SEASON 2024

Seville!!
We have
  • 9 cricket teams
  • Junior football
  • Senior football
  • Senior Netball
  • Junior Netball
  • Women’s Football
  • Tennis

All use the same old facilities that are run down.

Powelltown will have 1 cricket team and a multi million dollar facility.

How this got through before Seville is disgusting
Wouldn’t have been cheap to flatten and re-turf the chip.

Lots of people seem to be hoping for us to fall over. Tall poppy syndrome at its finest. You all got shown how to win premierships and the jealousy is there for all to see.

People aren't hoping for it. They're just watching it happen. Losing a club doesn't help anyone but it's just a shame that a well used recipe was followed...

I saw that on FB last night and it got me thinking. Hopefully it doesn't happen but if the club did fold, how does the clearance process work? If a club refuses a clearance does it just mean they can't play for anyone? I guess going into recess is a first step before just folding and the arrangement there is possibly different.

Would they be automatically approved?
Precedent with Thornton-Eildon a few years ago but don’t recall what happened there.

Many years ago at SFL there was an issue with Mt Waverley. Players wanted a mass walkout but club refused because they said they would have to fold if that happened so they refused the clearances. Players then said they would retire instead. As such the club folded because there were no players. Suddenly the players came out of retirement and could play anywhere because the club they played for didn't exist any longer.

I don’t believe I have ever seen a club do this.

They must be expecting a lot of clearances to come through.

That's not on posting the above from a in house players group chat and who ever released it to you should be removed from the group.

1) The first screenshot is from their public page (I can see it and I’m certainly not in any private Powelltown page, group or chat).
2) The second screenshot can’t possibly be from a chat/messenger because it has a comment thread. I’m inclined to believe Fowkes’ comments were on the original post and have since been deleted as it says it has more comments than actually appear.

Bloody hell who's running the show out there.

I think it’s less against the club as a whole, and more against the administration that sold the farm for short term success at what appears to have been at the expense of the existence of the club.
I'm not sure how people expect that Powelltown with it's 200 population would be able to field seniors and reserves without recruiting externally. It's a miracle they've been able to survive as long as they have.

Where has anyone said otherwise?
Historically they have been good at recruiting players who have become good clubmen and hung around eg Wratts.
Then they turfed one of those good clubmen (Iacono) in favour of a coach whose modus operandi is to bring in his mates and/or footballing mercenaries who inevitably leave when he does. Which has been ok for clubs that aren’t in a town of only 200 and can easily recruit (both internally through juniors etc and externally) to fill the guys who leave.

New club lodges clearance request

Old club has seven days to approve or deny

Can be denied if the player has signed a contract, owes the club money or has club property (yes that includes club owned jumpers). You put the reason for denial in so the new club and player knows

Once sorted, a new clearance is then lodged and process starts again

If the clearance isn’t approved or denied by the old club within the seven days, it’s automatically approved.

If a player has a club jumper and wants a clearance then I would just keep denying it until he returns the jumper or pays us for its value. Players often don’t return them after a season, sets of jumpers are thousands of dollars, I’m not giving them away and replacing them.

I think what Powelltown is saying is don’t bother getting your clearance lodged by your new club if you have one of our jumpers because we’re just going to deny it until you return it, so it’s a waste of everybody’s time. Fair enough I think

“The club will fold” or “we don’t have enough players” isn’t a permitted reason to refuse a clearance. You can only refuse them if the player is under a signed contract, has club property or owes the club money.

I’m not a fan of mass walkouts to another club as it just increases the chance that clubs fold. I think they all went to Fair Park from memory.

Personally I would place a cap on the number of players that can go from one club to another in one year (say 5). Stops entire lists being raided. Of course there could be extenuating circumstances that could be appealed but one club just taking 20 players from another isn’t good for anybody.

Buying an entire team is more than recruiting. Especially given the price tag on the players involved.

All is not lost for Powelltown netball with an approach to Broardford to play their top grades for Powelltown. From all I’ve heard the two clubs have a fantastic relationship and this may happen.

I don’t believe a signed contract is a reason for denying a clearance. Unless that’s a new rule - definitely not been the case in past seasons.

3.2.2 Subject to Regulation 3.2.3, a refusal can only occur where a Former Club can substantiate that the player:

(a) is a Declared Player whose current player arrangement requires the player to continue to play for the Club (as substantiated in accordance with Regulation 3.2.4); or

(b) is indebted to the Club; or

(c) is in possession of Club property (e.g. jumper) that needs to be returned; or

(d) wishes to withdraw their Transfer Request provided that the Club may only submit this as a reason for refusal where the player has submitted a player withdrawal of transfer in accordance with Regulation 3.3 below; or

(e) any combination of the circumstances in (a) - (d).

Part (a) Declared player is a contract - they call it a player declaration now. Not sure when the rule came in but has been the case for as long as I can remember - if you’ve signed a contract then you will have your transfer denied.

Of course the old club can still approve the transfer if they’re happy to just waive the contract. Or they might be persuaded to do so by some sort of transfer fee from the new club. Which is definitely against the rules now, but does happen on the quiet.

Nice 👍

Huge parallels between jacana and Powelltown

Mercenaries with no loyalty to the club

outspending what they could afford

But a slight difference as jacana went up a division and took on the challenge I think ambition got the best of them

And they had increased money from the Broadmeadows sporting club to pay the likes of Cloke

Could see the jacana situation coming from a mile away
