Scully

Melbourne tanked in one game, and I hated it when Chris Connolly came out on the Monday and said that we didn't tank, we only tried to teach our players "adaptability". Dean Bailey didn't say shit because there was obviously no way he could justify sending the team out in completely different positions to what they are trained to play in. It was disgusting to watch.

The worst thing to me about Ablett moving to the Gold Coast was the horrible way in which the GCS pulled it off- by telling the media a year before they signed him that they were going to get him by paying millions, the advertising campaign with Gary Ablett photoshopped in GCS colours... All of it. It was repulsive. It basically said to football fans "forget loyalty, reputation, love of the game, romance, all of that shit... football is money".

If Scully goes I will be devestated. But the fact that he has been best mates with trengove for however long, is in a team full of great young players, his family is in Melbourne and the fact that he is nowhere near as marketable (yet) as other potential targets for GWS makes me think he'll stay. And if not, **** it. Time to start tanking again.

Dees fans shouldn't be too upset. The system they exploited delivered Scully, now the system will take him off them.

Melbourne are still trying to forge a successful culture. It will be harder to leave a culture that is already is set.

took scully with our first pick mate, would have had him either way :thumbsu::thumbsu:

After Swallow rejected them, they decided to change tactic and target players from a club with a weak culture.

it's actually because they aren't that good, but thanks for guessing

Nice one.

Couldnt imagine Scully going anywhere. Dragging it out just adds a few bucks to his next Melbourne contract. Disappointing in itself I think (Trengove and Cunnington committed to an extra year in their first), but I just don't see him playing for GWS.

Simply ignoring the fact that the same system netted you Thomas and Pendlebury.

Hypocrite.

Scully would be mad not to go for the extra money and head to the GWS. Good luck to him if/when he does as it will be a very sensible career move.

Agree. I will be gutted if a top Richmond player leaves for GWS but I know that at the end of the day the player has to look after himself, not the fans.

he will be payed a lot of money regardless of whether he finishes his career at melbourne or gws, people talking about 'looking after his career' probably don't take into account he could have a future outside of football, a lot of footballers study part time, scully may well be one of them

if he earns 6 mil in the next 6 years at gws or 3-4 mil in his next 6 years at melbourne... he is still coming out well ahead of any other 25 year old that i know

gone are the days where footballers proffessional lives span their career in the afl and possibly some coaching

Hope he leaves, Melbourne is a club that WC will have to compete with in a few years and the more hits they take the better. Scully goes and Watts doesnt reach his potential means Melbourne starts looking shaky...

It may help WS but I dont think there going to amount to much anyway, Melbourne is a bigger threat.

no you're right... they just have all the concessions that gc did, have already pre signed some excellent young players and have a larger window to sign uncontracted players then gold coast

should be a force within 5 years

A Melbourne and North Melbourne shitfight.

What a splendid and rare occurrence  When will you learn to leave this crap at the door and stick to the topic?

That dog is really cute, I don't even care about the shitfight anymore.

In all seriousness it is getting old, I think any thread that turns into a spiteful slanging match between North and Demons fans should be merged into giant thread on the Bay to be sorted out there. There's already enough of this stuff between Collingwood and St. Kilda supporters, it turns everyone else away from the thread eventually.

There is only one way Melbourne will keep Scully and that is creating and maintaining an environment in which money cannot buy

That is exactly why Ablett now plays for Gold Coast Suns

Every Club is in the same boat

This is the era of the Midfielder and those clubs that have a potential star Midfielder will be a GWS Target

What North Fan wouldn't want the opportunity to sign young David Swallow when his contract comes up ?

guess what ?

So would everyone else

Its called List Management and its a part of Football

Get used to it

True that, at least Adelaide and Port fans generally stick to the bay.
Sometimes the fights are good reading, but not if it's
Demon fan: lol norf, your youngsters suk
North fan: lol melvin, we beat you so ours are better then yours.

Anyway on topic, I don't know why people aren't saying Scully isn't marketable enough when there is a full season still to go before he stays/leaves, in which time he could explode. Imagine the press, Tom Scully, no.1 draft pick, in just his 2nd year top 10 in brownlow and AA or something along the lines.
Even people with no interest would still sit up and say oh this kid must be something special.

Hope he doesn't leave, I'm willing GWS to get players from my least favourite teams (Collingwood, Carlton, Hawthorn etc the usual suspects) but if he does go, well, that will make Norths (well, everyones) job a little easier when we play them :p

I personally dont think he will go. He is just maximising his opportunity to earn more money, come contract signing. He has been given the honour to wear Ron Barassi's jumper number andhopefully play finals for the coming years. If he does turn his back on us for the money (and thats all it will be) then he will be tarnished with the same brush that Ablett is.

Scully would go down as one of the biggest dogs in the AFL if these rumours are true.

I mean look at Judd. His reputation has taken a massive hit for seemingly chasing the $$$, in spite of the fact he was coming home to family, and had achieved all he could have at West Coast. Gary Ablett Jr can be painted with the same brush.

Scully has no such excuses. If he goes to GWS it would be well and truly, 100% for the money. And he won't win many fans should he accept the offer.

I'm still very hopeful he will stay but the rumours concern me a lot.

What compensation would we receive if he left (assuming he builds on his first season this year)? I'm guessing it would be some rubbish like pick 13.

So if another company offered you close to a million dollars, you'd turn it down because of how a few people would perceive you?

The fact is this whole thing is a business and Scully would be foolish to not, at the very least, consider the offer and explore all options.

I have no doubt he's a strong and loyal character, but in what way would he be a dog for deciding to take the logical option? He's only been in the system a year, it's not as if you've been developing him for half a decade and then he decides to jump ship just before he reaches his prime. To suggest he would be betraying you is blasphemy and clear sign that you're blinded by desire.

He would be betraying you for what? Finishing last on the ladder? Call the police!

It's much easier to judge others. I'd love to see what you would do if you were in the same position.

its just sensible talent management, i would be suprised that at this stage of his career scully would be looking purely for money... if he was 27-29 i could understand him wanting to set himself up.... but not at 19 years of age.

that said i'm sure that scull will be on the agenda of gws, but i doubt that will amount to anything... he is reportedly a really well grounded kid, and while i can understand the temptation of money... is sydney really a place he would want to go to enhance his career?

You would think so but there was a pretty popular rumour going around not long after he signed with the Dees that he wouldn't be there for too long. Makes you wonder why all the talk was about him and not JT. This was before JT signed an extension and Scully didn't. The person that told me is the father of one of the kids Scully played with at Narre.

There was also a popular rumour going around that Scully was going to Carlton under the F/S rule.

Look how that turned out.

I never heard that rumour. Most of the things I say normally come to fruition but not sure about this one because it's the first bit of info I have recieved from him. He knows the family and had a bit to do with Bastinac and Scully but this doesn't mean anything is set in stone.

What I don't understand is why supporters want Free Agency but bag Scully out for when and if he does leave to go to GWS for cash. Does that mean ALL players who leave in the new system will be labelled a traitor etc etc?

I think you'd have to also take in the demographics of Western Sydney. It's a lot lot lot less appealing than the Gold Coast...
I also think it's ridiculous how supporters behave sometimes. Labelling someone a traitor, backstabber, "dog" (I'm looking at you Sylvia Saint) because of something like this is incredibly unjustified. Football is a business. Think of it as a relocation with a big big pay check. Does that make you unloyal to your country if you get relocated to Singapore for a nice million a year? Obviously I'm exaggerating the scenario but the point still stands:

There is no need for personal insults just because a football player wants to better his future.

Don't normally agree with everything you say but on this occasion I do. Every single person on here would change jobs if they recieved a far better offer and are therefore being hypocritical for bagging out a footballer such as Ablett, for doing exactly this.
