As we approach the biggest clash of the season to date between the star-studded Gold City Royal lineup and the rampaging, ladder-leading, reigning premiers the Sin City Swamprats. I'm going old school in the lead-up as I post content that's exclusively a litany of stats, Qooty and numbers. The type of content that you haven't seen in match threads since PVF was a thing!

Let's start with an overview of each team's seasons in terms of differentials

Initial Takeaways
​

• The Swamprats consistently at least breakeven or gain an advantage in the ruck as they regularly have a positive hitouts differential.​
• In comparison, the Royals often lose the taps but it does not correlate much at all to outcome of the game as GreyCrow is a very mobile ruck and finds ways to contribute around the ground.​
• The Royals are very consistent in applying defensive pressure around the stoppages and causing turnovers as seen by the fact that only once this season have the Royals been out-tackled.​
• Meanwhile, the Swamprats tend to be very prolific in winning the ball on average getting 14 more disposals per game than their opponents.​
• However, when the Royals are in possession, there is a more concerted effort to get the ball forward and gain territory as there has only been two games where the Royals have less inside 50s than the opposition (although one was in the Round 1 win against the Swamprats).​

From these observations: the Royals' game will be centered around applying defensive pressure to disrupt forward entries and make it easier for the #stackedsix to rebound, and taking territory whenever in possession to look to play the game in the forward half. The Swamprats meanwhile will want to grab the initiative in the ruck to get first-use to the mids who will play a high-tempo game and set up quick scoring opportunities. ​

Now that we've got a broad picture of how the these two teams play, let's focus in on the Swamprats and figure out what has made them so dominant in their 9-game winning streak...

Firstly, when we filter out and separate the data from the games they win and the games they lose. We get this set of numbers:​

From this we can see that hitouts, tackles, and inside50s don't have a significant influence over whether or not the Swamprats win the game. The most substantial different between the first two games and the last nine is the performance of the midfield in winning more disposals. It's fairly intuitive that if you get more of the ball you tend to win more games so what's more interesting is the huge discrepancy in marks.

Let's dig a little deeper.



The most dominant 5-match stretch of games in the Swamprats' current streak is from Rounds 4 to 8. In this period the Rats averaged almost 110 points with the lowest score being 96. They convincingly won disposals by a substantial margin, but occasionally they would have less kicks than their opposition while maintaining huge handball differentials and taking more marks. Which indicates that the Rats are at their best when they control the Qootball, link up with chains of handball and generate run-and-carry.

Compare this to the last three weeks when the form of the Rats has been less convincing.



The Swamprats have had less marks on each occasion and in two out of three games had substantially less handballs. The Rats managed to come away with a close win on each occasion but only scored 82, 72 and 71 the last three games. A far cry from averaging 110. It force that if teams can control possession with marks, slow down the pace, shut down the Swamprats' handball chains and force them to kick long. They give themselves a chance to topple the ladder leaders.

For us, there are few stats outside of the obvious possession-related metrics that are key to winning. The only other noticeable difference in wins and losses is that we want a significant advantage in territory and inside 50s which is critical to allowing the #stackedsix to set up. When we take a detailed look into kicks, handballs and marks differential in wins compared to losses...




We see that in the losses the Royals have been beaten in all three categories, but the only statistic that doesn't display mixed results in wins is kicks. As we've only had less kicks than the opposition in 1 out of 8 wins. It suggests that kicking and more direct ball movement is of greater importance to getting the win.

Another factor is the venue. At The Golden Throne, due to the often fine weather conditions the average combined score is 206 points which is signficantly different to how Royals away games go which is only 152 points per game.

AWAY



A faster paced game that often occurs at The Golden Throne, has evidently meant that we underperform at home as fast-paced shootouts where opposition can string together quick handballs do not play into our defensive strengths. Winning the midfield battle, pressuring the ball carrier and slowing down the pace of the game will be critical to winning.

One look at the data will tell you the Gold City Royals are fast starters averaging 30 points in the first quarter and a two-goal lead. And when that double-digit lead manifests, it will usually set up the Royals for the win as on 8 occasions the Royals have had a quarter-time lead of 10 or more and all of them have resulted in wins. The 3 occasions when it didn't occur have seen losses.

The middle quarters tend to see a holding pattern as the opposition often wrestles back into the game. But the final quarter is when the Royals' stifling defence comes to the fore after the opposition have been worn down. In the final quarter, we concede only 15 points on average and have only conceded more than 21 points on one occasion this season.

Now let's take a look at the Swamprats:



Such is the dominance this season that the Swamprats that the worst quarter is the opening one - but even then they breakeven on average. But if there's any stage of the game where the Swamprats show vulnerability it's the start as twice in their winning streak they've ended up 20 points or more down.
