Scully's Already Signed with GWS: Eddie

All this speculation can only hurt the club and the quicker it’s resolved the better; the club should bring it to a head and insist that Scully's management start talks or they will take it as a sign he's leaving. If he is going then so be it, we have to accept that, but the last thing we need is to have a cancerous situation develop like it did at Geelong last year. I believe that cost Geelong a place in the Grand Final last year, maybe not a flag but the possibility of one.

If the club put their best offer to Tom and his management rejects it then he can spend the rest of the year at Casey training and playing with them. If we have to put up with this for the rest of the season then you can kiss it goodbye.

If Tom doesn't want to be part of our future then there is no reason why we should continue to invest anymore time in him, if he does he should start to negotiate so we can give him the best deal possible.

Out of interest when was the last big name first year player who left their club for huge money after just one or two seasons?

It very rarely happens

I can think of Frank Marchesani and Phillip Walsh......both well before the days of salary caps and drafts and both turned out to be duds.....

Any others?
Shannon Grant left Sydney after a couple of years, went to NM to play over 300 games, win a Norm Smith, B&F...

Sorry I did mean GCS.

But sorry, I had never once heard about Petterd. So hopefully you aren't going with revisionist history on this one to make yourself feel better about potentially losing Scully.

LOL, what? Bizarre reply

fwiw I've already stated on a different thread that I think he will go so you can cut the pathetic point scoring but to say that it's fact because of what happened with GCS previously is just complete bollocks, you're entire reasoning has been proven wrong.
You'll make much more sense if you simply state...'He's gone'. Believe it's more believable with based on more facts than what you're trying to sell ;)

Heard on Sports Today yesterday that Andrew Demetrious has apparently seen the list of GWS signings and his comment was along the lines he could not believe just how impressive the list was.

Secrecy like this, really annoys me.

I hear a lot of people saying that "you can't blame him if he goes...if you were offered that kind of money you'd go too/be stupid not to go", etc, etc

This is kind of understandable to a point - however I think a more considered view is that he's going to make a *LOT* of money in his career whatever happens.

The big jump is going from being a school-kid/rookie earning very little to being a marquee player earning a lot and (catastrophic injury aside) that's going to happen and will be the real life-changing event financially for him.

Beyond that the difference to his financial security and standard of living from whether he earns say $500-700K/yr at the Demons or $1m plus at GWS is IMHO not that great and, if I was his adviser, I'd be counselling him strongly to put other factors ahead of that (loyalty, team success, leadership opportunities, his personal reputation, etc).

I reckon if he took that view then his individual best interests would be served by staying with the Demons.

Unfortunately - and here's the catch - that's where his interests may not be perfectly aligned with his agent's. The agent (Mr 10%) will just take a slice of the pie whichever way he goes and so is incentivised to maximise his salary and he (the agent) doesn't get the other non-financial benefits that the player gets (loyalty, team success, etc). This is where problems arise I reckon.

I don't think this applies to everyone - for instance I can see why it was in GAJ's best interests to make the move to GC. Achieved everything possible at Geelong, leadership role in new organisation, fresh environment to continue his career, etc.

For Scully I hope he makes the smart choice and stays with the Dees (notwithstanding that how they got him in the first place was 'dubious').

Rumours re Petterd were RIFE last year, a lot on Bigfooty

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-731487.html

as an example saying he was already signed (as well as Lynch from WC)

And this from the Age

That article didn't help your cause.

Gold Coast chairman John Witheriff said at the weekend the club had been frustrated that it could not yet announce players it had signed for next year. Petterd is not believed to be one of those players.

Seriously, I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, but I read the Hun every single day, and never once read about Petterd.

That was an Age article and really is just mentioning him checking otu a GC game.

Not REALLY the same thing.

Its strange for Eddie to make comments like that and doesnt happen very often, so he may know something. If Scully was to leave, Id be devestated. It was obvious Melbourne tanked to get the number 1 pick, they get him and after two years he walks out, that would be a joke. I hope Eddie is wrong on this one.

I have no cause, I have absolutely ZERO idea if Scully is staying or going, like every single poster here

I'm merely saying there WAS talk of Petterd around at the time

Realistically, GWS targeting Scully is an effective tactic, weakening Melbourne for the future, as anyone with half a brain would realize that their on the up and could be challenging around the same time as GWS.

Bit of a shame. Scully was and perhaps still is a huge Tigers fan.

Would be nice if he could make some $$ at GWS and then slip down to where he's always wanted to be.

99% of footy players follow a team as a kid, once they're in the system, it becomes largely irrelevant in most cases

Scully would be committing career suicide. If he does decide to go with GWS, his credibility and character are all but gone. At least Ablett finished some kind of job at Geelong. The Melbourne boys won't forget such a dog act...ever.

Yep, i'm sure he wears his tiger guernsey with the number 3 on the back to training, and goes to sleep with his Richmond pillow case every night.

apparently he waited until the night before his Melbourne debut before taking all his (many) Richmond posters down in his bedroom.

Still loves the Tiges. Witness Kane Johnson - won 2 flags at Adelaide and said that even while there he would get more thrilled by a Tigers win than one with the Crows.

Come on - you get drafted to a "meh" team after living for another your whole life... the candle would still burn

Ablett had done everything. Dees have done nothing for a long time, just turfed their popular captain even though he was playing top footy - maybe Scully has been shown just how much of a business footy is now.

Who could blame him?

In that case, why does every play not shift to the team they supported as a kid?

Melbourne fans got caught up in the romantic notion of Judd returning to melbourne to revive the once great club he supported MADLY as a kid....look how that turned out

The AFL and the clubs really didn't think this through did they? The expansion clubs should've only been given the first 2 picks of each round and then after the PSD they can sign who they like from the delisted players to fill out the list.

I'm with all the people who have said that players less than 4-5 years into the system should be off limits UNLESS the club is happy to trade them.

If he left I'd be spewing as a Melbourne fan and I would petition the AFL to give you the number 1 pick, in front of GWS.
