Buckenara's top 50;

6. SAM HAYES

Ruckman/key forward, 203cm, 93kg, Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro

Buckenara says: The Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro big man is the best ruck/forward in this year’s crop. He is a clever tap ruckman who can push forward and kick goals, a role he is likely to fulfil early in his AFL career. In time though, Hayes should develop into a ruckman who can push forward but he will need to improve his fitness in order to that that. There is plenty of upside with Sam Hayes.

Plays like: David Hale/Max Gawn

By the way, Hayes is a good ole Port Adelaide name.
Neville “Chicken” Hayes & Ray Hayes. Not much can be said of Ray, a bit of a plodder in the 80’s (I think) who ended his playing career with Westies.
But “Chicken” Hayes is another matter. He finished his career with 8 premierships in that golden era of the 50’s & 60’s.
He was always known as “Chicken” Hayes & never as Neville. Goodness knows why ?
I guess to us oldies there will be only one nickname for Sam. Yep, you guessed it - Chicken.

Because he had a tendency to raise his elbows.

Had him as a teacher. Was a bit of a loose cannon.

There are definitely parts of his game that need to improve but the raw talent is there in spades. Get him fitter and he will be a star. He's going to learn from the best ruckman in the AFL and has all the traits to make it
Which one? Lade or Ryder?

How'd ya pull up this morning? The most raucous I've heard Macca on a podcast!

When’s the podcast up on iTunes?

The live one doesnt go up, too much swearing for the BF one. Go to spreaker

Ray was a very good full back in the 1970s. Typical Fos Williams hard man. Missed the 1972 grand final through suspension and Dennis Sachse kicked 6 goals from full forward.

Followed Fos over to Westies in 1974.

With his height and marking ability he could well be the 50 goal season forward to replace Eddy at the Maglies. I expect Billy to get games in the A grade and be the B grade ruckman first ruck in 2018. Ladhams will be the main back up to Billy so Sam gets to work on his forward craft whilst we have no injuries. We have never had any problems increasing endurance capacity of players since Burgo came back. He has good speed for a ruck so that to me is more important. Its hard to improve speed compared to endurance.

Will have to be patient, probably won’t be AFL ready until he is 24-25. But well worth the pick.

The question may well be, will he be that patient?

I recall one game at the Ponderosa where Ray decked a couple of doggies. There was real anger in the crowd. A relatively young GR was draped in his Port scarfe, hand knitted whilst listening to the ‘72 ashes series on the radio, and wearing Kevin Beswicks #16 on my duffle coat, along with a couple of cheer squad patches. I was bloody scared taking the train home, and i only had to go to Salisbury. Luckily I was in a group of mates from SNFC and the worse they did was give me crap as we walked home from the station.

So all he does is punch numbers on draft night? He has a bigger say in our list management than that.

What do you base that on?? The hope box? How many lists have you looked at and seen how much experience other sides have.

Look at West Coast they have an all Oz ruckman and great athlete in Nick Natanui a Ryder type and have gone for different types of back up in Vardy, Lycett, Giles and and they decide to go with extra back up with rookieing Petrie in 2017. And how did Vardy and Petrie go against Ryder in that final? The WCE have cut Giles and Petrie for 2018 and I dont know who they drafted but I would argue Vardy and Lycett and a no game kid are better and deeper back up than the no gamers of Frampton Ladhams and Hayes. Shit Freo took 2 tonight, thanks to comments by Macca19 tonight, to have 5 on their list.

And sounds like we were going to copy 2014 and 2016 and go in with just 3 rucks which turned out sub optimal with injuries and suspensions, if Hayes didn't slide big time.

So your happy to count 197cm guys like Vardy and Petrie as ruck depth for west coast but don't count westhoff Howard Dixon frampton as ruck depth for port ?

Yes, perhaps a bit harsh by me regarding Ray. There’s a current player on our list who Ray reminds me of - Tommy Jonas. Always played the game, most times, on the right side of that line but if he ever crossed that line the media would shout “thuggery, give him six matches” and lo and behold that’s what would happen at the judiciary! And missing a final through suspension and hurting the club big time, sounds familiar!

Vardy is a ruckman not a tall forward who rucks, so it doesn't matter how tall he is. Paddy is only 196cm. Petrie was brought in as a rookie for insurance as a Nick Nat did his knee late in 2016 and Lycett has regular injury issues.

Why would you want Westhoff, Howard or Dixon rucking week in week out if Paddy gets injured and Frampton has his usual preseason injuries? Pinch hitting with talls long term isnt depth, is putting the finger in the dyke. Sure they are all good to give Paddy a 15~20% of game time chop out but that is about it. I dont want Dixon away from goals or Howard away from playing on the tall forwards for more than a few minutes. And Westhoff is a wingman who plays wing back these days.

I don't want westhoff etc rucking

Name the ruck you would be happy rucking if paddy went down. I would love to hear it...

Frampton has to be given a go. He's been here long enough. But Billy gets injured in the preseason so if Paddy goes down at the start of the year then he might not be around. If its one game with no Paddy or Billy then depending on match ups go with Howard or Ladhams. If its 6 games both are missing stuffed if i know what we do.

I wanted us to pick Scott Jones who is 22, was an AFL-AIS graduate when 17, broke his ankle in his U/18 year, which saw him miss the draft and has slowed his progress down. He plays at East Perth so is aligned with West Coast, was a better ruckman than Giles, but when Giles was dropped from the Eagles to East Perth he was forced to play 2nd fiddle to him, and spent time as a forward but maintained his output. He ran a 3.02 second 20m sprint and 20.2 Yo-Yo test so that is decent running ability, is 202cm/109kgs so at 22 he was a plug and play emergency ruckman in the #4 rucking slot when drafted but he would have quickly gone past Ladhams and maybe even Billy. He has worked in an AFL environment with the WCE feeder club and at 22 has upside and development potential rather than a 29 year old state ruckman break in case of emergency type.

I am happy we got Hayes instead of Jones because he shouldn't have slide that far, and he could be something in 5 years time, so once we got him we were never going to take Jones - who Freo nabbed at pick 70.

But Parker said if Hayes didn't slide we wouldn't have taken a ruck, ie Jones or anyone else, and he probably would have gone for another HBF 180~185cm type, because we need more of them.

AFL draft 2017: Sam Hayes’ rapid rise from ‘uncoordinated foal’ to best ruck prospect

But Sam Hayes — arguably the best ruck prospect of the 2017 draft class at 203cm — has a message for those ruck critics.

“They’re harsh on ruckman, some people,” Hayes tells foxfooty.com.au.

“I think it’s one of the most important positions on the ground. You set up the play and you feed it down to the midfielders, so you’re really important.

“Yes the ruckman that taps the ball then stands there and watches the contest is gone nowadays. But the ruckman that follows up at ground level and gets involved as almost an extra midfielder ... that’s gold for a side. And if they can get forward, that benefits the team and the individual as well.”

The best thing about Hayes is he practices what he preaches.

According to Champion Data, the Eastern Ranges gun was superb in every key area you want from a ruckman during this year’s TAC Cup. His average of 16 disposals ranked elite, along with his contested possessions, uncontested possessions, marks, hit-outs-to-advantage, clearances and score involvements. He also booted 16 goals from his 14 games.
