My problem with the media is that it exists in its own echo chamber.
They come up with a theory, then they quote it, and before you know it that theory is "the truth" despite plenty of evidence that says otherwise.

Then you've got the masses of sheep that consume the media and are incapable of forming their own opinion, which in turn just ruins the game because they become part of the echo
Yep.

And there's an arrogance about it too - especially with MRP, where I often feel there is pressure for the MRP to match what the media have already said should be the outcome.

Oh for the days when they weren't even allowed to replay the incident lest it affect the outcome.

just as bad when you get the coach/team-mate trying to put in the "not-guilty" verdict before the case has been held (or the MRP has announced the outcome of the game review).

oh for the days for a controversial incident where there is a "no comment".

Same in academia, for instance the same guys will reference each other on any particular topic. Take climate change, a will reference b, who will reference c, who will reference a and so it goes on and on.

Hi Rohan, appreciate your interest and interaction with the general BF community.

I would love to hear thoughts on the non-disparagement clauses that are look to be turning AFL accredited media into a mass of apologists.

As a parallel, the current saga re Mitchell Johnson v David Warner and Cricket Australia's treatment of Johnson since is a public example of what I suspect is happening behind closed doors in the AFL environment with some regularity.

Good thread Roco . Fox Footy journo's are all about content and just rehash the same stories though the socials.
Then you have ones like Tim Michell who was a local reporter who was terrible what he did , then he gets a better gig and all of a sudden is a supercoach expert then a BBL fantasy expert

Hi RohanConnolly, I'd be keen to get your take as an insider with the media on AFL clash jumpers. It's fascinating to me when Carlton plays away against Collingwood that a godawful clash is created and yet there doesn't seem to be the slightest interest at league or club level to do anything about it. Or, perhaps more fascinating to me is I have almost never heard poor colour clashes being mentioned by the commentators during the game or the panel programs in the week following.

It's pretty clear that there's some sort of double standard in place where Carlton, Essendon and Richmond never wear their clash against each other, or Collingwood (outside of one-off special jumpers created for Anzac Round or Dreamtime at the G), yet they're more than happy to wear a clash against other clubs with broadly similar colours/designs: Port Adelaide, Melbourne, St Kilda, Adelaide, Fremantle etc.

Do you have a take on why we seldom hear about this in the media? Is it simply that no-one sees it as a big deal? It seems like such an amateurish situation where there's at least one shocking clash every weekend (Hawthorn in the brown and gold stripes, instead of its white retro kit against GWS was pretty terrible too).

Hi MC,

Funny you mention this, as normally I'm not fussed at all by 'clashes' having grown up watching North v Coll etc. on black and white TV! But I thought the GWS v Haw clash was a shocker and tweeted about it. I think the answer, as you suspect, is probably just no one in media (or the AFL apparently) seems to think it's that important.

I suspect that would probably be a different attitude had there ever been a decent policy on the matter, but as you know, it's always been very ad hoc and often inconsistent, so it's almost like when there's another bad clash which might have been avoided, no one is particularly surprised. Sad but true. And I agree, it's amateurish, not like it's a really difficult issue and hard to solve!

Cheers,
Rohan
