Coach Sam Mitchell's direction for the club and 2024 news

If anyone wants to have a listen about what the data is saying in regards to whether we have actually gotten worse this year have a listen to this from the 9:15 mark.

I know a few people have already touched on it, but the data is also showing that our results this year have been slightly better despite actually putting out a younger team and dealing with some injuries.

And here.

I listened with interest to what Cornes had to say post Port losing on his TRSF. Not surprisingly, gave them a free ride and excused the state of their list, compared to the Hawks last week who were apparently 'stacked' (with no Day, Lewis, Frost, or Blanck, basically our whole spine). It is interesting the media ride our boys will go through. Last year Cornes was on the panel where Wilson and Co were accusing us of putting the competition in a poor state due to our list decisions, and insinuated the AFL had contacted us because it would make an unbalanced competition.. Now apparently we have a stacked list, and should have beaten Port Adelaide away in our second final, just 1 year later.

None of it makes any sense. They have no accountability and what they said yesterday is forgotten. Cornes was Mitchell's pal all year and turned on him for merely sticking up for his players post match just after a heart breaking loss. But Hawthorn weren't allowed to get offended over a coach berating a losing side during a champions 300, a coach that has prior form but media aren't interested in digging that up, but Port were allowed to get offended about an IG post that wasn't directed at the team. The narrative is we have been 'dishing it out all year'.... how, by celebrating our goals? What they really meant was they took offence to Ginnivan sticking it up them the week about the pub so they are going back at us 10 times harder. The media didn't like to made to look foolish.

They have now got many in the public believing Hodge is a very Hawthorn biased commentator, which is pathetic as he is similar to Dunstall in that he goes too far the other way. Shame on Cornes for turning on a colleague who is far more honorable than he is in terms of football and media, and making it out the Hawthorn ones are to blame, not the Cornes Fox News type gossip that twists reality to suit whatever narrative they are trying to make.

Our guys are going to have to learn to ride the media wave ups and downs as part of Sam's journey. Next year it is already 'they should start premiership favourites' talk. They clearly showed their true colours when we lost after pretending to enjoy our brand this year and then potting us for behaviour and also trying to bring back FreeKickHawthorn. So we are back to being public enemy number 1, which is a pretty good sign that things are on track in terms of our performance.

Sam fully understands what the media is like and will be prepping them to deal with this, and to 'be happy to play the villain role'. The media is making out like we have been a bunch of teenagers making fun of the opposition all year, but we have leaders like Day, Moore, Newcombe, Nash, Hardwick, Impey, that sides like Saints can only wish for, and will be coming in hard again next year.
Sam already doused these flames on Friday, saying that it's not linear, and there's no guarantee we improve our ladder position. Referenced teams that bobble up and down before winning one, in previous years.

Yeah he might say that to the media but internally we r gunning for top 4. Just like this year we were gunning for finals.

If you watch the 2014 grand final there is a lot of things that are familiar with our current game style. that Mitch it looks like is trying to copy, switching the play to the fat side of the ground to, fast moving, handball and kick at all cost don't stop moving, pressure on the man and physical, maybe our finished product will be closer to this then many think.

I refer to it as Clarkos game plan with the Mitchell twist lol

When people talk about a new game plan, do you think that they have figured out a fundamentally different way to play the game? Every new game plan builds on what came before, that's why they're all familiar - but it's also what makes them so different. No club wins by reinventing the wheel, you can really only optimise around the edges.

I reckon all coaches nowadays could take a leaf out of this instructional video... ;)

I loved how the umpires used to bounce the ball too! Bring it back!!!!

Mitchell has immediately shut down any more discussion about the Hinkley-Sicily incident. Played a straight bat when both Cornes and King were trying to bait him the other day so if they keep going down this path with it they will have to make up there own narrative as we will give them nothing. Head down bum up focus is on 2025. It's funny how Chris Scott can boldly say what he likes without scrutiny in a post match media conference saying things like "(Holmes was dominating the game before his injury yeah he was at the time but you be a bit more professional and diplomatic than that) yet Mitch can't defend his team and Ginnivan for the actions of an opposition coach. I have full confidence the club will brush off any negativity around how we do things and it really won't be an issue for us moving forward.

Add in the premium placed on having good kicks coming out of the half back line and you are right it's very similar. A combination of quick, precise ball movement and physical attack on the ball/man is hard to beat.

I always shake my head at how Clarkos game style moved from this to that ultra defensive garbage we saw in his last three years at the club (his current style at Norfolk is pretty Meh as well).

Actually, when you look at this stuff it's remarkable how little has changed in the AFL in comparison to most other things. The fundamentals are the same as they always have been. That's from 1936, have a look at this clip from the NBA in the 50s. Everything from how they dribble the ball, to how they shoot, the lack of a 3 point line. Almost a completely different sport.

Very interesting free throw technique!

And it was mostly white guys in that video, so that’s been a significant change on how the game is played as well.

The haircuts are so right now and the commentator is so calming, great watch.

I'm old enough to know how to kick a drop kick! I can still do it.
The place kick had gone the way of the Dodo by the time I was playing.

Even magic johnson in the 80s dribbled like a robot compared with current players. The rule changes have had a massive inpact! I think professionalism is the bigger issue in afl. The game got faster than umpires could adjudicate.

The important thing for us is to make sure 2024 is 2007 and not 2001. We should have kicked on in 02 and didn't - for a number of reasons. I'm sure Sam's smart enough to make sure that's the case, but the similarities are there.

We lost Croad and Mcpharlin and Hay had his issues. Brought in Hodge and Mitchell but they were just kids. A lot of ppl comparing us to Fremantle who lost quite a few first 18 players to trade last year and over the years.

We are actually gaining some First 18 players starting with Barrass and Battle and who knows who else. Its a good start in getting that depth required to go further in season

I've got a feeling you've got an inkling ;)
