Analysis Scott Selwood Debate

Last season people were calling for Gaff and Masten to be traded, and look at them now....
Masten was awful last year (and a couple of games earlier this year) and Gaff was only considered trade bait because we felt we were in full-rebuild mode and figured he was one of the few players we had with any significant currency.

I assume the '....' means you think that because Gaff and Masten improved/rediscovered form, that Selwood will also?

I think Selwood has a bit more to offer than McNuggety.
By degrees. He's a very similar player with a bit more talent, but essentially they are the same.

Scrappers - they aren't half as bullocking as we think they are, they just try negate the contest by throwing themselves at it the footy.

While this has its merits in the forward line, and might appeal to the type of bloke who thinks skills are for ****s, unfortunately it often just negates our ability to get clean, positive movement from the contest.

Plus while he and McNuggety will hit the contest hard and scrap out a loose ball, they don't actually have the core strength or explosive first step to burst through with it and effect a clearance - they just bring the ball to ground.

Loose ball, combined with Selwood's less-than-clean hands, means he more often just kills the ball or gets wrapped up in a tackle, resulting in a stoppage.

I honestly think this is where the shoulder shrug evolved from - as a coping strategy for the fact he isn't clean nor strong enough to get significant separation in stoppages.

That leaves a role as a tagger, but I also don't think his tackling is any better than anyone else in our side - he's certainly no Darling or NN in that regard.

Not sure that he will, but he needs to be given a chance. If BF members were in charge of selection, those two wouldn't be on the list this year.

We know that his best is more than good enough, and given a similar age bracket and games experience to the likes of Gaff and Masto mean that he has every chance of regaining his best form. If his recent form continues for a prolonged period then I agree that we need to move him on. But judging him on a handful of games coming back from a long-term injury is jumping the gun IMO.

I'm personally judging him on his whole career - I've never been a fan of him as anything more than a tagger. I think 2012 was a serious anomaly in terms of him playing as an attacking mid and he doesn't seem to be able to rediscover his form as a defensive mid in 2010-2011.

I don't think he should be delisted tomorrow, and he should be given time to find his touch, but not in the 1s.

I guess there's a few different arguments in this thread - people angry that he's given preferential treatment, people who want him traded, people who think we should be loyal, people who think his role should be tweaked, people who think his role is fine but is just rusty, etc

Check this video.. Shuey, Sheed & Masten (wellingham, cripps, Gaff Yeo.. Lecras and others too) But, this is level you gotta be at and the type of midfielders we should aspire to keep and reward by selection. You can't contribute in this manner .. back of the line son

Brings a tear to the eye how well executed the kicks are, especially from the likes of Sheed and Duggan. Our player development under Simmo seems to be back to top notch.

Needed more 'missa Priddis' sound effects

Speaking to mate in perth who has fox and was watching the port/pies game, said that some guy(dont know his name as ive never seen fox, the bloke does segments on his own also commented on the dog putting his knee into hoffs head) that gives his opinion on stuff going on around the traps reconed scot to geelong will happen.

Healy and co were saying the same thing....Cats targeting an inside mid to take the pressure off Joel. Looking to get Danger & Scooter......straight swap for Cockatoo? Would back Simmo to get more from Cockatoo than Chris Scott.
Ooof

I wonder if we could just get a first round pick for him ? Duggan will be a straight swap into our midfield for Scooter and it will be a big leg up on skills. So no loss with Scooter going, what would be interesting is if there are any other WA boys wanting to come back to West Coast in a 3 way deal to make the trade happen ?

No way we get Cockatoo out of Selwood
