Hell No! Great line of thinking. It becomes a much better sport when the umps don't micromanage it. So much more beautiful to watch, but each to their own

Glad someone shares my thinking. This is also the reason why I quit watching the NBA...just got sick of the constant over-refereeing of it, and how that now is what dictates play (and teams capitalise on it).

Give me NCAA college ball any day of the week. Lovely free flowing uninterrupted basketball, and when a whistle is called, there's actually a foul!

It's slop. Lawless, ugly slop.
I find it uglier and sloppier when the umps call free kicks at every contest. They still need to call ball ups and HTB, but just the endless high's for a fingernail on the shoulder, 50/50 marking contests that should be let go, fair tackles called push in the backs just because they were a bit hard, and the absurd contact below the knees interpretation. Sometimes there's 3 free kicks that are marginal, but could technically be paid, to either team in a single contest. It doesn't really help anyone to pay just one of those and piss everybody off when they all could be let go.

The more you 'let it go' the more the players keep trying to get away with more holding, pushing and scragging.

Im sick of having players tackling, pushing and holding each other around the ball with nothing getting called, then you randomly get the smallest jumper tug paid a free. Same with HTB and it 'coming loose' in the tackle. If you had prior and you get tackled and dont get a legal kick or handball off, it should be paid.

You would find calling these more would open up the game more, creating more turn overs and fast break type scenarios for teams to score fast. Players would then quickly adjust and stop all the illegal tactics. Congestion in the game creates so much ugly footy.

Agree completely. And given having a handful of umpires to watch over 36 blokes running around an enormous footy field, they often get it wrong. There is a huge element of doubt there, simply given the 360 angle of play, speed of play, distance from the contest etc etc that just doesn't happen in many other sports played with fewer players and on a smaller size area. Hence why I believe that the more calls they make, the more they'll get wrong...so let the game play and only call stuff that's blatantly obvious and with which the umpire can blow the whistle with as minimal doubt as possible. We all see in every game some absolutely ridiculous calls, most likely due to the constraints listed above.

A solution and compromise to both sides of the argument would be for the AFL to not continually revise and introduce new rules every season.

In fact, perhaps a streamlining or simplification of the rules would be more prudent, in an effort to reduce the element of doubt in both umpiring and players themselves.

RUMOURS/SCHMOURS....Up until 10.30 this morning, Dizzy was still preparing himself for the game today. Dunno where the source is of this rumour, but you'd think Gardner would know about his omission first wouldn't you???
Mind you...outside chance it still could be true!!!
It now actually make quite a lot of sense that he could still be playing because Bastinac played half a reserves game. If the club 100% knew he wasn't going to get up Bastinac wouldn't have played at all.

We usually park at Stones Corner, have a few sneaky beers at the Bent Elbow and then bus in from Stones Corner bus station. Very convenient and not the crowds that the German Club usually gets pre-game....

To be fair the person who said Dizzy may be out was at the rsserves game and heard it discussed - he reported it exactly as it happened. Hard to criticize him for that.

Congestion is a cancer that turns people away from the game, but so are endless marginal free kicks. The solution to one cancer is not more of the other cancer. 13 Beast hit the nail on the head

If you can't find any "no limit" signed parking 30 mins before bounce would suggest Wellington Rd and Potts St for paid parking.
The size of the gabba traffic area restriction is pretty ridiculous..

Every time i saw him get the ball yesterday, everything just stopped. He held up play to the point that he just had to kick to a contest. Everyone else appeared to really want to take the game on, but not Frost.

So what you're saying is everyone... froze?

I reckon we can do this, they've just scrapped past 2 very average sides in Carlton and Collingwood, and only just beaten the Eagles at the MCG (where the eagles can never win). They have to be my equal most hated side along with Carlton. There's already been talk about winning a flag this year which is absolutely ridiculous, I'd be surprised if they made the 8. Don't think they've proven anything in the first 3 rounds, this should be very winnable.

The game can be a beautiful thing, and still a physical and skilled spectical to watch playing within the rules. With more confestion and players around the ball comes more obstructed views for umps to try make the right call. With so many bodies around you cant possibly see a throw or a hold.

Making umpires job harder and making rules more varied doesnt help. I like having clear cut rules. High is high, doesnt matter it it is a hip and shoulder to the head or a pinky, it is high. Interpretations need to be thrown out and rules made as black and white as possible to make the umps job easier.

Premiership talk? That's the media. Nothing to do with the club or us fans.
