Very emotional, and I know many will come on and say 'who cares?', but it's proof of how quickly time can fly, and in particular in footy. Feels like yesterday that he was a jack-in-the-box in 1998, as the Dees went up the ladder. Still think of him that way, I suppose. Best wishes to him, Shannon Watt, Jared Crouch, and all other retirees for 2009. What he said is true of all footballers, IMO, at all levels, who know when their time as a player is up. We're lucky to have footy. :thumbsu:

Yeah it was very good but very sad, he was so close to crying the poor thing.

Does anyone know if he's going to try and go to another team or is this it? I'm not sure if he retired or was sacked.

I'm not a big Robertson fan, and obviously am not a Demons supporter, but I found that to be a very moving speech when I first saw it on The Footy Show on Thursday night. A great example of the importance of football in people's lives. It's about so much more than just kicking a ball around on a park.

Thought the speech was great, and did get to the essence of team sport, but the cynical side of me wonders what the motivation was to have the footy show film it?

Did he write the speech himself, or did Ch9 give him a hand? They would have certainly added the music and football footage so why not some or all of the words?

He is of course a 'mate' of the footy show, which maybe explains why he got the Ch9 package when other players didn't. Plus he is spruiking to get a gig next year at a new club.

Robbo isn't your average footy player. He is a very good speaker and always articulates very well exactly what he is thinking. That speech would have been straight off the cuff from Robbo which makes it all the more special. I would say the footy show approached him, but Robbo being his enigmatic self would have loved having the opportunity to perhaps sell himself to other clubs. It also plays well for a future media career.

Robbo plays the game a lot like Fevola does just with a bit less natural talent. The game needs players like him out there.

There was a very good article/interview by Martin Flanagan in the Age the other week about Robertson. He's just about the only journalist that I read in the sports section. He puts the journalistic hacks like Buckley to shame.

It will be interesting to see how Melbourne treat his send off at the end of next week's game. I'm assuming that he'll get chaired off like White and Yze were last year. They too wanted to keep playing at other clubs. Hopefully Melbourne puts up a better effort than they did against the Tigers last year. It is unlikely though being against St Kilda :(
