of the following media coverage. Though many sensibly called for it to be weeks. Leigh banging on about him going for a spoil, complete nonsense.

It was a hit job. Tucked, chose to bump, off the ground, head high contact, concussion.

He was not executing a pure footballing action, he did not have his arms outreached or eyes on the ball.

I said Robbos bump earlier in the year was a week as was McStays last year.

If that’s not 2 weeks or the tri overturns it, we may as well forgot the whole ‘protecting the head’ thing.

Good call.

It's interesting that those who continually marked down Matho as AFL level seem to have doubled down that he's not what we want and won't last. Ironically as he's gotten better.

The same logic that still brands Keays as not much of a player.

I've got to be honest I never rated Matho for all the reasons that people still say they don't rate him. But there's come a time for me to admit that he really has added energy and a bit of excitement to the team and he's a lot better player than ever I thought he would be. He has one or two moments a game where his raw energy excites the group.

The interesting thing to add is that his inside handballs have improved out of sight and he's doing things I never thought him capable of.

OK ,he'll never be a champ , he's got deficiencies ,but he's worked very hard on the abilities he does have and gives it his all. So kudos to him for sticking at it and adding something to the team.

Suggesting that it's an AFL "directive" to give the losing team a "leg up" is an overreach IMO.

That said, the whole vibe of the competition this season is how "close" it is, so I do think the umps regularly (but subconsciously) tend to even things up if a good old fashion belting is in the offing. Not a good look if a big Melbourne club like Carlton gets totally pantsed by an "Interstate" team.

Exhibit A is the astonishing "non free" after Cal got polaxed by Cripps' crude charge. The fact that Cripps has now been cited by the MRO doesn't alter the fact that their was a sudden (if temporary) shift in momentum in the game as a result.

Exhibit B was the ridiculously technical 50 against Zorko in the last quarter for going over the mark.

Not only had there been several instances during the game of the umpires showing common sense and calling players back a metre or two but their has generally been a lot more tolerance for that type of thing all season.

Now when the big comeback is on , the umpire gets excited and piles on. Instead of keeping a level head as a dramatic momentum shift is unfolding, he becomes a contributor to it

It IS frustrating.
