I generally just read Bigfooty, but felt compelled to post as we deal with the aftermath.

I think we all feel there is so much to this saga that is yet to come out. As many of the accused remain in the AFL system.. (or will return to the AFL ranks soon enough) , it may not really be in their best interests, the clubs best interests, or the players best interests for hird, essendon and co. them to give a whack to the people who have perpetuated the evil Essendon narrative over the past 200 days.

But that doesnt mean all will be swept under the carpet.

Enter Dr. Bruce Reid .... I wonder who he will whack on his way to clear his name.... I wonder if his seemingly small case will become a way for some of the media and AFL employees to be held to account. The old Doc has no reason to hold back, and would know everything....

See now that annoys the hell out of me. Why didn't we call her out? It couldn't have been any worse for us

Could have been a shitload worse for us if we publicly exposed and embarrassed a real player's mother. I'm glad we didn't call her out.

For all his positives, Sheedy would be a backward step. The club needs to sharpen up & Sheedy is the king of laconic, in terms of his management style.

Yes, exactly what we don't atm.

No hate for Sheeds. Only never ending love for the great man.

But it's time the old badger sits back now and becomes a special comments man on TV and starts devoting some time to his long suffering wife and family.

See now that annoys the hell out of me. Why didn't we call her out? It couldn't have been any worse for us yet we meekly let a hoax caller (or at best a misguided & misinformed family member) undermine the club. The club should have held a press conference & stated that we believe the call was a hoax & request a formal appology from MMM for airing it. At the very very least, even if we were unsure we should have made a very public appeal for the woman to make herself known to the club as she was obviously in need of help. Not doing anything in the whole saga meant we have worn every single baseless rumour the media could dream up.
We didn't call her out because it was a clear and serious message that the situation was dissolving. Once the players families are in rebellion the club is on it's way down and out real quick. The club can sustain almost anything other than players walking out. Right now we are looking pretty for 2014. The alternative could have been the team breaking apart and heading elsewhere. Once that process began we would have accepted anything the AFL threw at us without blinking. People need to understand how close to disaster this club has come.

Really???
That's my understanding, yes.

Around 2005-06, of course, forcing repayment at that point would have forced them into bankruptcy- they were that broke at that point, that it would have literally killed them off. Don't forget, at the time, that they had a rubbish list and were stripped of draft picks, huge debt from the Legends Stand debacle and a massive contract to pay on Denis Pagan.

Then later it was eschewed because of things such as the Princess Park redevelopment, and I suspect, a desire to have Carlton be more competitive again. I've always wondered whether Demetriou's lax approach to chasing up that debt is a tacit concession that he believes the 2002 penalties were excessive.

I'm getting pissed the day Demetriou resigns, hopefully in disgrace. I'll either stop drinking or drink even more if Gillon McLachlan succeeds him. Although I am holding out for the disgrace scenario, as it'll probably have 'Gill's dirty little prints all over it so he will go out with the Fat One.

The ridiculous thing is that given the shoddy stadium deals a lot of clubs are currently getting, Visy Park has been touted as a more viable alternative! Looking back in an attempt to think progressively. Madness.

We requested the ASADA investigation.
We fully co-operated with the ASADA investigation.
We commissioned the Switkowski report to help us improve our internal processes.
A number of staff have already left or been removed, including the staff at the centre of the saga.
ASADA hasn't identified any doping violations.
No specific AFL rules have been broken (no, BTGID does not count).

And the best deal we could negotiate was this one ? And we think it's fair ? o_O

You're right. BTGID is not a rule that has been broken. It has been applied retrospectively to hold us to a standard that simply did not exist. We can rest assured that the reason we will not know anything is because EFC would not be able to justify penalties in light of the actual knowledge.

Look at it this way, if what Hird has done is really serious enough to warrant a suspension for 1 year he should be banned for life. I'm not sure that the sort of gross disregard for player welfare that he is being accused of, which reflects penalty, is something that he should be able to over come. Farvourite son or not, why the **** would we want that guy back at the club.

I wouldn't mind sheeds as the face and doing some pre game hype up as long as bomber does most of the work behind the scenes and he gets to keep out of the spotlight

I don't think he said that - I thought he said he was asked to resign before the Freo game and chose not to.

That's what Bomber said. Hird was advised to resign by his solicitor.

Can you imagine what it would be like to be part of Sheedy's family? If you were in his family, is this what you'd want?

;)

Love the great man too. I'll show myself out.

This is all Matthew Knights fault if he didn't leave our club in shambles Hird and Bomber wouldn't have to try and fix/micro manage every department at the club. Their time was stretched and they weren't able to focus solo on the key football related departments, FFS when will Knights quit screwing Essendon over that flog.

Mark 'Bomber' Thompson turns focus back on sub-standard Essendon Football Club

AUGUST 28, 2013 10:05AM

MARK Thompson says the Bombers were in a state of disarray when he and James Hird started working at the club in late 2010as the fallout from the drugs crisis continues.
Thompson was yesterday fined $30,000 by the AFL for his role in the supplements program that saw the club booted out of the finals and Hird banned for a year, among other sanctions.
The club appointed Hird and Thompson in late 2010 as a coaching “dream team” to restore the club to glory.
Thompson had just resigned as coach of Geelong after a period of sustained success.
Thompson said when he started at Essendon, every area of the club was sub-standard.

How can we offer Hird an extension whislt there is still a possibility of players receiving bans?
Either the club knows we will not be receiving player bans or they are jumping the gun.

I think we need Sheeds but not as coach, as a Director of Football Operations. We need him to help us restore our name in the public's eyes. Yeah huge task but he's the man for it.

Bomber Thompson was responsible for bringing Weapon and subsequently Dank into the club, so i'm not a big rap for hin to take over.

No issues with player infractions - I posted at the beginning of this sags, that Evans spent lots of time in Canberra during February - This had to be to come to an arrangement with ASADA and the AFL. Unless new information comes to hand there will be no player infractions.

The AFL has accepted it must take some responsibility in the Essendon supplements affair, admitting that earlier intervention might have mitigated the damage for the club and competition.

In the fallout from the scandal, failings in the code more broadly, rather than at Essendon solely - have been highlighted by industry and employment law experts.

On Wednesday, AFL deputy chief executive Gillon McLachlan revealed a meeting in August 2011 between Essendon and AFL officials where the dangers of peptides were discussed.

"I don't think that we can shirk it in every instance," McLachlan said about the accountability of the AFL in the matter.
"I'm happy to take that on the chin in the sense that if we had gone out there (to Essendon) every month and monitored it then maybe we wouldn't be in situation, so I'll take that.
"I think in the end what's happened here is incredibly regrettable for the players and for the competition. We have resolution, and if people need to take various forms of accountability, I'll take that."

Veteran player agent Peter Jess, manager of Essendon captain Jobe Watson until this year, told Fairfax Media on Tuesday that the AFL was as culpable as the Bombers for the drug controversy that has marred the season.

Former politician and VFA footballer Phil Cleary is another who believes the crisis could have been averted if the AFL had enforced stricter occupational health and safety standards.

An alleged failure to provide a "safe workplace" for footballers at Essendon could allow players to terminate their contracts with the club, according to some employment law specialists, including Josh Bornstein, deputy chairman of Racing Victoria's appeals board.

The AFL Players Association and the Australian Council of Trade Unions were reported to be in discussions at the weekend.

Jess told Fairfax Media that the August 2011 meeting of AFL and Essendon officials , where both parties acknowledge peptide use was discussed , was evidence the league should have monitored any Essendon sport-science program closely.

"First and foremost, the AFL had intelligence that warned them that things were happening," Jess said. "How did they follow up that meeting?

"I think the AFL is as culpable as the club for not putting in processes to protect the players. They are mandated to ensure there's a safe workplace."

Cleary says football has not had adequate systems in place to protect players from occupational health and safety hazards.

"I don't always want to be blaming people, but let's face it, it's a problem. It is a failing of the organisation without any shadow of a doubt," he said.

"The AFL and the AFLPA, they haven't been tooled up for these matters. He said occupational health and safety experts should be employed at every AFL club.

A frequent critic of the AFL, Jess manages Essendon's Nathan Lovett-Murray. He said Brownlow medallist Watson discussed the Bombers' supplements program with him after it was revealed publicly.

While Essendon players, including Watson, have said they were convinced that the program was entirely above board, Jess says that system must be acknowledged as imperfect.

"The mantra up until now is that the club doctor was the person you could go to," Jess said.

"What we can conclude is that failed, and it will continue to fail because in most cases I think the AFL doctors , whilst their heart is in the right place , they're often compromised.

"The AFL is mandated to ensure that players have a safe workplace, and to have a safe workplace it must have a process of being monitored on a regular basis. If that system had been in place we wouldn't have this outcome.

I hate the foamers on the HTB saying "Essendon aren't done yet,Asada will be banning players. The punishments right now are just AFL based ones wait till Asada come in" Talking like its going to happen.

I hope it doesn't tho.

These idiots also said we would lose ANZAC day, not play for points in 2014, and lose draft picks for three years. They also said Hird would be banned for life.

Bottom line, don't listen to them.

Look at it this way, if what Hird has done is really serious enough to warrant a suspension for 1 year he should be banned for life. The bit in bold is the $64 million question, isn't it ?

The message out of EFC seems to be that Hird knows he did some things wrong, but fell on his sword for the sake of the club / players, with the implication that he took more punishment than the club thinks is actually fair in order that this saga could end now (as if this will actually end the saga !).

No issues with player infractions - I posted at the beginning of this sags, that Evans spent lots of time in Canberra during February - This had to be to come to an arrangement with ASADA and the AFL.
Or it could have been sorting out the mechanics of how the ASADA investigation was going to run ? Order of interviews, who's allowed in interviews rooms, right to silence, etc. ?

I've been reminded at the drug issues at Hawthorn and Collingwood and the ways in which they reflect bag governance and bringing the game into disrepute. To that person that said that some don't deal with disappointment well, I'm not disappointed, I'm ****ing furious.

The difference is that their drug issues are not club sanctioned.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pissed about all of this, but I have found a level of perspective that I am comfortable with.
