He achieved a Magpies B&F. He's achieved being AFL's 6th highest average hitouts in a season and 5th highest hitouts to advantage. He's not 1st ruck in the SANFL because Hinkley has his cards marked. You banging on saying otherwise just shows you either have skin in the game are you're really *in stupid. You're so over the top in defence of old cokehead Lycett that I suspect it's the former.
I didn’t think 30 was that old but then again if your only 12 30 is ancient

I honestly believe there is more than just form.
I don’t rate him but with our ruck stocks so short you would think he would have played more games unless
A He’s not that good full stop or
B There’s some reason outside of football ability keeping him out.
You’re taken the Teacher hates me sookie sookie lala approach.
I just don’t see it that way and I want Ken gone as much as anyone.
Anyway whatever it is I still believe Hayes and Ken won’t be on our list next year.

So we have a coach who is a known failure

Who is known to be stubborn with selections

Who is known to be tactically inept

Who is has repeatedly ****ed up our ruck position across the decade he’s been here

Who has backed in lycett despite the fact he’s getting smacked every week and turned in some of the worst performances of any ruck in the league

A coach who has shown he doesn’t understand the ruck position by backing in non-rucks which has cost us and by trying to play 2 rucks which hasn’t worked.

A coach who has proven he doesn’t like players over 6 foot unless they’re better ground level players than Robbie gray

A coach who has backed in smalls like Sam gray Neade and now mcintee for an insane about of games

But you think he’s not picking Hayes could only possibly be because Hayes is shit..

If you worked in forensics with a serial killer covered in blood with a knife in his hand standing in front of you and you would pin the murder on the 8 year old girl down the road because you feel she’s got weird side eye.

Wait is 240v saying lycett is doing fine?

My god. Anyone who thinks lycett hasn’t had the worst beatings an experienced ruck has seen has shit for brains.

Every ruck has had their career best ever game against lycett.

Rucks now are licking their lips. Managers would be advising to negotiate their contracts after they play port.

You delisted Sam Mayes?

Why Hayes didn’t request a trade last season is beyond me. Club for whatever reason clearly will not play him and he deserves a better shot at it.

Port have had a decent track record of not letting the players it wants to keep go, from what I heard he was shopped around but no takers. Now I don't know if that's 100% true but I mean you have to ask the question.

Perhaps under a different coach he might play some more, but by the time happens he will probably be back playing in regional Vic.

I’m saying he’s at the end of the road football career wise.
Never in any post in this discussion have I said Lycett is doing well, keep trying you can’t be wrong all the time 👍
If your going on form for the two games this year Lycett was shocking last week but he had a lot of Mates.
The Brisbane game I didn’t see all of it but going by what was posted here he had a pretty good game.
I agree he’s not the answer but I think we have better options than Hayes at the moment.
We differ in opinion but that’s what this board is all about

Lycett is OK against other similar plodder rucks - he had a good game against Oscar McInerny for example. The exception to this is Darcy, who towels him up regularly.

Where he struggles is against the mobile rucks, like Darcy Cameron, Gawn etc.

The problem we have is Hayes has the same limitation, whereby he isn't mobile enough to keep with the opposition. That is also something that is unlikely to change or improve.

The competition has moved away from slow immobile rucks and so Hayes is essentially in the wrong era. Unless he can really develop his contested marking and goalkicking, he's going to struggle to make it in the AFL.

This brings us to why we're investing time into Teakle, who is mobile and has a good leap. He's still very raw however, and is why Lycett continues to get the nod.

My solution would be to play Lycett against the less mobile rucks who can't hurt us as much around the ground (there are less and less of these guys in the comp these days), and play Finlayson against the more mobile rucks, with Charlie chipping in. The issue here is continuity, but that's hardly a dealbreaker in my eyes. We simply cannot afford to play Lycett and get destroyed around the ground like Cameron did.

Great Post, finally a logical opinion without making a personal assassination on a player or poster.

People always same "the competition has moved away from..."

Until a smart coach uses the talent at his disposal and creates a different winning formula. Then the competition moves back.

Any examples where a "smart coach" has successfully used a tall immobile ruck in recent times? I've seen a few where they compete in the ruck, and then push forward as a marking target - unfortunately Hayes hasn't shown much ability to do that either.

1. Lycett didnt do ok against mcinerny, Oscar beat him easily. And Oscar is one of the lesser rucks in the comp.

2. He’s not struggling against mobile rucks, he’s struggling against all rucks. Tap rucks. Mobile rucks. Good rucks. Average rucks.

3. “The competition has moved away from slow immobile rucks”

This is the greatest myth.

The best three rucks in the league right now are freos darcy, Gawn and Witts.

Not English Marshall and Rhys Stanley.

Clubs turn to mobile rucks when they can’t find a good high end tap ruck who can develop a tank and run.

Darcy Gawn and Witts are basically clones of the best rucks of the past 40 years. Just at port alone as an example they’re not more mobile than primus lade and brogan, just training in a more professional era, but not more agile, athletic or mobile.

4. Why are we investing time into teakle? Because Hinkley doesn’t value the ruck, and he wants to turn it into another midfielder.

Hinkley is wrong, as we’ve all noted about sooooooo many times, he’s tactically a dud coach. He’s got one trick, he’s personable with the players, and that buys faith to a point. But we all know, as has been proven time and time again, he’s just tactically inept.

5. Your solution to our problem is to pump more games into a past it ruck who’s getting beaten by every ruck he comes up against, and sometimes to play a key position forward who gets beaten by every ruck.

Your solution leaves us In a massive hole where we suck in the ruck all year, any team that can exposes this, and coming into 2024 a new coach has no interest in lycett who’s ooc and likely to be let go, Hayes is delisted and we’re left with the worst ruck unit in the afl by some margin… the worst ruck unit we’ve ever fielded in the afl and gotten no games into the future of our ruck.

We might as well set fire to the joint.

The reason Hinkley keeps playing Lycett is PRIDE! He lured Lycett over to Port as the No 1 ruck, paid him well accordingly, and has stubbornly continued to persist with Lycett, rather than admit the whole thing was a failure.

I like the guy, he tries hard, but he is just not a good ruckman. He has the occasional good game, but otherwise he is costing us games IMO. Sadly though, we know ken wont drop him, so we need to get used to Ken doing the same thing over, and over again, expecting a different result!

Ruck failures have stinkleys finger prints written all over it. This club is known for its absolute mediocrity and the continued stubborness of those at the top of this club have succeeded in one thing alone and that is the complete demoralisation of this once successful club.

Ken is like "see Kochie. I signed on Lycett and promised him senior coach, I mean ruck, and so I will keep him as senior coach, I mean ruck, for as long as I promised. I'll probably even give him an extension. See Kochie".
