We've got the same salary cap as everyone else. And as a proportion of the cap that contract would be less than Cameron or Dangerfield received. Seems not too crazy for one of the best young rucks in the game.

Or are you just saying Geelong should've offered massive overs for Hopper like Richmond did? How's that working out for you?
Isn't Cameron on 900 a year? Darcy is good, not sure he or any ruck for that matter is worth $1mill a year though.

No, I'm just saying Cats fans have always been quick to say they don't pay blokes more than their captain. Hopper was very good before he got injured. At least one BOG. Will be a fine addition, thanks for asking.

He's contracted till the end of 2024. He'll have extended his contract at Freo before they even get a chance to offer it.

I highly doubt Geelong are offering him 1m a year if the reports of their cap structure are true. I wouldn't be trusting anything written in the West.

Too young for Geelong .....

Ok, I’m off.

1. Take the story with a truck load of salt. There's almost certainly not been an actual offer with numbers around it and the media always overstates salaries.

2. I think Cameron is on a bit more than that but could be wrong.

3. The salary cap increased almost 9% this year and a few percent in other years. $1m from 2024 is a lower fraction of the cap than $900k from 2021.

4. Geelong doesn't base its payments on the captain. It just sticks to its pay structure. We've missed out on many players who accepted higher offers at other clubs and that's fine. Frawley, Boak, Hopper, etc.

It was all BS? Oh no...

Geelong have come out and flat out refuted it - which I'm very happy about.

Rightly or wrongly, our pay structure is part of our culture, and why we've lost so few players we want to keep over the years. Anytime a story is run that says we're willing to pay something that breaks that arrangement - I know it's BS.

Geelong supposedly have offered 5 years at 5 mill.

We havent yet because he is still under contract for 18 months we cant even make a formal offer yet.

But i have no doubt next year we will offer him something similar to that figure if he hasnt signed.

But my bet is he signs a long term deal with freo soon so its a moot point.

Jacob is a nice player but he is far too injury prone for anyone in their right mind to give a 7 year deal too.

Darcy be a great fit but not at that price.
Already has a suspect knee concern and with a massive frame, too much of a gamble at that kind of money.

Tom De Koning could be a better version of Rhys Stanley and if Collingwood were to win this years flag, it proves you do not necessarily need elite rucks in order to win.

But you winning the flag last year with Rhys Stanley proves you need an elite ruck?

Stanley was very good for us last year and we're desperately missing him this year. The days of Stanley getting absolutely destroyed by the Grundys and Gawns of the world (or getting dropped for a final against them) are over, but he isn't getting any younger.

From a club's perspective, I think trading with rucks is a unique situation. Teams appear to prefer offering opportunity, rather than multi year/multi millions. They want to get in on the ground floor for the next Sean Darcy, not pay top dollar for the real Sean Darcy.

An uninterrupted run as the #1 at a club is a huge carrot to dangle for a player in his early 20s who's being kept in the reserves by an established ruck. When a ruck gets traded, they're generally damaged goods, have fallen out of favour, or been starved of opportunity. In that sense I can see de Koning at Geelong on a reasonable contract and a moderate risk of it being a misfire.

Those days are over but they lasted a while. TDK I would assume wood spend a long time in a similar state

Would fit in well at Carltons midfield trolling aside. Don't think we'd be in the race at all given we wouldn't want to stump up the picks or salary but would be a damn scary midfield with Darcy tapping it to Cripps.
