We're in Week 2 of the Season 26 Finals now. After an exciting first week which saw the minor premiers Demons edge the Wonders in a muddy slog, the Furies outlast the Gumbies with a fast-finishing final quarter, Swamprats upset the Bears in a thriller and the Hawks blitz the Warriors there are no more second chances from here on in. With a spot in the preliminary final up for grabs, this is where the cream rises to the top and the pretenders are exposed.
The Gumbies season was a fresh start with a new captain in Fryer Tuck at the helm along with a swag of high profile recruits with Fred Medalist BRAB headlining their off-season. After starting the season in promising fashion with the first 11 rounds yielding an 8-3 record with the Gumbies firmly entrenched in the top 4. A late team sheet submission along the way as well as consecutive losses in Rounds 12 and 13 threatened to derail the season but the Gumbies were able to steady onfield finishing with four wins to round out the home and away season and end up 2nd.
The Swamprats' fortunes mirrored much of last season with a horrendous first half resulting in only 3 wins from the first 10 games. However, a win in a shootout would spark the Rats into action as they go on to win 5 of the next 6 games to once again finish the home and away season in 7th spot as they did in Season 25.
Head To Head
Round 3:
Rich (BB code):
GUM SENIORS Vs SCS SENIORS
GUM 8 1 10 3 14 7 16 12 108
SCS 4 2 7 4 9 6 14 6 90
In the first meeting the Gumbies got out to a fast start slamming on eight opening quarter goals to open up a four goal lead. By the opening minutes of the final quarter, a goal to Jivlain would seal the result and provide the Gumbies with a matchwinning 39 point lead. The Swamprats would claw the margin back with some late goals but they were thoroughly outclassed on this occasion.
Round 14:
Rich (BB code):
SCS SENIORS Vs GUM SENIORS
SCS 1 3 4 4 4 6 11 7 73
GUM 6 1 8 5 11 8 13 10 88
The second game was much like the first with the Gumbies getting out to a fast start while the Swamprats were slow out of the blocks. This time roo2macca was leading the way in a dominant game where he gathered 26 disposals and kicked a goal. By three quarter time, the Rats were 7 goals behind, the margin would be extended to as much as 52 points in the final quarter before a late run of goals cut the margin back to 15. However, for the second time in Season 26, the Gumbies outplayed the Swamprats.
Did you know? The Gumbies hold an 18 to 10 head to head advantage over the Swamprats across the league history?
Players To Watch
NSWCROW kicked 6 goals in the qualifying final against the Furies and was instrumental in the Gumbies third quarter comeback. He kicked 4 out of the 5 third quarter goals to help the Gumbies cut the four goal margin back to a mere 2 points at the final break. An instrumental effort from the forward pocket and will no doubt cause headaches for the Swamprats defense.
philreich has put together a nice season for the Swamprats with little fuss coming second in the league in tackles at the end of the home and away season. However, the rover only had two kicks in the elimination final after being moved to the back pocket. Coming up against a Gumbies midfield that is in form and has the wood over the Swamprats, they'll need philreich at his best to be chance.
Tip
Gumbies have had a good record over the Swamprats and finished second whilst the Rats are seventh. They should outclass them again at home.
