Player Watch Sam Berry - Contract Extension to End of 2026

Jeez, I don't know what some people watch sometimes. I'm stoked we've retained him after dicking him around the last two years. I think people might get a surprise next year after another preseason. He's a bull who can work through traffic and can kick goals. Works great both ways. Can take a mark. I guess we will have to wait and see but I like him.

I’m not against it but I’m also not completely sold on Berry either.

He has attributes, but the fumbling costs him dearly, and I don’t know if that’s something he’ll ever fix.

I do feel that if we’re going to get all the things we want done this off season we have to give up something, Berry felt like he might have been an okay option to give up.

The press release said everything you need to know about the Crows under Nicks.

Berry 'demonstrates all the attributes we value highly' according to Reid.
Yep like trying hard and being poorly skilled.

Expect Berry to find his way into the leadership group alongside Keays, ROB and Murphy.

This club is a f@#$ing joke.

I’m happy with him staying
Means we really should be moving Laird on.

We just cannot have a modified containing Crouch, Laird & Berry.

Crouch & Berry is OK as Berry can play forward too.

Crouch n Berry rotate
Berry has good burst speed when he uses it, we just haven't seen him use it enough. He's also very capable of taking hangers which I've seen close up in the NAB League when he was playing for Gippy Power, backed up by his exceptional "hops" testing numbers at the Draft Combine, he actually tested quite well in the 20m speed test and was in the top 10% of the draft for endurance. Athletically he stacks up exceptionally well we just need him to use it more.

Victorian Draft Combine:

2km time trial:
6:10 minutes
Running vertical leap (R/L): 81/94
20m sprint: 3.02 seconds

Is VB capable of getting that out of him?

That was a stinky draft, not much to hang its hat on outside of Thilly and some next Gen and academy picks and even then...

Yep beyond Jake Bowey at pick 21 that draft is pretty shit. Maybe 2 or 3 other freely available players that ended up AFL standard

Yep these workmanlike types eg Ned and Berry are available late in drafts

Hamish had a blind spot for too long
Other than Errol Gulden (would have been matched wherever the bid came) taken after him and perhaps the mature aged Beau McCreery who should our guys have taken instead, given it was the Covid draft and Sam had a very good underage year (2019) playing 3rd banana to Caleb Serong and Sam Flanders in Gippy Power's midfield? Eddie Ford would have been the only one I'd have possibly looked at.

I don’t think Berry is a ‘bust’ as such, he’s still a guy that can probably be the fourth/fifth mid in an average or worse side, which is fine for a pick 28

Problem is, we’re looking to eclipse that level (team-wise) this year, and we need (and have) players to overtake him

Remembering it was a Covid impacted draft especially for the Victorian kids can't say I'd be too enthused about taking anyone else picked after him (Gulden absolutely gets matched at that pick) and Beau McCreery was a speculative mature age pick. Eddie Ford was very mercurial but for some odd reason he went much later than expected, consistency ussues perhaps.

Yeah very poor draft crop, in hindsight. I like Neale, but we wouldn’t have taken both him and RT

He has a lot of the tools, he’s just not clean enough at this point in his career. The issue is I’m not sure that’s something you can develop at this point.

Just need to not fumble which he didn't do a few years ago when he also played in the midfield.

The question is whether this is a mental or ability issue.

If Berry slips in the midfield queue next season, may be best for both parties he looks to another club for opportunities... particularly if Crouch has a strong season.
