The changes show how big a loss Hayes is. He was fantastic backup for Marshall and Ryder as we could switch things around so easily. Now if Marshall goes down we are really lacking a second ruck option.

I think it's smart to rest up Marshall, probably a "he'd play if it was a grand final" type scenario. But it shows we have an area of weakness if Paddy or Marshall go down, I don't see Campbell as a long term backup option.

Having said that I'm sure he'll be better than Paul Hunter.

Yeah for sure, but very few teams have 3 decent rucks in their list, let alone 4, and to be fair Campbell is a pretty decent 4th. I think unfortunately losing Hayes is just a hit will have to take to the chin as we hope that neither Marshall nor Ryder go down for extended periods.

Yep and we showed last week we can win without any rucks so we should be ok :)

By all accounts Campbell is a standout in the VFL and can take a contested mark.
Looking at his AFL record he has been in the system a long time (10yrs)and only played over 54 games.
Last year at Nth he played 9 games the most he has played in a season - he could well surprise - remember Hickey never came good until he turned 30.
Well he has the size and weight to make a impact.

Only a couple of years ago very few teams run with 2 ruckmen - (as you know) whoever is the main ruck usaully will ruck for most of the game and a guy will give him a break when needed usually any guy that can make a contest - Battle last week.
Anyway Hayes is a loss because he can fill in to help in the ruck and play as a key forward.
We will find out what Campbell is like anyway but if they are missing Hayes forward presence it might be time for Sharman to get a run.

. But it shows we have an area of weakness if Paddy or Marshall go down,

I think most clubs get pretty thin when they get down to their third ruck.

Take Port. They have Lycett, and then their second ruck is the third gamer Sam Hayes.
Their third option is Visentini, a 19 year old.
After that they just have their forwards.

I don't see Campbell as a long term backup option.

I think Campbell was only ever picked up for a season or two. To give Max Heath time to develop and build up. And Campbell can play, even it not at the Marshall/Ryder level.

Jack Hayes was to provide a follower option, and possibly a longer term player. Though equally he may have been a one year back up.

Sat night TC gets chance to show that he is a worthy back up player.

Totally agree we just really lucked out with Hayes and were in a position where we could comfortably rotate the rucks and still have a great lineup.
