I love Hunter but he is inexperienced and will learn a lot during the video review on Monday.

Lesson 1: if you're KPF is one out and a sure thing to take a mark and kick a goal 10m out, DO NOT jump over a random defender and give away a free.

Lesson 2: if you have fluffed a few chances, gut run and find a way to positively contribute I.e. if you're mate (JJ) has laid 3 offensive tackles in a row inside forward 50, get over and help instead of ball watching.

I absolutely love the kid. He reminds me so much of Stevie J. Both positively and negatively. When he tries something miraculous it's either amazingly good or amazingly bad.

He'll learn a lot from tonight's performance.

I was baffled by the decision of the umpire to reward a deliberate out of bounds against Murphy in the 2nd quarter when one of the Essendon players in the 3rd quarter ran it over the boundary on the wing a good 5 metres, again poor umpiring, which didn't cost us, but nevertheless they were poor.

You think jones works harder than Dickson? Must be a different game than me.
worked*.

and yes in this game he did offensively. He had the same amount of possessions as him in more damaging positions and impacted the scoreboard.

Frustrating to watch but just hoping that these games teach us how important it is to have composure going forward in pressure situations like tonight.

The coaches really need to be more switched on and see that in these games an experienced player like Murphy needs to be put forward to almost educate the mids where and how to kick the ball inside 50 by leading creating and using his class to initiate the win.

Great pick up. Jones had his man cold and Hunter fluffed the play for us

I hope that Cranberry does not accept payment for the game tonight, he had a shocker. Has to play for Footscray next match alongside Talia and Dickson.

Out coached again? Gee, that's becoming familiar. Another winnable game lost. Mike, I agree, we will struggle beat Melbourne. Going backwards.

Only positive I really see at this stage :(
Don't think we were out coached as much as our players not thinking for one damn minute, so many brain fades
surely they all know what to do when they have the ball uncontested outside 50 and there is a loose player back on the goal line

Don't worry, I guarantee we'll hear something like "there are some areas that need improvement and we'll work on those".

Our 20 year plan to make the 8 is on track.

For once I disagree with everything in your post Fronk.

We haven't had a soft draw so far - it gets easier later in the season and most tipsters had us at 1-6 or even 0-7.

As for poor coaching - I think Macca clearly outcoached Bomber as we took the corridor away from them for much of the game - the players let themselves down when the pressure was on and couldn't follow instructions. The message from the coach to the players was televised - we all heard it - and under pressure few of the players executed the plan. That will improve as more of our players get games under their belts and get battle hardened.

Fair run with injuries - last week we had our two best defenders out and we've had our Captain and best player clearly labouring and with an injury interupted pre-season. Minson is carrying a back injury. Grant and Smith would be pretty certain 'ins' for our team but both have had injuries. We've been affected by injury as much as most teams but don't yet have the depth to cover.
Re draw - we've played the group of teams in that 7-15 range and haven't stood up. We haven't sighted the 6 best teams in the comp (hawks, Geelong, freo, Sydney, port, pies) so yep, a cushy draw IMO.

Re injuries, our list is smaller than average. Tonight we had roughy out of out best 20 odd players only. So yep, good run with injuries.

Coaching wasn't great tonight, but it wasn't his worst night. Overall this year our game day stuff has been poor though.

I'm open to being talked around on the mentally soft thing mutt, but wow, we are not improving much, if at all IMO.

Dickson worked hard in the last minute of the game, prior to that he had as much effect as Casper the friendly ghost!

Yea he did. We can't hold it against him because he was trying something but it didn't pay off.

It's just inexperience. He was putting himself before the team by trying to take that hanger. Macca won't be happy with that. I dare say Hunter might pay the price for that and a few other things come selection time next week.

Especially with Honey church waiting in the wings....

How about Goddard's deliberate OOB when he kicked it inside 50 in the last minute or two? Because our players don't protest doesn't make it any less deliberate. Compare that to Murphy picking it up an inch fromthe boundary line and getting pinged.

I can't cop the mentally soft thing. it was a drop in concentration and a slow turn around on instruction to address the third man up problem in the third quarter (which is squarely on the players and the coach was onto it no doubt). It would've been mentally soft if we rolled over but we regained ascendancy around the footy and owned play in the last quarter. Sadly with the way the game was played the damage was done.

Looking forward to getting Clay and Hrovat into those contests when it matters in periods like that 3rd quarter though.

Actually I agree a bit with Fronk, we should have won against Carlton, Adelaide and Essendon, all games were lost on lack of skill, imagination, boldness and confusion and poor team selections. Gia should have played tonight, to drop him to the seconds is a giggle. One or two goals from Gia might have got us over the line. Roughy was a big blow for us, we don't have that depth to cover him, he is a big unit Roughy, and a good player, and we cannot cover him. I know it is easy to criticise Macca, but I said last week that we have a poor coaching team, King-Grant-Smith don't do it for me, I would rather have Hansen and Corey in the box and someone like Laidley, we need some clever coaches.

The harsh truth is that we are a bottom 4 side. Occasionally we will get up and surprise one of the better sides in the comp, apart from the first game against the Eagles we have been competitive, but we lack that little bit that is needed to win games. We will just have to grin and bear it for a little longer.

Crameri isnt a key forward. He is a gun half forward who pushes up and down. Jones will only be good when a #1 defender goes to someone bigger and better.

I agree 100%. Just trying to make a point that we should play them to their strengths rather than have them try take pack marks. Jonesy especially, he's a hard runner and kicks very truly from 50, leading will turn him into a 50+ goal forward.

To the players:

Positive -

stringer. His last 5 or 6 quarters have been excellent. Looked like a genuine afl level footballer tonight.

Picken - superb.

Wood - superb.

Higgins - superb. Looks great behind the footy.

Dal - having a very good season

Negatives
- jones. I'm a believer, but he's testing me
- Dickson. See above
- cooney, Boyd and griff. Just didn't stand up when essendon turned up in the 3rd quarter. Smashed around the footy.
- Crameri sucked but has been very solid this year.

Stringer the interesting player of the night. Looks much more comfy on the forward of centre, looks totally lost in defence, dropped another howler in 3rd quarter when in back line. Is definitely improving but he must be played as an offensive player in front half. We badly need Grant and Roughead, Campbell is the big disappointment if anyone has gone backwards it is big Tom..........shave that beard Tom!
