Will be good for us to have a legitimate tall in the twos.

Seriously though, good problem to have although it’s likely they won’t all be fit at the same time. McStay ends up competing with AJ for the third spot if they are; he can’t compete with Cameron/Cox IMO though
because he’s proved he isn’t up to it/isn’t interested in being the backup ruck.
I’m still convinced McStay would make a better stoic defender and we could use his height down there.
The option is always there. McStay was solid as a defender for a while at Brisbane.

I think our secret power this year is how bloody deep we bat through the midfield. Not talking about centre bounce trios, but the broader group that follows play up and down the field:

DeGoey, N Daicos, Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Michell, Adams, J Daicos, Crisp with Lipinski to come back. other teams may have pointier top-ends, but no one has a deeper spread of legitimate talent IMO.

Coupled with a game plan that maximises this strength and we’re going to be hard to stop.

Something like "it's weird playing Port Adelaide in Melbourne at the G" :poo:

Sounds like someone asked ChatGPT to come up with a line for a banner which would be considered cheeky by Collingwood supporters.

Fly's presser

Pretty convincing win in the end. You seemed to put your foot down in the first half and end the game then and there?

One of Mason Cox's best performances of his career?

What does it mean for what you do ruck wise in the future with Darcy Cameron maybe coming back next week?

Does having more options in the ruck make things even more pleasing especially after the discussion of Brodie Grundy's departure and the impact it would have on your team?

What about De Goey's performance, particularly in the first half?

Back onto Mason Cox, what about the intangibles such as his swagger and energy. What does that bring to the team?

Cox has come from a long way back after waiting a long time for a new contract when you first arrived?

Cox kicking a goal from 50m. That's not something you see too often?

Pre-game, you had Beau McCreery's mum, Julie, speak to the players? What was that like?

Did Jack Ginnivan mean his goal? Did he say it was intentional?

Bobby Hill had a good impact today?

You doubled the Giants for tackles today. Was that pleasing to you?

Ash Johnson as a big man had an equal high 6 tackles today?

Ben Keays and Ryan Clarke tagged Nick Daicos in previous weeks. Were you surprised the Giants didn't implement a tag on him?

Long way to go, but what does it mean to you to be sitting on top of the ladder?

How big will the Carlton game be?

There was some doubt on Darcy Moore earlier in the week, how close was he to missing this match?

Any injury concerns? Ash Johnson was hobbling off earlier in the game.

At the game, watching Bobby Hill, I was thinking how brilliantly Fly had managed him. Down on confidence and form for a couple of weeks, and then to produce this game after being subbed off last week.

Now I know how Fly did it. Told him straight after last week’s game that he’d be playing his 50th this week.

This coach is a genius in the way he handles players and all those around him.

It’s especially delicious when you see some of the struggling clods at other clubs (hello Vossy…)

clinical performance. Something about this team

Clinical, but as you note, something else is going on too. We are playing footy like I’ve never seen before from a Collingwood team. We are chaotic and structured at the same time, loose yet tight. It’s freeform.

Yep even heavily structured brilliance can be picked apart with the correct tactics and personnel but focused chaos is inherently unpredictable power football.

Honestly, don't think he's best 22 atm
I'd have to agree based on his form so far in the games he played. But what he does do is takes a tall defender away from Checkers. He was being triple teamed yesterday! Bags of 5 might be more attainable if McStay acts as a decoy for a tall defender.

I haven’t read through entirely, but I suspect the praise has been lavish across the group so I just want to raise two names that I never suspected I would be comparing, Markov and Maynard.

I’ll start with the “negative” which is that something is NQR about Maynard in 2023. Ball in hand he’s been off all year and yesterday wasn’t a great day for him defensively. He’s in no danger of being dropped and his chase down of O’Halloran was a perfect example of it not being your day, but you can own a moment. Basically I’d love to see a lift out of him over the next month.

That’s the best game I’ve seen from Markov and he outshone Maynard. He’s Madgen poor as an AFL footballer, but that was a rock solid system fit performance from him. If that were to be the standard moving forward I’ll take it.

I enjoyed yesterday’s performance and I think we left a bit out there (WHE, Naicos and Johnson all missed guilt edged chances) which might have crushed GWS blowing it out further, but that will come. I think seeing us play with flow across 4 quarters was the biggest plus for me because it tells me that when it’s on our terms we’re dangerous even without our 3 most important talls, IMO.

It’s strange that teams seem to give McStay more respect than Johnson, but that’s how it’s been working. No idea what we’re going to do when he’s fit again. I can’t see us fitting all of Cameron, Cox, Checkers, McStay and Johnson in the 22.

Good problem, but absolutely, can't fit all the talls in the side when all fit. Add Frampton to that too. Who goes out when you have Cox, Cameron, Frampton, McStay, Howe.

I get what you're saying RE Maynard to a certain extent. Maybe there's a tiny bit of doubt on his shoulder given it was a similar injury and return time frame to Lipinski who re-did his only a few months ago.

That said he has still been launching at tackles and landing on the shoulder so I'm not sure I can give him that out. There's also the factor that we haven't really needed him to do more than he's doing now because Nick Daicos is the distributor of all distributors.

Oh the one thing I was not happy about was that high tackle on bobby hill not paid…..like wtf? Would love to hear umps explanation on that

Sent from my iPad using BigFooty.com
“Due to Collingwood being well ahead in the game it was decided the near decapitation of Ian “Bobby” Hill was deemed a fair attempt to tackle and no free kick was awarded”

Pretty obvious AJ is depth

Anyone thinking McStay won't come in one he's ready don't know why McStay is in the side

It's not a coincidence how well we attacked with him in the side.

I never thought his job was to be our leading goal kicker and I said this pre-season. His job is to be the anchor and bring the ball to ground where possible and bring all the other forwards into the game

At least that's how I read it. With McStay and a resting ruck it gives Checkers (and now AJ) so much more freedom
