Round 24
Well the battle for the top four and the top eight has heated up after last weeks results. Newcastle’s loss and South Sydney’s big win puts them on collision course for the round 26 clash. Both have a tough run up to that match, Newcastle having Brisbane and Canterbury and Souths having North Qld and Brisbane. Newcastle drop one or both of these matches and Souths keep winning it lines up nicely. Of course the Bulldogs will also have aspirations, but with a poor for and against and Manly coming up this weekend I don’t think they have what it takes.

Meanwhile, two points separate the 4th placed Cowboys and the 7th placed Wests Tigers. With North Qld in average form and doubts over Thurston’s fitness coming up against the red hot Rabbits, and St George playing terribly, door is definitely ajar for the fast finishing Tigers and Warriors. Wests in particular have a comfortable run home, with Parramatta, the Gold Coast and Cronulla coming up.

Melbourne Storm vs. St George Illawarra – Plenty of rumours around about the mood in the Dragons camp at present, players not getting along etc. Amazing how a side that looked supremely confident in the first half of the season can look so poor at present. Melbourne have been hit by injuries, Cronk out for a couple of weeks, Blair has now dropped from the named side as well which could see Smith to 5/8 and Hinchcliffe starting. Gasnier is out for St George with Brett Morris staying behind due to his partner giving birth. Continual doubts over the fitness of Soward make it a tougher match for them as well. Big crowd expected for this one and it’s pretty hard to tip against Melbourne at present.

South Sydney vs. North Qld – South Sydney are on a roll at present, having demolished Parramatta and Canberra within two weeks. Tougher ask for them against North Qld. What helps them is continual doubts over the match fitness of Thurston and the general fitness of Scott. Without those two playing well the Cows tend to struggle, although Bowen has been in pretty good form. Souths will be desperate for a win to keep the ball rolling, and with a reasonable turn out expected (Souths and North Sydney members free for Luke Stuarts farewell) should be fired up enough to win.

Gold Coast vs. Canberra – Dear god, cripple fight and a half. Gold Coast have no halves left, Canberra is missing Dugan now, both sides in pretty terrible form. Toss of the coin job this one. Home advantage says ****, but really could go either way.

Penrith vs. New Zealand – Penrith will be boosted by the return of Michael Jennings, and the 2000 or so people he handed tickets out to for this match. Otherwise they still have some injury concerns, with Lewis again out. The Warriors have recalled Hohaia and, after a rubbish first half were much improved in the second half in the win over Newcastle. With Penrith’s season over and the Warriors having a lot to play for I’ll tip NZ here.

Roosters vs. Cronulla – Paul Gallen in doubt for the Sharks which makes their task somewhat more difficult. Easts will be on a bit of a high after their excellent performance against the Dragons. Carney and Myles are again missing thanks to internal suspension, whilst Kenny-Dowall has been named but is in doubt with injury, with Tom Symonds a chance of coming into the side. Pearce and Anasta will need to play well, but I think the Roosters are more than capable of winning this game.

Manly vs. Canterbury – Fortress Brookvale has proved to be a graveyard for opposition sides this season, with Manly winning every home game. Manly were poor against Parramatta, winning more through the poor work of the Eels. Canterbury however were fairly unimpressive against Cronulla, with a fortunate call near half time being the difference in the end. Don’t think much of their halves and their forwards aren’t all that great either. Manly and their impressive halves should be good enough to finish the Dogs season for good.

Wests Tigers vs. Parramatta – Parramatta comfortably beat the Tigers last time they faced off. Since then the Tigers have won 5 straight whilst Parra have lost 5. Such is the nature of these clashes. Parramatta have won 15 of 23 clashes, with one of the other matches a draw. So I guess whilst every form guide points towards a pretty comfortable win to the Tigers, who may get Tuqiri back, you can’t rule out Parra in this one.

Newcastle vs. Brisbane – Probably the toughest game to pick of the weekend. I don’t really rate Brisbane that highly, but they’ve been pretty impressive the last two weeks. Newcastle is never an easy venue to play at and Newcastle has been in fairly good form, despite a loss in NZ last week. Brisbane should be good enough to win, they seem to be playing well at present, but Newcastle will be keen to attempt to secure their place in the finals. Brisbane, just.

North Sydney to back up their upset victory over Canterbury with a match against the Cronulla/Melbourne NSW Cup side this weekend at North Sydney Oval. Have been in pretty good form, looking for their third win on the trot. Come on you Bears.

Billy *censored* Slater's 200th tonight as well. I dont like him due to his hear number of dickish actions on the field, but he's really become a high quality player the last three seasons or so (he was good for a while but been a noticeable step up). Can't believe he debuted that long ago thought, remember his early performances where he was quick and talented, but couldnt tackle to save himself, really improved that area of his game.

That famous offside try secured his stardom though

I wondered last week whether Soward's not taking the goal kicks signified that he wasn't fully fit,. or whether it was another of the coach's master plans like not catching the high ball. I mean, Bennie Barba has been dropping the high ball all season (not last week, though), and it hasn't worked for the Dogs. :p

Nice run-in for the Tigers, then. I watched that Dogs/Sharks game was week and thought, the Dogs really are rubbish, aren't they? If you can't even beat the Paul Gallen Plus A Few Others XIII without a healthy portion of luck...

As for Parramatta, I wonder if the experiment of playing Hayne at 6 has run out of steam? Despite Burt continuing to go well at full-back, the other half of the equation just doesn't seem to be firing at the moment. I guess I'll have to put Hayne in moto's Just Doesn't Turn In The Performances Often Enough club, along with Inglis, Sutton, etc etc... ;)

Thanks Bomberbears, and in the other game at Homebush, North Queensland and South Sydney are deadlocked at 12 all at half time. The game has been played in driving continual rain, some good tries by both teams tonight despite the weather South Sydney got the jump initially scoring 1 try to nil before North Queensland equalised, and then Souths led 12-6 before North Queensland evened things up again with a late try an entertaining game despite the elements not much of a crowd unfortunately with Sydneysiders preferring to stay indoors instead on a miserable wet evening. and In the AFL Hawthorn lead Carlton

A silly penalty ON THE LAST PLAY by St George, by Jamie Soward (of all people) have gifted Melbourne Storm the lead in a tight defensive tussle between the filthy Mexicans  and St George. The Last play? Why'd you do that?

Who knows what the consequences are for handing the Storm the lead in a crucial game for the defending premiers, who now face the prospect of missing the finals after looking as safe as houses to make the finals a few weeks back with a chasing pack of wolves looking to supplant the team suffering a premiership hangover. Surprising what happens when you become complacent in a game down there at Canberra, granted Canberra in Canberra is St George's bogey ground (regardless of what kind of season the Raiders are having), but the Dragons have also not beaten Melbourne Storm in Melbourne for 12 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

apparently the consequences for handing the storm the lead before half time are, well, a couple of points on the ladder. pretty disappointed that we couldn't really put them away in the second half, but still happy to get the win. should i stay up and watch the delayed telecast, or give this one a miss? almost wish that the cowboys game was on instead! even though they lost, sounds like a much more entertaining game....

They're South of the border (ala USA/Mexico).

Storm game ended 8-6, Melbourne with one of the more dominant 2 point wins, really should've run a couple more tries in. Soward was terrible, he doesnt look at all fit.

Souths came back from 24-12 down with ten to go to win in golden point as well, after losing Inglis to concussion an hour or two pre-game and Merritt in the warm up. When you're running hot you're running hot, I guess.

Does someone want to explain the origin of this Mexican thing to me please?
As Bomber Bears said, south of the border, so we are called Mexicans. Not very clever and not very funny.

24,000 at AAMI Park tonight.

St. George would have won in a canter if they didn't keep throwing the ball out of bounds.

Melbourne looked vulnerable every time St. George passed the thing.

Did someone earlier in the thread say Slater couldn't tackle? He defense was unbelievable tonight.

It goes to show to you that the NRL doesnt have any qualms about scheduling a game of NRL on a Friday night in Rugby League unfriendly territory Melbourne

Whatever happened to the AFL ever scheduling Friday night AFL in Sydney?
Um, they did earlier in the year, and that got an even bigger crowd than tonight's game did. Keeping in mind also that the weather was terrible in Sydney that night, whereas the weather was close to perfect in Melbourne tonight (although it must be said, that there was speculation that it was going to rain).

I have to say though, that I think it's fantastic that the game drew as big a crowd as it did considering it went up against Carlton/Hawthorn (which was a sellout in it's own right). Really pleasing to know that there is a place for Rugby League in Melbourne.

Sigh... sadly I dont know when that was :(

Feel free to tell me though, I can maybe play your explanation over the top of Dwayne Russell's aimless rambling commentary.

HAHA nah Channel 7 did it, so Dwayne was nowhere near it :p

The game was Sydney/Carlton in Round 6 btw. Admittedly it was the first Friday Night game in Sydney since 2003, so I can see where you're coming from.

I think as well, it's easier for the NRL to put Storm on a Friday night when they're top of the ladder, as opposed to Sydney who are as close to the middle of the pack as you can possibly be. Putting it up against Carlton/Hawthorn was brave though, and it paid off.

As the commentary team said on ABC radio sydney, Queensland has the state of Origin and the Broncos are doing well and Melbourne has a dominant NRL team

Both teams meet in the middle - in Sydney

I said he couldnt tackle when he first came into first grade. Was a turnstyle for a few years. I also mentioned he'd improved alot in this area.

I thought the Melbournians call Sydneysiders "Pompous self-absorbed tossers"
depends on what code they follow. that's more applied to the union followers, whereas league supporters are generally "knuckle-dragging bogans" or something similar. although i have to admit that i never heard my melbournian dad refer to my sydneysider mum as either, so who knows......

Gold Coast Titans are fighting hard to avoid the Wooden Spoon by getting the win over Canberra tonight, in the afl brisbane lead collingwood and north melbourne lead fremantle and in the cricket sri lanka is 2 for 43 with sangakkara on 7 and jayawardene on 11, with both openers dilshan and tharanga dismissed early, dilshan caught behind off bollinger for 12 and tharanga played all over a ball by lee for 8

Meanwhile theres no score in Penrith between the Panthers and the Warriors - i sense a little bit of an upset tonight by the Panthers, who are having a dirty ol season, and at the SFS the Roosters 12 Sharks 4, with waerea-hargreaves getting the second try for the roosters after takairangi opened proceeds, pomeroy scoring for the sharks 2 minutes later.
