Since the rise of Mcgovern who i am calling a defender i don't see the four of Mckenzie Schofield Brown and Mcgovern being selected in the team at once because it makes the back line look too top heavy. So it probably comes down to Schofield or Brown in the team. My opinion is that Brown is a better defender although he offers no running rebound. What do you all think? Who is better?

I think Brown is better at the moment. He's a better defender and can take bigger opponents. Schofield has good attacking ability off the HB but rarely shows it and has a habit of having the odd brain explosion.

If McGovern plays forward then there is still room for all 4. Depends on team balance and the form of other defenders.

Get around Brown fellas. I'm going to sponsor the shit out of that shit.

Basically Brown is hands down a better defender, he just sucks offensively.

If the question was "who is better at running themselves into trouble or spinning into oncoming tackles?" it would be a different story

Brown.

Better one on one defender. We can't have a backline where you only trust one guy to do a job on a tall forward.

I think Schofield's real competition down back is McGovern, given that Gov seems to be a very good third tall option there.
I like Schoey, but I just can't justify putting him ahead of Brown because of his rebound when he's only getting 10-12 touches a game.
I definitely can't justify it when we'd only have EMac to shut down talls.

Agree gov beats schoey for the third tall back role. The problem for schoey is there's just not enough production or hurt for a player in the rebounding role, nor is he a great intercept mark. L

The key factor is McGovern. I like him at CHF and Darling roaming around a bit, and also filling a few minutes at FF. But it looks like McGovern is more likely to play back more than forward. Brown has the pace to play smaller and can cover tall, so I reckon he's in front of Schofield down back. Schofield might need to develop a bit more versatility.

TBH, I really don't rate Schofield as a defender.
He may be tall but he's piss weak and gets found out in marking duals, also not the best reader of play and drop of the ball.

As discussed, he looks good when he runs but can't find enough of the ball.

It's been discussed in years past but I still think he belongs on a wing.
Give him an extended run (in the WAFL) on the wing, see if he can learn how to find more of the ball.
He's quick, tall and has a long kick...Lets use those traits to advantage.

We have 4 quality tall option down back, one who is just as good forward.

Injuries are always in play and if Kennedy or Darling are out McGovern would play forward.

It's a pretty good position to be in, I do rate Brown slightly ahead of Schofield but not by much.

My reasoning for calling Gov a defender is that up forward we will have Kennedy and Darling with Lycett and Nic Nat rotating. With Gov playing there the forward line will be too bug. Yeah he will spend time at both ends but i like him as third tall. Eventually he will get strong enough to take the really big boys. And without Schofield playing as another tall the Eagles could use another player like Bennell, Duggan, Adamson or Nelson who can rotate through the wings and midfield.

Schofield needs to go another level to stay in the team.

Has it in him. Has all the physical attributes to be a weapon.

Have we ever tried him up as a HF/on the wing. His attacking game could really come to fore.

Why can't we have both?

Brown showed his versatility in playing on the smalls during 2014.

If we wanted Mcgovern down back the only way i think we could play the 4 talls would be if our two back flankers were lightning quick and for all of hurn, waters and others abilities lightning quick and agile isn't at the top of their skillset.

Brown is the better defender, Recently in my view he has become a very reliable key defender and can even hold his own with the occasional match up on a small forward and as such I cant see him losing his place for a while now. Although I can see both players in the team for 2015

not having a go at you in particular but where does this perception keep coming from? what small forward did he hold his own against last year? got close to breaking even against ballantyne perhaps? go back and have a look at rd 19 vs crows when he kept going to ground and couldn't stay within 10m of eddie betts.

it's a myth.

Good point, The only time I can recall is that match up on ballantyne during one of the derbys this year

The back 6 i like are.
FB.. J Mcgovern E Mckenzie M Brown
HB.. B Shephard S Hurn X Ellis.
In this back 6 there are 3 key position players and 3 rebounders all 186 to 188cm tall. Ellis and Shephard can at times rotate in the midfield and wings with guys like Yeo, Wellingham and Bennell. We don't need Schofield because teams don't usually play 4 forwards over 195cm. I am not an expert on the AFL but one thing i think is happening with the modern game is that teams are looking to play as many players as they can from half forward/back who have the ability to play midfield as well.
