Members of the Berwick Springs Football Netball Club have voted in the “overwhelming majority” to move competitions and join the Southern Football Netball League (SFNL) in 2025, leaving Outer East Football Netball (OEFN).

The decision comes in the wake of the looming relegation prospect for the Titans at the end of 2024, which would see them join Division One and travel to towns such as Alexandra, Yea and Yarra Junction.

The Titans sit last in the Outer East’s Premier football division, with the league announcing in April that the bottom three teams in Premier Division football would be relegated.

The Titans’ A Grade netball team, promoted as a result of the football side’s success in 2023, is also last on the Premier Division A Grade ladder.

Berwick Springs Chairman Ashley Allison believed the club would risk an exodus of players leaving if the club decided to stay in OEFN, risking relegation.

“We haven’t had the success we wanted so far, but we recruited a range of players, in excess of 10, to come and play Premier Division footy,” Allison said.

“If we went back and said we were playing in Division One, the reality is we’d lose I would say, 100 per cent of those players.”

He said it was “disappointing” that the club had reached the decision to leave OEFN behind, but said there were a number of attractive factors about the SFNL.

“We think there is a breadth of competitions for us (in SFNL) as a club,” he said.

“Travel is a massive issue for us if we were to be in Division One, but there is a breadth of options, having four divisions in SFNL, and having the ability for netball to spread across 14 divisions of netball.

“We can then position our teams where we think is best suited for them in competition.

“It’s a concern of ours that the netball goes with football as well, because we’ve really struggled with netball in terms of being competitive in Premier Division.

“Not everyone was happy with that decision, but we had to go with the majority rules.”

The application comes on the back of Narre Warren’s application to join the SFNL last month.

Should the application be successful, the Titans would be the third OEFN team in the last 12 months to apply to move to the SFNL, with Hallam returning after one season in the OEFN in 2023.

The move of Berwick Springs isn’t surprising but the article reeks of ‘taking the bat and ball’ and going home because we cannot stay in Premier division.

I personally think they should be in the Southern FNL but again if AFL Victoria did their job at the time, the mess that has resulted with the merging of the two leagues and subsequent exodus to places wouldn’t have occurred and an excellent league in the Yarra Valley Mountain District would not have been ruined as a result.

It should be noted the move of Berwick and Beaconsfield into Eastern has not been a success and many clubs resent the decision to allow them in as they have not improved the league in any way. In fact I understand Berwick are looking for a move to Southern for 2025 as they are really struggling due to many factors that have been mentioned in this forum.

The whole thing has turned into an absolute shambles. I would be confident Pakenham and Officer probably will follow suit at some stage too although I do know both clubs are relatively happy in the league.

Didn't you say narre were happy in the league earlier this year?

I did journeyman and the club has been. The decision to move has not been unanimous as a large section of the club wanted to remain in the league. It has caused some division as occurred at Berwick. Will be interesting to see what fallout results. I also believe there is a similar situation at Berwick Springs as a result of their decision.

Waiting for the next League announcement that no club starting with the letter B can be relegated.

And for what it's worth, the umpires weren't advised of the tribunal hearing.

Find this disturbing if correct. Two players both filmed throwing punches. One was offered 3 weeks the other sent straight to the tribunal. The player offered 3 decided to challenge which was odd seeing the footage it was lucky to be only 3. In this climate for the league to allow both to go un punished is a kick in the face to the remainder of the league.
This coming from the same administration that has sent out somewhere in the vicinity of 50 plus fines for what they call mallees.

Shouldn't matter if the umpires showed up or not. They have every game recorded for a reason. Just watch the damn footage. Cannot believe he is going scott free after that display.

Lost for words in this day and age of protection to the head the league allow this to slip through.

Don’t get me started on the you missed the deadline to lodge an investigation rule. If the footage and evidence is there and a player performs an act worthy of a suspension it shouldn’t matter if the league isn’t notified on time.

He only threw about 6-7 punches I’d assume the club suspended internally

Mt Ev v Wandin always a big game Monbulk v Upwey similar.

One v two
Three v Forth

In Div 1

Match of the day equal bottom in a meaningless game

The allocation of these games is done to give all clubs some exposure. Match of the day is not reserved for top team clashes in Premier Division. You may also want to check the ladder in Premier, you're One v two, Three v Fourth is way off.
