The thought of Setanta wearing that horrible black-red thing makes me ill. Hope it doesn't happen.

Setanta and Hille in matching bondage rig?

The thought of Setanta at another club kills me and I think keeping him to maintain tall forward depth is warranted but he isn't the player we want up forward as we challenge for a flag. He's an amazing athlete and can be a freak on his day but if he wants more games, he'll have to leave the Blues.

I disagree.

Closer to the end of the season, Setanta was marking and kicking almost everything at VFL level and against the Saints when he received the call up. It was the first time he really looked like a genuine forward, and a damaging one.

If he plays like that, he will be picked. I guess him saying he wants to look around means that he doesn't think he's capable of consistently holding down the spot.

Many out there are pinning our hopes on Mitchell coming good for us this year.
He will not be the answer next year.
He has just missed basically the whole year this year and the year before played all of 8 games if my research is correct at u/18 level for 15 goals.
It may pay to keep Setanta around for another year as Mitchell gets more games and experience under his belt !

Should we take a shot at Gumbelton, but what happens if Essendon have a great year with Ohailipin? I HATE ESSENDON with a passion.
Absolutely not no Gumbleton required!!!!!!!!!!! Unless Setanta's part of a trade for Goddard I would reject any other offers of useless players or picks & keep him he'll play more in 2012!

i hate them more than "EDDIES BOYS", and do not want the BLUES to help a club that had that CARLTON hater...SHEEDY as coach !!!the prick !!!!!!!

RE: Setanta and Bower.

Both of them are looking for more playing opportunities at other clubs. If there are no suitable opportunities offered to them, then they are perfectly willing to sign new contracts at the club and see how they go over the course of the next 12 months.

After another 12 months, Setanta will be getting close to 30 and might think about heading home permanently to finish off his hurling career or taking up a career in gaelic football.

Bower, may, come good and be over the soft tissue injuries to his quads that has plagued him over the course of the last 2 years and have another year like 2009 and he could step up to being our preferred 3rd tall in defence in which case, T-Bird might start playing permanently forward for us which makes Setanta redundant.

Mind you, Setanta could come out and kick 10 goals against Bitchmond next year and continue on with the same vein and put T-Bird out of a job as a forward.

And I think that Waite is just holding off on signing a new contract to see what happens during trade week so that he can give the club the best chance of signing a big name and then working out a deal with the remainder.

This x1000. No more of this 'Carlton are desperate to get rid of them' crap.

The wanting more game time really doesnt make sense to me with Bower.

I'm not sure how Bower would have more game time opportunities at WCE or Freo if we include his go home factor.

Carlton provide both of these boys with the best chance for more game time.

For Setanta
1) We are a proper KPF short
2) Waite our one KPF is injury prone
3) Henderson set down back for 2012
4) Kruezer and Hampson only trialling out as FF...tbh, Setanta has shown more effect than both

Unless Setanta wants to go for GWS, i'm not sure many clubs would use him any different to us.

For Bower,
1) There is def 1 spot open in the back 6 at the start of next year
2) There is every chance one of Duigan and Laidler might not repeat their form for whatever reason. Look at JR in 2011.

If he wants a spot, there is one there. There are no def spots at the WCE and about the same opp at Freo.

The club should be convincing these guys to stay if game time is their issue. They would be no better off unless we are talking GC/GWSydney.

Recall him taking a couple of key marks against WC too. That said, a fit Waite and Kreuzer probably keep him out of the side.

I think the bolded is the relevant point with Setanta. In the past he has been a player that, when injected into the team and in form, has been very good for 5 or 6 games. After that his history shows that he either succumbs to injury or goes off the boil. Just hasn't shown that he is capable of sustaining form over an extended period of time.

This could be the reason that no one is knocking us over with offers.

I still would like to see him remain at Carlton because his best over those games is pretty good and his application and enthusiasm for the contest can't be questioned.

Many here seem to think that Mitchell is the answer to our FF problem but I'd say it's unlikely that we are going to see the best of him for a few years and it is more likely that he will be used spasmodically until then.

This is where I see the value in Setanta, ie. rotated in and out of the team in blocks to allow Mitchell to grow into the position.

A similar situation exists with Bower and Watson. Would love to see Bower stay to give Watson time to develop and also prove that many of us are right in our assessment of his ability if he can shake the injuries.

Would hate to see either (or both) go for draft picks we're unlikely to use, they're both unlikely to put themselves in the player draft unless they have a cast iron guarantee that someone will draft them. TBH they both may as well go for nothing if it comes to that rather than late round picks in a draft that doesn't look too great.

I realise that holding them still leaves us with the problem of who to delist but think the powers that be within the club would have a reasonable grasp of this. We could always delist and redraft or rookie list the drop offs.

C4 is good for it.

Would be happy with...

Bombers - pick #19, for Bower and Setanta

Use #44 on Roberton?

#pipedream

The reality is we are unlikely to get a favourable outcome from any club, Gumbleton probably although injury prone may not be the worse option, if somehow his body would hold up, gaining a pick 40+ is going to be useless.
Would have preferred trying to deal with West coast for Brown or Stevens, but does appear to be much happening there, may need to beef up deal for Stevens but Mitch Brown would have seemed close to a fair deal for both.
